I know.. remember Charles Martin was a world champion too. Bloody hell. He, just like Stiverne we’re just transitional champions.

Transitional is an overstatement.

He walked the earth like a God, though.

Omar Amaya, one fight knocked out Alexis Arguello. Then never fought again.

I always imagine these type of guys years later sat in a bar boasting about knocking out a famous boxer and no one believing it.

Shingaki is a super unique fighter in Japanese boxing history.

He was their first IBF champion for something like 30 years as the IBF weren't recognised by the JBC. He's the only fighter to have won a world title under the old IBF Japan (super obscure IBF rival to the JBC), hence why almost all of his bouts have the "Unsanctioned" icon next to them on boxrec. He was a very decent amateur but should never have been fast tracked like he was.

His title win came against a very limited Filipino, he came close to losing in his first defense then got beat twice by Fenech.

On paper Fenech's win over his look good, but they say more about the early days of the IBF, and the fall out of Shingaki with the JBC. Shingaki is very interesting, but certainly not a fighter on par with some of the others mentioned.

There is a fighter who required no fights at all to secure a shot at a world title. Rafael Lovera lost in his pro debut to Venezuelan great Luis Estaba for the WBC light-flyweight title.

Masaharu Kawakami (he is listed as having had fighter on the TV graphic for the the bout, and did fight an bout that was later declared an exhibition)

Fury vs The 22-3 Highlander seemed impressive at the time. All of Fury's early fights after the debut were decent. On paper anyway - lot of padded records obviously.

Good thread, got me watching Patterson vs Rademacher on YT. Pete didn't win of course, but he was 20-17 after R2 and that deserves an honoUrable mention.

This reminds me of Kenya's John Odhiambho, who turned pro with a points win over Bunny Johnson in Denmark in 1980. Bunny was 53-14-1 (31) and the reigning British light-heavyweight champion.
