Not sure on weight either..

“Thank God there’s been no difficulty making 112 pounds,” Martinez said. “With good training, I’ve had no problem. I’ve even been down to weigh 111, so I’ve been great at 112. Julio Cesar Martinez Aims For Arroyo Title Defense On Canelo Undercard

Julio Cesar Martinez looks to revisit his past for the immediate future.

The reigning WBC flyweight titlist is angling for an appearance on the undercard of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, boxing’s pound-for-pound king and reigning unified super middleweight titlist who eyes a September ring return. Martinez hopes to land a slot on the undercard of his stablemate and mentor, preferably in a rescheduled title defense versus Puerto Rico’s McWilliams Arroyo.

The bout would come less than three months after Martinez’s latest win, a sensational sixth round knockout of countryman Joel Cordova atop a June 26 DAZN telecast from Guadalajara. The show was the first entry in a newly formed series between Canelo Promotions and Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing to air live from Mexico. Martinez made the third defense of his title and now hopes for his next one to land on his biggest stage yet.

“Señor Eddy Reynoso (Martinez’s head trainer) told us that if we finished off Cordova early and spectacularly, that we could [possibly] appear on Canelo Alvarez’s next show,” Martinez told Boxing Scene. “All that needs to be determined is [the date] and we will be ready.”

Martinez was twice before scheduled to appear on the undercard of DAZN shows headlined by Alvarez, only to have to withdraw for varying reasons.

The 26-year-old knockout artist from Mexico City fell ill ahead of his eventually canceled title defense versus Francisco Rodriguez last December 19, a show that saw Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KOs) become a true four-division titlist following a landslide decision win over WBA super middleweight champ Callum Smith in San Antonio. Two months later, Martinez was unable to proceed with a mandatory title defense versus Arroyo, as a hand injury forced him off of the February 26 DAZN show in Miami Gardens, where Alvarez stopped Avni Yildirim after three rounds.

Arroyo remained on the card, knocking out late replacement Abraham Rodriguez in the fifth round to become the WBC interim flyweight titlist.

A healthy Martinez is ready to honor his obligations at a weight where he plans to run the tables before setting his sights on becoming a two-division champ.

“Next for us, we look to make the mandatory (title defense) against Arroyo,” notes Martinez, who won the title in a ninth-round knockout of Cristofer Rosales in December 2019. “Hopefully, he is ready for us in what will unquestionably prove to be a great and memorable war.

“After that, I want to become the undisputed flyweight champion. Once I achieve that, I would love to go to [115 pounds] and face the best there, like [lineal/WBC/WBA champion Juan Francisco] ‘Gallo’ Estrada and [former four-division champ Roman] ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez.”

Don’t see this being on the Canelo undercard now.

Hearn/Matchroom have nothing to do with that.

Demetrius Andrade-Jason Quigley middleweight title fight headlines Nov. 19 tripleheader, sources say

Demetrius Andrade and Jason Quigley have agreed to terms for a middleweight title fight that will headline a DAZN-streamed championship tripleheader on Nov. 19 in New England, sources told ESPN.

Murodjon Akhmadaliev will defend his unified 122-pound championship against Ronny Rios in the co-feature, sources said. Julio Cesar Martinez puts his 112-pound title on the line vs. McWilliams Arroyo in the opening bout.

All three fights pit champions promoted by Matchroom Sport's Eddie Hearn against challengers aligned with Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions. The promotions have yet to lock down a site for the card, but sources said it will be held in New England.

Andrade (30-0, 18 KOs), ESPN's No. 3 boxer at 160 pounds, made the fourth defense of his title in April with a unanimous-decision victory over Liam Williams. The 33-year-old from Providence, Rhode Island, has been dominant during his 160-pound title reign but has yet to face a formidable foe. That won't change with this bout.

The slick southpaw will be a heavy favorite to turn back the challenge of Quigley (19-1, 14 KOs), a hard-nosed fighter coming off the biggest win of his career. The 30-year-old Irishman scored a majority-decision win over Shane Mosley Jr. in May and will now step up to the elite level for the first time.

The other two title bouts on the card figure to be far more competitive.

Akhmadaliev, a 26-year-old from Uzbekistan, is ESPN's No. 1 boxer at 122 pounds. He won the unified championship from Daniel Roman in January 2020 and successfully defended it in April with a stoppage win over Ryosuke Iwasa.

An Olympic bronze medalist, Akhmadaliev (9-0, 7 KOs) is considered one of the brightest young talents in boxing.

He figures to face a stern challenge in Rios (33-3, 16 KOs). The 31-year-old from Southern California is ESPN's No. 8 junior featherweight. Since suffering a sixth-round knockout to Azat Hovhannisyan in February 2018, Rios has reeled off four consecutive wins, most recently outpointing Oscar Negrete in February.

Martinez, ESPN's No. 1 flyweight, has torn through the competition at 112 pounds under the guidance of reigning trainer of the year Eddy Reynoso. The 26-year-old Mexican is coming off a sixth-round TKO of Joel Cordova, and like Akhmadaliev, Martinez (18-1, 14 KOs) is on the cusp of pound-for-pound recognition.

Arroyo (21-4, 16 KOs) is a 35-year-old from Puerto Rico who has faced some of the best fighters in the sport. Among those: decision defeats to Roman Gonzalez and Kazuto Ioka. He has won four straight since the loss to Ioka, his latest outing a TKO victory over Abraham Rodriguez in February.

