The UK also has some of the best boxing fans in the world. There have been more than a few British boxers who have been treated disgracefully when fighting abroad. Poor Johnny Owen comes to mind.


Back to the subject in hand, the stand-out performances from Hagler that are permanently etched in my minds eye are his wins over Sibson, Hearns and Mugabi

Considering it was over 40 years ago and half of us weren't even born, I'm not sure how relevant this comment is. Hagler was a very popular fighter here in the UK.

You'd have been better off saying, 'RIP champ'.

Very surprised and saddened to hear this. Marvelous was relatively young; last pictures I seen of him he looked in great shape for his age, and kept close to gyms for various reasons Lennox Lewis's post mentioned.

I guess exercise and staying in shape has minimal benefits to a long life.

Does anyone know how he died? He always seemed healthy and while he had a lot of fights he didn’t fight on too long . RIP. I always thought he was a success story in the way he seemed so content and chilled out in retirement

His fight with minter is one of my first boxing memories. Can’t believe he’s gone at such a relatively young age - I saw the thread title and it didn’t register, I thought there must be some other boxer named marvelous.
