Larry Holmes laughs off suggestions Anthony Joshua would’ve beaten him
Re: Larry Holmes laughs off suggestions Anthony Joshua would’ve beaten him
Larry jabs his head off. The Robotic AJ would eat those jabs all night long!
Re: Larry Holmes laughs off suggestions Anthony Joshua would’ve beaten him
You think I'm not aware of that? I was just pointing out the dishonest rhetoric used by EO.
Holmes beat Ali. Nothing remotely close to that on AJ's resume therefore Holmes would crush. So easy.

More interesting how AJ would do vs Holmes opponents like Spinks, Renaldo Snipes, Williams, Whiteboi Ger, etc

Re: Larry Holmes laughs off suggestions Anthony Joshua would’ve beaten him
Joshua doesnt move his head much. Someone with a good jab is a nightmare for him stylistically
Holmes gives up height but only an inch in reach to joshua.
Holmes was down but joshua has been down too. No glaring advantage either way for chin
Stamina is holmes no question
Ring experience larry holmes fought in 26 world title fights. Joshua hasnt fought 26 times yet. To date joshua 103 rounds total. Holmes 579
Unless joshua knocks him out early, which only mike tyson did against a non prime holmes, joshua isnt beating Larry holmes. He isnt good enough

Im a big believer that you get better at something by actually doing it... which is why fighters from prior years are probably better than fighters now
There are hw size advantages but in holmes case he was not a small man like dempsey so i think size differences arent enough to overcome skill

True, not to mention Josh already lost to a little fat guy. I think Dempsey would stop aj.

Larry would win, but AJ would have his moments for sure, as many Lar opponents did

Larry Holmes: Current Heavyweights "Couldn't Stand A Chance" In My Era
“They couldn’t stand a chance when I was fighting. When I was fighting … [it’s] no contest,” Holmes told YouTube channel Pro Boxing Fans. “We’d beat these guys up. They don’t have the abilities that we have, but they would’ve given us a pretty good fight. But, when you got guys like Kenny Norton, Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali, Ron Lyle, Larry Holmes, we got a lot of good fighters out there when I was fighting.”
“Yeah, well you want to learn how to fight, you got to start with the best. So I asked Ali to give me a job as his sparring partner, and he said to me, ‘Can you take it?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I can take it,’' said Holmes. “So he gave me a job to test me out for a couple of weeks, and then I was okay for him … and that was it, and then next thing you know, I had a job and same thing with Joe Frazier. The word was out that I was a good boxer, and I worked with Ali and then Joe Frazier.
“My intention was not to be a good sparring partner. My intention was to make some money, and box with the best fighters, and learn from them as I can. And that’s what I did.
“It felt good boxing Ali because I knew what he could do. I knew because I sparred with him, I knew what he could do. His jab was like my jab, his jab was fast, my jab was a little bit faster … But I just learned everything I can learn from Muhammad Ali, I stayed at his camp. I ate there, he took care of me and that was okay.”

I just dont see Holmes beating either of them. His style.is not.made against fighters with vastley bigger range and size. Yes skill is more important than size but being 50lbs bigger is like Floyd Mayweather fighting Usyk. Also people nostalgia greatly underestimates the fighters of today.

Was Larry Holmes a boring fighter?
Re: Larry Holmes laughs off suggestions Anthony Joshua would’ve beaten him
Got nothin to do with nostalgia..just overall skills.. Mayweather vs usyk? No. These are Heavyweights bubs. Same division..that's a stupid comparison..sorry but I don't think these big boys today really truly know how to fight.. certainly not at the level of a Holmes that's for damn sure.Winter king wrote: ↑16 Jul 2020, 09:14I just dont see Holmes beating either of them. Re: Larry Holmes laughs off suggestions Anthony Joshua would’ve beaten him
Larry Holmes had a fantastic record but he also had the bad luck to follow Ali and precede Mike Tyson.
A lifetime of feeling under-appreciated followed. Beating Ali didn't help his cause much either, well it wouldn't would it?
Thankfully the passing of time can tend to bring a better perspective in some cases.
Just how good Holmes was is still up for debate but we should not forget all those defences and getting to 48-0.
It could easily have been 50-0.

Hell no. Some of his title fights were crazy mismatches, nobody was excited about Frank or ledoux, but he handled them. Rodriguez was probably the worst fight. He was well above average for fight entertainment.

Holmes is like lewis where he had some clunkers but for the most part was entertaining. Ali had a lot of boring fights more than lewis or holmes

Re: Larry Holmes laughs off suggestions Anthony Joshua would’ve beaten him
Joshua would probably have done OK for a few rounds, until Larry found his range.
Holmes was so much more mobile than Joshua who has very little lateral movement, and isn't good at changing direction.
Larry was a two handed puncher, both his left and right cross and left hook were very solid shots, and he punched in bunches too.

I'd say so. Anthony Joshua's success has been largely down to his moderate boxing ability and tremendous power. He had begun increasing his size and power but that backfired spectacularly.
As a pure boxer he's still learning. His next fight will tell us just how much he's learnt.
Larry Holmes had the better stamina, chin and recovery powers.
Holmes also had by far the better boxing education. Just imagine an Anthony Joshua after years of training with the more orthodox 1970s version of Ali, (the 60s version was a one-off and is unlikely to be replicated).
Lack of high level experience can be disastrous as Joshua v Ruiz 1 demonstrated. It's hard to imagine Larry Holmes ever looking so lost and confused in a boxing ring.
Joshua wasn't facing a heavyweight Sugar Ray Leonard that day but he acted like he was. Hopefully that's the last Amir Khan impersonation we will see from AJ.
But who knows what the future holds? Maybe Joshua will go on to defeat Fury and Wilder or maybe a new star will emerge?

I'm not sure Pulev will be the man to show us anything, that's one fight I have almost no interest in.Thomastearns wrote: ↑18 Jul 2020, 06:55Counter-puncher wrote: ↑18 Jul 2020, 05:05 everything Holmes is really good at, Joshua is pretty poor at.
