He’s already a fading star - in music terms he burst onto the scene with a few smash hit singles (Froch v groves and Joshua v Wlad and a couple of others) and secured himself a lucrative multi album deal (sky contract)but since then he’s been churning out shite that the public don’t want while telling everyone it’s his best ever work which they all know it isn’t. His concept album (dazn) won’t appeal to his dwindling core audience and when his contract’s up he’ll slip into Z list obscurity.

Lol. How can you say he's fading when by far the two biggest box office fights ever in the UK are coming next year?

I think long term he'll prove to be very bad for the sport. Dont think his exclusive deal with Sky has worked well for viewers or for boxing, his free shows are atrocious, everything is about pushing the PPV model which reduces viewers and makes boxing more of a minority sport, although it undoubtedly works well for him. The days of big fights on ITV with half the country tuning in seems a long time ago and I think the average man in the street would struggle to name UK boxers outside of Fury and Joshua.

Agreed.

Fury, Joshua and Khan are the only active boxers, if Khan is still active, that more than 10% of adult Brits could put a name to, I reckon.

As I said in another topic, I believe him to be the best boxing promoter there has ever been in the UK (although modern comms channels have helped him significantly). HOWEVER, I think he is awful for the sport of boxing.
I'm amused at the idea of Eddie reading that and enjoying it until he gets to the bottom.

What sickens me about his stance on the £25 PPV charge for Joshua vs Pulev is the fact that the TV channel makes millions, the promoter is a multimillionaire, and the fighters are very rich too especially Joshua. The greed is off putting at a time when millions are facing hardship. Eddie can't get 70,000 in Wembley so there is a shortfall. No there isn't Eddie. This is a bunch of rich people lining their pockets during grave economic times. How about Joshua taking a bit less? Not a chance.

He's got a huge ego. Being born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Yes he's achieved a fair bit but who wouldn't given his silver spoon upbringing.

That's BS.

He's proven himself in his own right. He's a better promoter than his dad was. There's nothing wrong with parents helping their children out anyway. It's what they should do and it shouldn't be sneered at by the bitter and jealous. Eddie would have made money even if he'd started off potless, he's just that type of personality. Although I repeat, he's good for Eddie Hearn and a small circle of fighters and associates but not the sport overall.

Eddie H is the master of the shit undercard and then trying to sugar coat it. His undercards for PPV shows (even when the main event is not really PPV material) are absolutely disgusting.

Nothing will ever match some of the shows FW has put on in the past. The full monty shows were amazing.

I strongly suspect he's right. He could fit into any number of white-ish collar jobs where lots of money changes hands and salesmanship/aura are at a premium-high-end, estate agent, mortgage guy/financial advisor, recruitment consultancy, stock market, whatever- if it requires energy, ambition and an endless ability to sell, he'd be good at it, irrespective of any help his dad's given him, he certainly has those attributes.

face facts, like him, or not (I don't, particularly) we live in a world where the energy and willpower to endlessly spin a product/person is a bankable commodity. like him or not Eddie's got that.

He cut his teeth on Haye/Audley, that was his first big promotion. Nobody really knew who he was.

He is who he is because of his silver spoon upbringing. Show me someone who was raised with such privilege who hasn't leveraged the wealth given to them into something. It's the story of pretty much every "posh" kid who goes on to work in a decent job. Being successful in such a context is not impressive whatsoever and is completely expected. Hearn isn't automatically better than some street kid from Peckham. He just got every advantage in life whereas the street kid got none, that's all.

too many contradictory negatives to exactly piece out what you're saying, do I take it you generally mean either (a) people born into Eddie's kind of wealth always end up 'leveraging' it, or (b) people born without it, never do?

neither position is correct.

i take your point that it's easier to have that smug/arrogant charm and assurance if you are from a background like Eddie's? sure, but I see people born with nothing 'leverage' exactly the kind of personality Eddie has into successful/wealthy positions fairly frequently.

