Re: Danny Williams retires

Not a bad idea, a chance for people to put their dough where their mouth is so to speak.
In a July 2018 interview he said one of his daughters had just finished school and his youngest had one more year to go.

It's not like hes in a wheelchair.
Hes already done his close protection bodyguard training, and I'm sure he can find work. Dont see why he deserves handouts.
Yes, there always are though. Imagine if just some of all those fans desperate for him to retire put up a tenner each.

I hate to say it, but Danny must also take the responsibility - nobody forced him to fight on - and wanting to put your daughters through private school is a bloody daft reason to continue to fight way past the point of being shot.punchers chance wrote: ↑16 Sep 2020, 07:59 Danny was at his best when he won the Lonsdale belt outright around 2002 (he was 29 years old then)
He kept a high level for a few years after that but in my opinion was already past his peak when he beat a fading Tyson.
He cashed in with the Vitali fight and maybe that was the time to call it a day.
But to be fair he maintained a good standard at British title level up to 2009 when he was floored by 8-4 Carl Baker in Prizefighter.
If that wasn't the point to hang them up, the crushing loss to Dereck Chisora for the British Title in 2010 should definitely have been the end. He was 37 at this point.
Since then there have been 33 more fights!
All of these have been outside the UK, and Danny has won 13 and lost 20, suffering 11 defeats inside the distance.
I cant help contrasting this with Alan Minter who retired at 30 after suffering a knockout by an upcoming next generation fighter.
For me, it's a slur on the sport that Danny went on for this long.

Plus he also beat Dominic Negus a few years back on what I think was a BIBA show at the Troxy...Petercattermole wrote: ↑16 Sep 2020, 08:53All bar the Lee McAllister fightpunchers chance wrote: ↑16 Sep 2020, 07:59 Danny was at his best when he won the Lonsdale belt outright around 2002 (he was 29 years old then)

Right there James, we're back on this. He isn't a charity case as you say. You could look at it as - cheers for the memories champ, have a drink on me and good luck to you (and quit fighting). I stopped following him after the Chisora fight, he had quite a few highlights up till then though. He seemed a decent sort as well.
