In theory, but my understanding, and I think David Haye alluded to this sort of one-sided thing at times, is that the rematch with Wlad would take place on a K2 promotion, at Wlad's chosen location, for a purse set prior to their first fight. If you went to Germany and knocked out Wlad, and the biggest money option was a rematch then fair enough but as champ you would have little control or say in things, it was still all run by K2, and if you beat Wlad again, you're contracted to face Vitali. Haye called it something like a slave contract. I think Fury has intimated at similar issues, and he did talk about unfair things taking place on K2 shows, like alleged rigging of the scale (to make Fury thing he had overtrained) and the foam padding in the ring. Sam Peter complained about the contract when he fought Vitali, and I think Adam Booth said a few similar things too.

That's interesting. Would they be able to set the purses for a rematch before the first fight though? I just wonder where that would sit with the alphabet boys if the Klitschkos' opponent protested (particularly a mandatory) - though said alphabet boys are quite adept at turning a blind eye. I didn't know they'd be contracted to fight Vitali - but that would have meant a unification fight and again the alphabet boys involvement and who knows what problems.

Haye was pretty much always complaining and negative and slagging about the klits wasnt he

Interesting that they'd rig scales to make dudes think the dudes are lighter ! i thought it woulda been the opposite

Eddie did the same to Ruiz, the WBC didn't mind as they just take a % of both purses so I don't suppose they would give a monkies. Don't think the 75/25% ratio works, or whatever the percentages are, in these cases if there is a binding contract. Just googled it, and according to Forbes, Joshua got between 60 and 85$m for the rematch, while Ruiz got 13$m.

Tyson said it in an interview, he weighed in at 17.9 for the fight with Klitschko, but knew he was 18.4, which after a bit of faff is what he officially weighed in at. Tyson felt it was part of several attempts to mess with his head before they stepped into the ring and fought.

True, and that is probably the worst example of this, as an ongoing practice, in recent boxing history. I wondered if it helped contribute to the general malaise of Klitschko challengers turning up, and not really giving it everything. What is the point when you're already contracted to a rematch, plus facing Vitali too, should you actually win the first fight ? To me, that was everything that was wrong about boxing. I preferred it when Buster Douglas upset the applecart and could then defend against whoever he wanted. If you beat the champ fair and square you shouldn't be legally contracted to face him again, and also his brother.
Holyfield had the guarantee there.

Haye was strung hard in the vitali negotiations he shut down.

There shit, if there’s a need and an appetite we’d see it again naturally, apart from that they just hold up good fights.

Joshua v Ruiz would have always happened again, why the fornicate we need to see fury v wilder again though.

It shouldn't be default, that's like a rigged election, keep voting until you deliver the result we want!

It should only be where there is a demand, by the public, the media etc, some fights cry out for a rematch that never happens, the result and the consequences of Whyte Vs Pov were inarguable, emphatic and should stand I think.

What if Whyte had won, would Povetkin have got a rematch? I don't think so.

Unless its a draw or a questionable/controversial decision there's no need for them.

I can almost understand it when a long standing champion is trying to protect his position & give himself an immediate chance at regaining the belt but there's no reason at all when its just between top contenders.

With the top level really only tending to fight twice a year these days, I think it makes the rematch clause especially annoying. In the case of Whyte / Povetkin there wasn’t even a title at stake so the onus should now be on Whyte to build himself back up to mandatory...

We all know how Whyte has struggled to get a bauble shot of any kind (partly his own fault)but Povetkin has made himself no.1 and should get a shot...this year please !!!!
I think they should be only in a world title fight, just one though none of this rubber match bollox because waiting in line is the next no.1 contender and why shoukd he be waiting longer going stale because the champion doesnt wanna lose his title?
