The problem with boxing is it is far more of a business than it is a sport.

Even if he fought for free, if he was confident of winning, he would get huge bucks for the rematch.

He would be crazy to turn it down, like Whyte was

I'll say it again , then thats it for me on the subject For BJS it does'nt seem to be about the money , its about a even chance of winning , he has enough money to last him his lifetime , with the lifestyle he lives , he's already set for life ,, But he's not stupid he knows it wil be the biggest fight of his life , he already had the fight and purse agreed , but the corona changed that , and this time round he had NOTHING agreed ,, but with the lock down there was no gyms , , you simply cannot go into the biggest fight of your life , with no proper training for 12 weeks or so , just doing a bit yourself in your backyard , then be given 10 weeks to prepare , of which 3-4 weeks are tied up with promotional duties ,,, and Billys not stupid , he knows while Canelo is doing interviews in Vegas at his gym ,, Billy will be the one flying to New yORK , ALASKA AND TIM BUK TOO doing all the promotions anywhere and everywhere to upset the little training regime he can do ... Its terrible preperation for the biggest fight of your life .

Granted if your not rich , still need that massive payday to set you up its stupid and bad buisness not to take whats on offer ,, BUT if your already set financially , money is'nt the object , and already a world champ with other million dollar fights on the cards ,( Smith , Eubank ) then its bad buisness to go into the biggest fight of your life under prepared , , Imagine , if Billy goes in to the fight in the best shape of his life , and wins ,, he is then HUGE ,

I can totally understand Billys logic here and agree , but like i say its all about money he already has what he considers enough.

Some may allude to the fact that Billy does'snt really fancy it , this could also be true , but if thats the case Canelo , by dragging out the negotiations , dropping Billys money has opposed to his own 33 million , only giving him time for what realisticly is an 8 week camp after a 3 month no gyms open period , It would make a good case to say Canelo does'nt really fancy it and gave Billy a good way out ,,,

Even now Cheatelo , is still playing games , he still has'nt announced who he wants , and made offers , he's looking for someone who will jump in unprepared , stuff him , and good on Billy for pulling himself out of the equation

You make some great points but with Alvarez he is the cash cow and has complete control.

You will never get a 12 week training camp against him, if you ever want to fight him it will be on his terms.

If BJS genuinely wants the fight he needs to bet on himself and keep himself fighting fit.

Whilst Masvidal deserves credit for stepping up he simply wasn’t in condition to fight a dominant champion and it was quite a dull one-sided fight.

Lack of notice & preparation as well as drastic weight cuts are very rarely conducive to a truly fair spectacle as Saturday night’s main event illustrated and as we’ve seen before with the likes of McGregor-Mendes. Outcomes like Rockhold-Bisping2 are rare in comparison.

As we all know UFC fighters really don’t have the leverage that boxers have. Sometimes self-preservation isn’t such a bad thing, particularly given that it is fighters who are the ones who have to compete. Easy for fans to be brave and encourage a fighter to take a fight when they are physically disadvantaged. Peak performance in combat sports is vital.

Its a very fair point. 6 days notice, by anyones standard, is simply far too short, on the flip side, 10 weeks notice should be ample preperation time for an elite level fighter.

UFC fighters dont have enough leverage, again on the flip side, boxers have way too much leverage, and this impacts all to negatively on the sport.

10 weeks and several Mil, for a shot at all the glory? Its hardly slave terms. Nothings ever ideal in boxing. Saunders is not going to change the game. He talked the talk, now he should take the walk.

Yep , I did watch it and to be honest was quite underwhelmed by it ,, But he did step up on short notice , lost 20 pounds in 6 days , and went the distance ,, I think this will give him leeway to demand a return at good money ,, where he will state , on 6 days notice all he could do was hold me , i'll kill him with a full prep , , then again it could work the other way , where they will sazy that the fight stank and no one will pay for a rematch

It's the far-too-frequent issue of top level boxers having down-time between camps and then wasting so much prep time losing weight rather than sharpening skills.
I think the reference to the time duration of the fight is a red herring though - we all know it's about intensity. Look how Usain Bolt has to prepare to do 10 seconds of running

Recently Whyte wanted 4.5 months to train for an AJ rematch, stuff like that is just absurd, maybe these hws just get too out of shape and/or to reliant on peds

I’m not sure anyone is disputing that Masvidal isnt a good fighter. He demonstrated excellent and gruelling takedown defence whilst physically depleted against a monstrous wrestler.

But the truth is the fight was dull and one-sided and essentially setup to fail.

The point is that Masvidal, like almost all challengers when fighting a dominant champion need to come into the fight with a full camp behind them and in peak condition to have a chance of winning. Masvidal wasnt in peak condition and as an explosive fighter he really needed a full gas tank particularly when he was going to be grappled so relentlessly. Masvidal’s offensive performance was severely lacking because he wasn’t fully fight fit and it showed.

The fight wasn’t really competitive and failed to deliver. I don’t criticise Masvidal in anyway and respect his toughness and how game he is. His reputation hasn’t suffered as a result of the Usman fight in fact I think it may have won him some fans. I’m not sure anyone is disputing that Masvidal isnt a good fighter. He demonstrated excellent and gruelling takedown defence whilst physically depleted against a monstrous wrestler.

But the truth is the fight was dull and one-sided and essentially setup to fail.

The point is that Masvidal, like almost all challengers when fighting a dominant champion need to come into the fight with a full camp behind them and in peak condition to have a chance of winning. Masvidal wasnt in peak condition and as an explosive fighter he really needed a full gas tank particularly when he was going to be grappled so relentlessly. Masvidal’s offensive performance was severely lacking because he wasn’t fully fight fit and it showed.

The fight wasn’t really competitive and failed to deliver. I don’t criticise Masvidal in anyway and respect his toughness and how game he is. His reputation hasn’t suffered as a result of the Usman fight in fact I think it may have won him some fans. I really hope he gets a proper shot. He's probably my favourite UFC fighter right now, ever since he shut till the fook up.

Nothing at all James , in fact once you get inb condition it does'nt take much to keep there ,, But were not talking about being in shape , and jumping in for a easy fight or 6 hard rnds of sparring , were talking about the biggest fight of your life , which you want to be in PEAK condition ,

Now Peaking is different than keeping in shape , an athlete will only peak a few times a year , and too whats called peak , it will require a good knoladgeable coach to manage it , , it will require being in good knick , increasing the training intensity and tapering off at the right time ,,, , for example you will find the best ameteur coaches , will let there boys train all year , jumping in competition every other week if they can , but then intensify the training and get there lads peaking at competition / selection time ,, you can't do it all year rnd , thats why its called peaking ,, and for the biggest fight of your life , 10 weeks , with 3-4 of that atribituted to flying around a country on publicity excursions , after a 12 week keep out of the gym period ,, its gonna be virtually impossible to peak at fight time .

Theres a reason Cheatelo only fights a couple times a year , its too ensure he fights and peaks at the right time ,,being the A side against C sides can assure you keep doing it ,, but BJS is determinned he's not just gonna be another c side opponent , who knows its just a payday ,,, he wants to make sure he has the best camp and comes in peaking Bit of uesless information ,, when training lads , i used to watch for signs of peaking , which more often than not , starting to develop a sniffle
