I've heard a lot say it was the way it was. I know I enjoyed it.
I can see why a lot wouldn't like it. It basically presents it as if every Wrestler, no matter how successful ultimately winds up a bum scraping through by the skin of his teeth.
A lot of the character's traits seem to be based on the real life of guys like Jake "The Snake" Roberts.
Though it is really sad how many of those guys do indeed wind up broke at the end of it all. Especially in the older days when they're not paid the way they often are now.

Even guys who made a mountain of money end up having problems. Billy Graham was a huge earner and now he's asking for financial help to pay for medical expenses. I didn't get the sense that the movie alluded to every wrestler, just the many that end up broken financially and personally.

Interesting and fun thread, thanks.
Can't remember what I had for dinner yesterday but some of these old timer's film appearances ring clear as a bell to me:
Willie Pep in Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962) - he played a patron in the boxing/wrestling bar hangout where boxers and wrestlers were taking to each other (and some to themselves).
Jake LaMotta in The Hustler (1961) - he played the bartender in bus depot bar.
Sugar Ray Robinson in the Towering Inferno (mid 1970s?) - he played the security guard.
Lee Oma in On the Waterfront (early 1950s?) - he played a bartender.
Cheers old boy. Are you sure SRR was in The Towering Inferno? I've seen it several times and never remembered him being in it, O.J. Simpson was the main security guard.

Evander Holyfield's cut out in Friends
He's not cut out of an episode of Fresh Prince of Bel Air though.
I think he meant an episode of Friends featured a cardboard cutout of Holyfield. If I remember correctly Buster Douglas had a cameo in the Cosby Show, Who's the Boss once featured Tommy Hearns and Ray Leonard was in Married with Children.

I just realiased Gil didn't understand what I meant.

Dennis Andries did a celebrity version of Gladiators too.

Thanks for the correction ! In the Towering Inferno I remember a scene where the security guard was poking around in a dark utility room with a flashlight - was sure it was SRR but OJ it is. I remember SRR from Rowan and Martins Laugh In (early comedy show on the 1970s).

Nigel Travis has been in quite a few things. Peaky Blinders being one.

Tommy Hearns is on an episode of Martin too. Knocks Martin Lawrence through a wall or something as I recall

Yep, I thought you meant they'd filmed a scene with him, and deleted it.
