if this fight was 2 years ago i think with burns experience he would have got to james and frustrated him making gas from missing and won points , i think now james is a solid boxer now with experience and also knows when to throw his power shots , i can see jt stopping rickster late mid, good fight as burns is class just what does he have left , i jt is learning and getting better each fight showing real progress

Has this fight actually been made?? Can not believe how one sided people have this. Ricky is a far superior boxer and James is very vulnerable. Ricky also has a solid chin. On paper he lost to Selby but that was a very close fight. I felt Ricky won. If Ricky is 80% he wins by stoppage a lesser Burns wins on points. I like Tenny and want to see him do well but to beat Ricky he would need Ricky to be way past it. Interesting fight if it happens.

Get what you are saying but burns will have been inactive for 18 months come fight time. At that age its a long time.

Selby would likely struggle with tennyson too. Be an interesting fight though.

If tennyson is calm and doesnt think hebcan walk through burns he should win. Just box to his level for a few rounds then put intensity in him when he thinks hes comfy. Everyone knows how fit burns is so its setting a false sense of security to beat him

I think this is a good fight...I would like to see how this "improved " Tennyson fares at this level before even contemplating world class.

Ricky has once said he would like to have 100 fights...hard man so not surprised hes continuing

What a great night and fight that was to watch. One of the most enjoyable fights I've seen. Combined a small hall atmosphere with a genuine world level fight and a great story.

Moses, Martinez,Mitchell, Katsidis, underdog against Earl took his 0.. Figueroa was a strange one, bad reffing ruined his win ,Relihk he beat and would have trounced in his time, I believe lightweight Ricky that fought Mitchell beats PED Beltran at lightweight PLEASE RETIRE SOON RICKY

I don't think he has the strength to gring out a win anymore, but he did send Scooty to Kingdom Come and Janes has a dodgy whisket

Ricky Burns has never been stopped, never once just said fornicate it no more today lad like it would have been ok to take the full count, here..the jaw..

I imagine when burns is stopped everyone will say give it up. He will think different

I think Tennyson stops him.

Burns has had a great career. I worry that he’s the type of fighter to start finding positives in losing performances and to keep fighting.

I thought both Selby and Burns looked way way past their best.

Eddie Hearn confirms James Tennyson’s next opponent

James Tennyson [28(24)-3(3)] will face former three-weight world champion Ricky Burns [43(16)-8(0)-1] next, according to Eddie Hearn.

Rumour has been circulating the Belfast puncher and the Scottish veteran had agreed to fight and were close to confirming a date.

However, official conformation hasn’t been forthcoming, until yesterday that is, when Hearn confirmed what should prove an eagerly anticipated clash.

The Essex promoter, who also works with Katie Taylor, revealed during a social media questions and answer session, that the fight was made and will take place in May.

After stopping world-ranked Canadian Josh O’Reilly in his last outing Hearn suggested Jorge Linares would be the ideal next step.

However, ‘The Assassin’ will next be in against a three-weight world champion from closer to home in Scotland’s Burns.

Three-weight world champion Burns is now back down at lightweight and, following his defeat to Lee Selby back in October 2019, is looking for one last shot.

Linares may have been a better name in terms of bridging the gap between Tennyson and the elite names in the division but with the current pandemic affected lie of the land, Burns remains a good fight.

He is a name known to fight fans and is up there with Scotland’s greatest ever fighters.

The 38-year-old also gave Selby a good fight last time out and has never been stopped.

Tennyson, 27 hasn’t gone the distance since 2016 and has stopped every lightweight placed in front of him, including the likes of Craig Evans and Gavin Gwynne.

Irish-boxing.com confirmed earlier this week that Tommy McCarthy was lined up for an early May European title defence.

The news ‘Tenny’ is to be out in the same month will have Belfast fans hoping they both appear on the same card, as it would be viewed as step one toward Matchroom bringing both to Belfast for a big Odyssey Arena show.

Ricky has said a few times that he'll drop down the levels and be a journeyman - he just loves boxing.

Being in a gym with Burns would of helped him enormously.