The DAZN card comes one day before Terence Crawford and Shawn Porter meet for a welterweight title on ESPN+ PPV.

Press Release

Julio Cesar Martinez says he would love to fight IBF champion Sunny Edwards – but admits that tomorrow night’s WBC World Flyweight title defense against McWilliams Arroyo is his toughest fight yet as they clash at the SNHU Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire, live worldwide on DAZN.

TICKETS START AT $30 (PLUS FEES) AND ARE ON SALE NOW FROM TICKETMASTER.COM

Martinez (18-1 14 KOs) puts his belt on the line for the fourth time in a hotly anticipated bout with Arroyo that’s been postponed twice. The Mexico vs. Puerto Rico battle could steal the show on a night with four huge World title fight, with interim champion Arroyo (21-4 16 KOs) bullish in his belief that he will rip the belt from ‘El Rey’.

The 26 year old is confident that he’ll retain the belt though and predicts a war with the challenger, and is targeting his fellow belt holders next year as he looks to follow in his idol Canelo Alvarez’s footsteps and become undisputed before moving up.

A fight with Briton Edwards appeals the most to Martinez, with the Mexican having traveled to the UK to face his brother Charlie in August 2019, and the fight ending in a no-contest after Martinez landed a shot with Edwards on a knee having been floored by the all-action star. That’s a chapter that the champion would like to close, but he knows he has serious business to take care of first in the shape of Arroyo.

“I’m excited, I’m happy and I’m very motivated because as they say, there’s no date that doesn’t come and no commitment that doesn’t get completed, so I am very ready to face this challenge,” said Martinez.

“We’re getting to know new territories and we’re excited to be able to come to new cities and meet new fans, and I hope that they are happy with my performance.

“I am in a great place physically and mentally, we’ve taken care of every single aspect in the preparation to come in 1000 per cent ready, I am really anxious to get back in the ring. I know he is coming here to win, to take my belt, and we are prepared for that. I can win on points or by KO, it’s the win that’s the most important thing.

“The fight has fallen through twice and we know that, so it’s a fight that has been highly anticipated. We want to win this fight well and then look to face the other champions and unify the division, to show who is the king.

“We can brawl, or we can move around and box, so we will see who has the most sensitive chin on the night. He said that he’s going to bring everything he’s got, and I hope he does, because that will mean the fight will not go the distance – we come with everything but fear.

“We want all the belts, so Sunny Edwards, Artem Dalakian and Junto Nakatani – that’s the goal. But if it can’t happen in the next year, we would have to move up to Super-Flyweight where we can have fights with Juan Francisco Estrada, Chocolatito and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai.

“It would be an honor to fight Sunny, a great opportunity and to put behind what happened in the fight with his brother Charlie. He has a belt, and we want to unify, so gladly we’d go to England for the fight.”

Martinez’s clash with Arroyo is part of a huge quadruple header of World title action in New Hampshire, led by Demetrius Andrade (30-0 18 KOs) defending his WBO Middleweight title against Ireland’s Jason Quigley (19-1 14 KOs).

Murodjon Akhmadaliev (9-0 7 KOs) defending his WBA and IBF World Super-Bantamweight titles against José Velásquez (26-9-2 19 KOs) and the second step on the path to crowning an undisputed women’s champion at 140lbs sees Kali Reis (18-7-1 5 KOs) takes on Jessica Camara (8-2) for the WBA, IBO and vacant WBO straps.

That should be a TKO win for Martinez, a head clash did open up the cut but Arroyo made the decision to quit not the doc/ref, you seen as soon as he went back to corner after the 2nd he wanted out, shame as it was shaping up to be a cracker, both men down from left hooks in the 1st , Arroyo dropping Martinez early then Martinez returing favour at end of round with a more hurtful KD, Martinez had Arroyo down again in the 2nd , looked like it was the right hand this time that done the damage and Martinez was coming on strong

Arroyo bailed for me, it was bleeding bad but not enough to stop fight imo, should be a win for Martinez instead of NC

- A rarity for me to be in complete agreement with you, yet there it is. Let us hope and pray Peace in Syria is next.

Meanwhile, for sure we need better officiating in a guaranteed head clash of Porter vs lefty switch hitter Crawford, but will we get it?

Can hardly saying he was losing it was only 2 rounds - he dropped Martinez as well.

TBF, It was starting to look a little one-sided and he did have 2 cuts above his eye.

He dropped Martinez, but suffered 2 harder KDs after that. Martinez had more of a flash KD, he was ready and pumped after getting up. Arroyo was looking hurt.

I was at this fight last night and this fight was electric inside the building. We were so disappointed how things turned out. But honestly, that fight was not lasting many more rounds with that pace and the bad intentions on ever punch.

Martinez would have dusted him in my opinion bc he was just a live wire. He was frothing even in the corner pounding his chest from the moment he entered the ring. I really liked this kids energy and look forward to his next fight.

Looked pretty quitty.
Does a No contest still get you your full purse?, i assume so but the wording "no contest" just makes me have to ask the question.
If you have a nocontest in a mandatory are you still the mandatory?

If the answer to both those questions is yes, it makes the "self induced dr stoppage" very very suss, but also pretty smart really, and kind of justified. Why should you fight with the disadvantage of blood dripping in your eye because your opponent headbutted you... i know the standard is o try grit through it, but cuts undeniably change fights...
