Billam-Smith vs. Riakporhe Return Could Co-Headline Yarde-Buatsi Bill

WBO cruiserweight champion Chris Billam-Smith is having to be patient.

Having won his title by dropping and outpointing Lawrence Okolie in his hometown of Bournemouth last May, Billam-Smith defended his crown for the first time against Mateusz Masternak, stopping the Polish challenger in front of his South Coast fans in December.

It was revealed several weeks ago that Billam-Smith’s next fight would be against Richard Riakporhe, but time has gone on and there is still no date or venue.

Both cruiserweights are promoted by Boxxer.

Riakporhe is 17-0 (13 KOs) while Billam-Smith is 19-1 (13 KOs). The two fought back in the O2 Arena in London back in July 2019 with Riakporhe winning a split decision over 10 rounds.

It always seemed likely they would box again, but when and where remains to be seen, although sources have said that Selhurst Park [Crystal Palace’s football stadium] and the O2 are both in the running, although officials have not completely ruled out going to Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium again, where Billam-Smith defeated Okolie, although that venue is looking unlikely.

Billam-Smith is trained by Shane McGuigan, who last weekend won the Trainer of the Year Award from the British Boxing Board of Control, almost eight years on from winning it the first time.

But McGuigan admitted Billam-Smith was waiting on the proposed light heavyweight clash between Londoners Joshua Buatsi and Anthony Yarde announcement before anything could be finalised for Billam-Smith-Riakporhe II.

“We are waiting on Buatsi vs. Yarde,” said McGuigan. “If it was going to be on [the] Buatsi-Yarde [bill], it would be a co-headline, but we’re sitting and waiting and we’re getting things pushed back a week and another two weeks, so we’re putting our foot down and saying, ‘This is the latest date,’ and it might mean that Chris is headlining and Buatsi and Yarde has to get pushed to another date, so it’s not really our problem.

“The most important thing is keeping momentum and keeping his [Billam-Smith’s] career going forward. I don’t want him to get stale in the gym. He’s been in the gym a while, so we will have a couple of deloading weeks, then we will ramp it up again.”

Billam-Smith is a diligent professional who stays in shape and works on himself as an athlete. The champion’s ongoing search for personal development and growth are what appealed to the trainer when he linked up with McGuigan several years ago.

“He's also always within a certain percentage of his weight, which is great, and that means we’re always there and thereabouts, in striking distance of six weeks or less than six weeks, like we had against Isaac Chamberlain,” McGuigan added. “That just shows that keeping and holding form and holding discipline when you’re just ticking over is really important.”

Only option is Shalom really and I can’t see that happening. Eddie doesn’t want to rock the boat with Warren so won’t make a play. He’ll likely sign back with Queensberry.

Frank just done an interview with Umar saying they still have Yarde under contract.

I think we know where this is headed.

Maybe he has a verbal contract with FW.......

Queensberry will have snuck an “option to extend” in or some shit.

Or for one of yarde rank tune ups they will have put in the contract that this dosent count to their main contract and is seperate.

Amazing people will skim contracts in an industry where people are notoriously pudenda… not even saying fwank is being one, but fornicate read every word and highlight comfusionsns or problems ect.

The senario where one person thinks they’re free and the other thinks they’re signed should be nearly impossible with a well written and understood contract.

Frank got Yarde title shots against Beterbiev and Kovalev despite Yarde being British level. The only guy worth anything that he's beat also beat him. The rest of his resume is full of cans. Although is dislike Frank's matchmaking, Yarde got way more out of the business relationship and his career than he should have got based on his skillset and his record.

FW has done a great job for Yarde and made him millions, got him 2 world title shots on the back of a southern area and Penta Continental title

what is the situation with FW contract? FW is surely too canny to claim he's under contract if he's not, he seems to be saying Tunde is bending his ear badly. Anyone informed on this subject matter?

He should be all over this if he has any sense at all. The biggest all-British fight he can make when he desperately needs a headline fight and fighter. Buatsi would be heavy favourite to win it too.

Can’t imagine Ben pulling buatsi from this. This is probably the highest reward to risk ratio out there for buatsi.

Ben Victim Shalom needs to supply a PPV fight to SKY, that's what he needs and desperately.

So clearly Warren has pulled a few strings with Paco at the WBO to call for this fight.

Now it gets interesting. Is he hoping that this interim belt (which is probably likely to be upgraded to full title eventually with Beterbiev’s inactivity) being on the line is enough to get Yarde back on board..

If so, do they look to ink the deal Frank and Ben Shalom already agreed too or do both promoters try to win a bid on there own..

'Showman' Yarde targets Buatsi fight after lay-off

Anthony Yarde says he wants to fight Joshua Buatsi or Artur Beterbiev in the near future as he prepares to make his return to the ring on Saturday.

The light-heavyweight has spent nine months on the sidelines, due to a "contractual dispute" with his long-time promoters Queensberry.

Yarde, 33, makes his return against Ralfs Vilcans on the undercard of Adam Azim v Ohara Davies, an event promoted by Ben Shalom's Boxxer.

Speaking at a news conference Yarde dismissed criticism about his opponent, who is unheralded and has fought most of his pro career in his home country of Latvia.

"I want to be in the ring. Everyone is going to have their opinion on the level I should be fighting, or the fight, or how big the fight should be," Yarde said.

"I want the biggest fights out there. That's Joshua Buatsi, that's Beterbiev 2, that's [Dmitry] Bivol."

Yarde has a loss on his record to the newly crowned undisputed champion Beterbiev in 2023.

Beterbiev stopped Yarde in a defence of his world title before going on to beat Bivol in their undisputed contest last Saturday.

Yarde failed in his first world title attempt in 2019, but expects another opportunity and said "three's the charm".

Queensberry's allegedly has not commented on Yarde's fight with Boxxer, but Shalom said the Englishman has not signed a long-term promotional deal.

"We don't have many genuine superstars that can capture the attention as mainstream stars and Anthony Yarde is one of them," Shalom said.

"There's Josh Buatsi, there's Ben Whittaker, there's Anthony Yarde all in the domestic light-heavyweight scene [in the UK].

"You can expect a showman. There's not many fighters, if any, in the division that can fight the way Anthony Yarde can fight. He is a super talent."

Yarde isn't a genuine superstar at all. Nowhere near.

The word superstar gets thrown around far too easily nowadays in boxing.

A superstar, to me at least, I someone that would get mobbed if they walked down the street. Barely anyone would recognise Yarde.
