I am getting a bit concerned about Wilder's mental state.

I would have hoped that the delay caused by covid-19 could have given him time to get his head together and give him a better chance in the rematch.

However, the more I see or hear from him, the less confident I am that he can learn from the loss.

I read a quote the other day where he says he doesn't see Fury as a champion, which is nonsense.

He also seems to be repeating little mantras all the time, almost like he is trying to convince himself of something.

As a boxer if you face the truth it could well destroy your confidence.
And confidence is crucial in this sport. Without that confidence you are beaten before you get in the ring.
Better to convince yourself that you are the best etc with excuses whether they are genuine or not.
In the end if you believe them they are true.

I did actually post that unironically  but, yeah. Deontay's shook cus, still.
You joke but I meet people that speak like that all the time. 'Wasteman' is just what I think when I hear Wilder flapping his gums. Be around people who talk like that all day and you will come home and you'll be half talking like you're on road. When I was teaching I had a bunch of very nice middle class white students and when they would start trying to talk like that I used to absolutely rip the piss out of them. I'd tell them: go up London and speak like that and see what happens.

Most youngsters think they have to talk a bit like this, down South at least. It's just the same as the dreaded 'Estuary English' (my actual accent considering I grew up on the Thames Estuary) infecting all regional accents in the 90's. Maybe it's age, but I agree it's a particularly grating dialect. Not as bad as Scouse, but it's up there.

JD Sports and North Face is their uniform. I'd be surprised if you didn't meet a roadman in JD Sports.

Like I used to say to my students, go up London, say Farfield or Broadwater Farm or somewhere like that and try that: you'll fit right in. They'll love you.

I'm not really. He was never been articulate and didn't even know the meanings of half the words he used even when he was winning. He's a millionaire who took great pleasure in destroying the egos of other men and even talked repeatedly about killing them.

Eventually he'll look around and say, I have all this money and these houses and my dream girl and my children and I can't get past this? Come on man, who am I?"

He's not broke or dying or suffering from pugilistic dementia: he lost a boxing match. Get over it.

Yeah but before it all seemed forced, like he was putting on an act.

Now it seems like he is trying to convince himself as much as anything else.

That's the worrying part for me, like he started to believe his own hype and now needs convincing again.

Having millions in the bank and achieving your dream doesn't make you immune from mental breakdowns.

Most of his big talk before was very forced. But now he is talking nonsense while being circumspect, that's not what we are used to seeing.

He’s a racist bully. Really don’t like him and think he’s been mega lucky to get to where he has. Nothing but a big punch.

Ffs Tommy.

You missed a couple things other than the tremendous punch. Severe discipline and stamina.

They are trying to keep it quiet, but apparently he came out the shower and accidently sat down on a big rubber willy. It made his eyes spin a bit and weakened his legs.

Of course it doesn't. History is littered with poor folks whose success and millions didn't stop them from feeling empty and unhappy, and devastating losses have affected some boxers apparently forever: Ricky Hatton being a good case in point. He's never really come back from Pacquiao, has he?

I suppose I'm saying Wilder had grown into a bit of a deluded monster, and a bit of soul searching might actually be good for him. Most of us have had to come to terms with never attaining our dreams exactly how we'd have liked. So I'm not saying you're wrong or anything. More that I'm not that bothered. For the moment I'm quite happy to see his massive ego take a gigantic kicking. I'm not wishing a full blown sectioning or anything

I've done a lot of work with gangs in London over the past few years and yeah, North Face (a brand I associate with middle class hikers early into retirement)was the brand they really seemed into. If I saw a couple of teenagers wearing top to bottom black North Face on the last overground back to Homerton, I'd change the f*cking carriage

If you think about it, it makes sense. You don't stand out, you're all in black so you can blend into the shadows, everybody that way inclined wears it so it's good at stopping you from standing out and it's warm and for outdoors, and these guys live outdoors. With their hoods up.

Oh yeah and man bags are practically compulsory to look hard for Southern English youths, man.

Honestly this new subculture of English teenagers really are a total bunch of pudenda.

I feel like I should clarify that the lads I'm taking about aren't chavs. Chavs originated in the white council estates of Kent in the 90's. They wore caps and heavy gold chains and wore sovereign rings and Reebok Classics. They listened to drum and bass, took ecstasy, and borrowed a lot of lingo from the huge Traveller population, especially on estates where the travellers were the hardest families. 'Chav' is Romany for child, after all. They were almost psychotically violent but would mainly kick the shit out of you and the chav weapon of choice was a hammer down the front of the tracksuit bottoms (at one point the fashion being to tuck these into socks). Some of them, seeing as that's my generation, are in prison for murder, some of them OD'd on smack, and some of them are painters and decorators.

The Roadman, a multi-cultural phenomenon, is far, far more dangerous than 'the chav'. Roadmen will literally be 10 stone soaking wet and happily run you through with a zombie knife without a care in the world until they get caught for it. People can take the piss out of them but they're dangerous little c*nts. I'd have a night spent in a pub full of chavs full of Stella and pills over an unexpected 5 minute chat with a little group of badmen while I was walking the dog. They will kill you and laugh. They're evil.