I guess my point is he's the son of a major boxing promotor and had absolutely everything given to him and every advantage. The relationships and respect and goodwill were already made due to his dads work. It would have been impossible not to achieve good things in his position as he comes into it with everyone giving him that goodwill and respect his father earned. He doesn't deserve to be lauded for it especially considering that to me he comes across immature at times and has a pretty big ego. I'd expect him to be way more humble given what he was given. Seeing people laud him as some exceptional pioneer rubs me the wrong way. At the end of the day he's done well but it was all expected. He's not some self made guy.

sure, he's had advantages, so has (for example) Francis Warren, what's he done with similar advantages? it's taken a lot of energy and commitment to take what he was given and leverage it, even if i dislike him i can't deny that

At the end of the day he's done well but it was all expected

really? was it expected, when Eddie took over, that someone would finally drag british boxing promtion into the 21st century? when he took over did people say 'in two years time there will be 160k people turn up to see a Froch fight and a Joshua fight at Wembley?' boxing finally getting casuals involved via twitter? all this was 'expected'? bollocks.

if it was expected, again, how come Francis Warren didn't do it years before Eddie came on the scene, if it was all that easy?

He's not some self made guy

I agree, though, that his constant references to himself as a 'hustler' and 'grafter', can be somewhat grating, but what do you expect? he's trying to sell his book as well, isn't he, 'Get Rich with Eddie Hearn', 'My Story, grafting your way to the top' or whatever it's callede? he's hardly going to say 'well I worked pretty hard but of course I got a leg up for which I'm eternally grateful and I'd be on my arse otherwise'?

He is how own brand now, he's selling himself as well as everything else, so take the 'hustler' bits with a pinch of salt.

There are four of us and we had next to nothing growing up. I still have not very much, I've run businesses and ticked over but I'm not driven by money at all. I've another brother who won't take a risk, another who is highly skilled and would be regarded as pretty successful by most,. Then, I've got another brother who is driven to the max, hungry for money and blessed with a big personality and big presence generally. He turns over millions every year and makes in excess of 500k personal profit a year. He was classed as thick at school.

My point is that even in the same household, with the same opportunities, your personality counts for a lot and I think Eddie has a great personality for selling (like C-P says).

I doubt the Cartel were paid that much by the BBC for recordings of fights to show the next night on Sportsnight. I can't remember any of their Albert Hall or Wembley shows being shown on the same night let alone live.
FW had live boxing shown on World of Sport on Saturday afternoon in the early mid/80's but live boxing on TV was rare.
Now any fight and every fight is live but we are paying through the nose for it with SKY and PPV money on top, gone from one extreme to the other now.
If Hearn hadn't done this then somebody else would have done , he just got in the door first.

sometimes I think he can talk sense and then other times its just total bollox , either way he goes on talking far too long ..

he is a bit of a hype merchant and often the shows just cant live up to the billing , as long as I aint paying I cant really complain too much !

I don’t mind him personally but Sky and that numbskull Adam Smith have created a monster.
By handing him a monopoly on all the UK shows we get to see, instead of allowing rival promoters to offer up their best fights so Sky can pick the best, we get crap like Hearn serves up every month: undercard fights dressed as main events...and that shambles from a couple of weeks ago, God help us.

And letting Hearn decide if we get to see Loma Lopez or Joe Schmo from matchroom v TBA ( GREAT guy though !! )

You make good points . I can't deny he's done well. I just think that it was made much easier because of inheriting the Matchroom company which was worth millions. When he pitched something to Sky, they were going to listen and give it a chance etc. He's pushed the barrier and done good things but I think anyone here would have done the same if not more in his position.

Francis Warren doesn't seem to give a toss. He was walking around obese for quite a long time until he lost weight. I think that shows a bit of laziness. It's not like he's working in a 9-5 and under pressure to provide for a family. He had no excuse to be carrying that amount of weight. I also think his dad being in the picture makes it harder for him to come through. His dad is the main man there whereas Barry stepped aside. One thing about Frank that we can't deny is that he is one of the most driven promotors in the UK. He's taken a bullet and kept going. Took a hiding from Tyson apparently and kept going. Wazza is a legit gangster type. I don't think Francis has that drive in him.
