Anyone think Jack Catterall's opposition over the last 3-4 years has in any way prepared him for the likes of Taylor?

FW was talking up Archie Sharp fighting the winner of Herring-Frampton this week. He's what, 7-8th, in the British top ten at the weight?
You can see it coming a mile off can't you ?
Typically with FW with his better fighters he will try and get them the title and to defend it a la JC, Hatton, Hamed and Khan.

On the other hand for fighters which he doesn't have the same faith he keeps them busy with inter continental title, or previously the WBU, keeps them unbeaten and gets them a big payday for a title they aren't likely to win, a la Yarde, Lockett etc

I think he had faith in DDD

I like Catterall and think he has got talent but unless he is an exception to the rule, he will fall short in a world title bid, then come back, tread water and maybe get used as a challenger for a title held by that point by a fellow Brit. I want to be wrong, I hope he wins the world title but it doesn't seem he has had the right preparation in terms of his past few fights. Yes, the match making trick has been done in so far as getting unknown opponents with half decent records but 3 fights in two years doesn't bode well for him challenging Ramirez who's faced Hooker, Imam, Postal, Zepeda and Orozco in that time. Unless Catterall is another Joe Calzaghe and can just step up like he did. Not sure Catterill is that though.

I always wonder how much he got Piper and Prince for getting battered by Michalczewski. They must have both got career best pay days.

Depends what you call big money! I think Lockett got around 250k like 15 years ago.
Not exactly retirement money but you can do a lot with it!

:TU: Yep 50-50 going in a injury going out . No fook up there , just giving the fans what they want ,,

Howard Clarke didn't net much either !

I suppose for Clarke it was an opportunity of lifetime and didn't really deserve the shot, but a shame he didn't take home more.

Ashley was a valid world title contender, although not at super middleweight.

Daniel Dubois expects fighters to try copying Joe Joyce approach, ready to hit comeback trail

Daniel Dubois’ stock as a heavyweight prospect unquestionably took a hit when he lost to Joe Joyce last November, quitting in the 10th round with an eye injury.

Any eye injury is a serious threat to a fighter, but Dubois took heavy criticism not just from fans or media, those people can be easily tuned out if a fighter wants. What stuck with Dubois, he tells the Daily Mail, was criticism from fellow fighters like David Haye, Dillian Whyte, and Carl Frampton.

Ricky Hatton was another, remembering a fight he had with an eye injury that he had to rally in. Hatton was less severe than some, saying at the time, “I just maybe think Daniel could have bit down on his gum shield a bit more and dug in.”

Dubois (15-1, 14 KO) will soon start start his comeback trail, whatever it’s going to be. He’s aiming to quiet the skeptics:

“I have to be ready to fight whoever they bring at me now. Guys that weren’t taking the fight before, they will have it now. They will try and copy Joe and I’m looking forward to that. Seeing what I have got up against me. They will think the aura is broken and they will think they’ll have me, that I’m vulnerable. ... One day, I’d like to get in the ring with Dillian Whyte and show him just how much of a quitter I am. All of it will give me the experience I need as a fighter. I’ll get better fights under my belt.”

A key thing to remember is Dubois is still just 23 years of age, extremely young for a heavyweight, and still has a lot of upside if he takes this as a tough experience, a learning experience, and doesn’t let it truly beat him. An “L” is one thing, basically every fighter suffers one — or several — eventually. You can certainly come back from it, and that will be the aim for Dubois.

Will he do it? Time will tell.

He boxed on even terms for 10 rounds with a world level heavyweight last time out. He showed some clear weaknesses though like defending the jab. He should watch how Holyfield used to parry and counter the jab.

The jab was NEVER missing that night.

Has anyone else, who was fought him tried to jab?

I don't think so. Not a good sign considering all the long giant heavies around now. They will all look to pepper him with long jabs now.

I’m intrigued to see what level of opponent they bring Dubois back against. He a young Man still, and he’s going with a new team, so an easier opponent would probably be fair, but despite the Joyce loss, he will still draw good figures, so they can’t go down to low.

For me an ideal candidate would be someone like; Wack/Kiladze or Mansour.

i mean people have started to get high on joyce now, and dubois was ahead in their fight going into the 11th and is only 23

if he isnt mentally rattled by that, he is still in a very good spot long term being as young as he is and with obvious fire power. the eye will need some watching too, hopefully it doesnt blow up easy from now

get him in with brian howard next and he'll look spectacular :yay:

but if they want some rounds for him, then the usual suspects are wach, hammer, etc. maybe rudenko as well

kiladze was mentioned above, and he's a punch bag but maybe that's the type they want him to restart against tbf. maybe michael wallisch and lenroy thomas in the same category

for someone he can ko big time, but with a slight risk, there is someone like carlos negron

but who am i kidding, its gonna be someone like pavel sour or nial kennedy isnt it

tbh im not fussed at all who he fights first one back from a tough defeat, but i do hope that in his post-defeat career there is more effort to match him in consistently solid fights. there was a lot of stuff like the cruiser dutchman, the japanese guy, etc that did nothing for him but fatten his ko rate. he was usually matched vs the types of opponents made to be stopped hard

Wach would be awful. Steel chinned, walked forward. He could have Joyce recurring nightmares
