Antonio Tarver did the same thing against Eric Harding in there rematch...Tarver was looping over massive left hooks which were bouncing off Harding's head time after time. Tarver looked around at veteran ref Bill Page beckoned for him to stop it and he refused, a few shots later Page dived in and Tarver was shouting "Did you want me to kill him?!" angrily at Page. I think it was a bit of a macho thing by the ref "He's not telling me what to do", it was obvious though that Harding was taking a beating.
