Not sure if those Saturday Skysports shows are being looked at through rose tinted glasses.
There were some classics but also a lot of listless dross that left the viewer really underwhelmed. When Hennessy managed to get on Skysports the entertainment value went up but the relationship didn't last.
Adam Smith has been terrible for British boxing.

I can see why the rose tinted question is being raised but at the time I saw every week as an opportunity to watch either a quality fight or pick prospects to watch develop. There was enjoyment in that (for me at least).

He wasn’t well enough promoted for it. He headlined a Sky show at Bridgend Leisure Centre against Rich LaMontagne and couldn’t even fill it out. He fought limited opposition until Haye (outside of Braithwaite) and whilst he was pretty good value on a Calzaghe undercard he didn’t draw. Eddie might be greedy but he’s not stupid.

As there was for me. I really enjoyed it and watched everything I could. I just don’t really agree with the notion that Sky boxing was great then and is shit now.
There were certainly more shows then on Sky which was good for most of us more hardcore fans but, on average, the show quality wasn’t great.

There were some decent Saturday, and later Friday, night cards and some crap ones. Remember when Sky started that Fight Skool or whatever it was? They rated the young fighters with report cards.

I didn’t mind the Fight Skool stuff - similar to Matchroom’s next gen. From memory there were some early fights of Macklin and Kevin Mitchell on those shows. Can’t remember if there were any good decent fights though.

For some reason the only one I really remember is Nicky Booth boxing a young lad named Jamie Yelland. Mickey Vann told him off at the end for showboating.

I boxed Yelland in the amateurs, was a good boxer, think he boxed for the British title as a pro.

The only fight I can remember from it was Matt Macklin losing his 0 against Andrew Facey.
Just had a look on boxrec at some of the shows. They were mostly rubbish - usually only one 10/12 rounder on the shows and the rest were usually one sided 4/6 rounders.

I think there is some rose tinted glasses with Fight Skool - the music / titles used to get so much abuse on the forums - and the name fight skool.

He didn’t fight the opposition for there to be any chance of him being PPV until he fought Tszyu.
Frank promoted Ricky amazingly well. He was kept extremely active and they matched him with Tszyu at the perfect time. It made Ray a wealthy man!

There isn’t much depth at heavyweight now but I think Dillian is a good, tough fighter who is world class. He’s beat Helenius, Parker, Chisora twice, Rivas and was beating Povetkin until he got caught with a great shot. He’s easily top 10.
I listened to a John Fury interview yesterday - he had Whyte in his top 5.

I rate Fury as someone who could have rolled in any era. I also rate Usyk but he's still only a 200lb fighter (he could still easily make cruiserweight).
I don't particularly rate any of the others now that (Wlad) Klitschko has gone.
