Dazn wanted a ggg trilogy and didnt get one. They should have made the contracts contingent on that.

Im 100 percent sure i could make a sustainable streaming product with some help from fans. It wouldnt be flashy with huge dollar amounts but it wouldn't be insolvent after 2 years

It now seems DAZN want to renege on their deal with Canelo.

DAZN made promises to Canelo and organisers for other sports that they can’t keep.

What’s next? Are DAZN going to break the terms of their $1 billion deal with Matchroom?

I dont know if its true or not but i would of thought every 300+million dollar contract would be detailed enough to have stipulations on opponents.... If not Canelo could fight me once a month for a year and make 365 million... seems implausible to me.
As i said i dont know the details, i dont know if those stipulations would be "board aproved", "Boss aproved" or purely of numerical ranking threshholds, but i think there would be something..

Fighters like Canelo and promoters like ODLH are killing boxing by milking these tv stations for all that they have got. A change is needed in the way that boxing is conducted.

What we do know is that the media regularly speaks to the head honchos at DAZN and GBP’s claims haven’t been refuted.

According to the Mike Coppinger tweet above, DAZN are apparently disappointed about Golden Boy failing to fulfil “its contractual obligation to deliver one premier Canelo Alvarez event per year”.

This wouldn’t have happened if DAZN had the legal right to refuse to sanction his bouts.

And to be fair, DAZN are wrong, because I feel Canelo’s bouts against Jacobs and Kovalev were both “premier” in nature.

The only fight bigger than those would be a third bout against GGG, but the Kazakh, by his own admission doesn’t want to face Canelo straight away. Instead he wants to fight Kamil Szeremeta.

And let’s not forget that GGG also has a multi-fight $100m deal with DAZN.

If Jacobs and Kovalev weren't good enough for DAZN, what's Canelo supposed to do? Face GGG once per year until his DAZN contract is complete?

I feel that GBP will make another attempt to orchestrate bouts between Canelo and Smith or Saunders, but if both Brits reject the fight (assuming legitimate offers were made), then surely DAZN doesn’t have any legal right to force the Mexican to take a 50% pay cut.

No disrespect to Callum Smith or Billy Joe Saunders, but they aren’t big enough names to justify the labelling of their potential fight against Canelo as being a “premier event”.

$35m, at $20 a pop, is 1.75m subscribers (using the monthly deal for the US)...how the fornicate did they ever expect to recoup that cost and break even? Typically boxing fans are older, they aren't tech savvy, and the younger ones, who are, know how to stream.

To me their competition ISN'T premium TV channels (HBO, Showtime. WOWOW etc) but is instead Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu, streaming services.

Bizarre model that needed a league behind it (like they do in other territories) and not a twice a year event, to get people on to the annual payment model. Even before Covid a model based on boxing seemed like it was bound to collapse sooner or later.

Yes, for fans it is much, much, much better than a PPV model. By far. But from a business sense, the break even point, one just the one contract, seems...impossible to hit. Yes boxing COULD hit big PPV's in the right conditions, but that's dwindled, the sport has cannibalised it's market, failed to produce bankable stars and will almost certainly need a reset.

I hope DAZN doesn't go out of business, but I hope this is a massive learning experience and a wake up call to the executives (see also - Quibi), throwing a shit tonne of money at something, by it's self doesn't work. You need to think the long game. How will contracts translate to profits? How is this workable? Is the number needed really achievable?


*Yes we need to remember not all countries are paying the same (i.e Japanese customers are paying 1750Yen - $16.46, and I think in Germany it was around €11.99 - $14), but lets use that $20 as a jumping off point. And from what I understand other territories are profit making whilst the US isn't.

Yea I would defiantly consider them premium and they should count. It is tricky though cause 90% of there following is in a country without dazn but both can be sold as live fights without a known outcome so should atoll do good numbers in the states. geeze I hope they are allowable opponents, they are 2 of the top 5 super middles in the world....

Neither was Daniel Jacob's, he just bought a belt with him.. But he was classed as a high-rated middleweight.

Just like Smith and Saunders are top 5 in the SMW.
