Really good to see the appreciation for Lloyd here on this board. His victory over Curry was sensational, and he was not given enough credit for it because it happened overseas and didn't have UK evening prime time visibility. I remember watching the highlights on World Of Sport the following Saturday. And Lloyd's peak was relatively brief - he burned very brightly but for a short time at world title level. To me, the real issue near the end of his first world title reign and throughtout the second was that he knew he had real problems with his knuckles and seemed to feel that he had to get opponents out of there quickly to compensate for that. But I do wish he and Kirkland Laing had fought (even though, despite being Kirk's biographer and major fan, I have to admit Lloyd would be more likely to have won) - seeing them both compete at their peak against each would have been fabulous.

As an aside, Lloyd's career shows you what you had to do to win a British title in those days - Lloyd had two hard twelve-rounders with Cliff Gilpin, who was a very tidy fighter in his own right. Very strong division back then.

I'd say Lloyd had more talent and achieved more than those 3 . Eubank or Benn was never No1 in the world probably not even top 3 similar with Hatton
I agree, the Ragamuffin Man is never mentioned.
Ya, that's one of the things I'm getting at, talk of the best Brits and you'll see plenty of guys who accomplished no more than he did, yet very rarely him himself

He damaged his legacy a bit by hanging around for too long when he was clearly shot - was never the same fighter after the Starling and Breland losses IMO - but I can't think of anyone on here that has argued in the past against him being a legit Brit ATG.
Aye agree with that, I’d say Honeyghan is pretty widely appreciate as one of the best UK fighters of the last 50 years?

Often we confuse how often someone is spoken about with how highly they are rated. The two often aren’t related, in fact I think it’s in part the fact that LG is widely accepted to be one of England’s best fighters that he is talked about less often than others who split opinion?
I agree completely! What he did that night was so obviously brilliant that it almost doesn't require discussion. Which is a shame, but that's why controversy sells.

I think as well Lloyd was one of the last boxers with Mickey Duff with no links to hearn or f-warren so he doesn't get mentioned on there shows

Made and spent a fortune, declared bankrupt years back, did a bit of promoting but lost on that, no idea about recent times

Honeyghan not in the best of health at the moment.

Also people forget his win over Gianfranco Rosi who had a great career and Lloyd just koed him like it was routine.

Sorry to hear that. You're completely right about the Rosi win though, that really flies under the radar yet it was a great one, especially as it was on away turf in Italy and Rosi went on to win a world title at light middle and beat some decent fighters.

Rosi was given every opportunity to get up in that fight by the ref too, I think he only ended it when he realised he could have counted to 100 and Rosi still wouldn't have got up.

I remember him complaining about lies in the press. It was once reported that after a fight he was relaxing in the jacuzzi, drinking champagne, his broken hand in the ice bucket with 4 women.
Lloyd bitterly complained there were at least 6 women with him in the Jacuzzi!

The one high point of Adrian Dodson’s career was beating Honeyghan in 3 rounds. Presumably if he’d made it too the later rounds Dobson might have caved. Were there bigger fights planned for Honeyghan after Dodson?

Wasn't Lloyd utterly ruined by the time of the Dodson bout though?

He'd had a few, I suppose, southern area level type domestic fights and looked okay gong into the Dodson fight. It's odd Dodson turned out to be such a damp squib. Okay Winky Wright exposed him but he was effectively ruined by Mpush Makambi.

Back in 2011 I was fortunate to be invited to the Boxing Writers Dinner at the Savoy in early December

Ricky Hatton, the guest speaker started by saying ' Hey, I said to my mate as we come through reception, bloody hell they lash out on the decorations here don't they, look at the bloody Christmas Tree over there...'.......

.........his mate replied.........'that's not a Christmas tree it's Lloyd Honeyghan'

*always known for his flamboyant dress, Lloyd appreciated the joke as did the punters who roared with laughter.

Lloyd was boxing at a slightly higher level than that - previous fight was a defence of his Commonwealth light-middle title against Kevin Adamson, and had won the title from Mickey Hughes (having claimed he deliberately boxed badly in his warm-up fights so that Hughes would give him a shot). But agree that Lloyd was well past his peak by that point. I was at the Dodson fight (was on the undercard of Benn-McClellan) and recall that Lloyd boxed in trainers that night, for some reason, unless my memory is letting me down.
