Duran beat Edwin Viruet outright. I don't know what fight you were watching.

Same fight everyone in the Nassau Coliseum was watching. Viruet was so beat up at the end he was bouncing around like he was ready for 10 more rounds. When the crowd loudly booed the decision Duran was reduced to trying to confront Viruet and call his mother names like the class guy he's always been. Edwin outjabbed the hands of stone and laughed at him to the final bell.

All I saw of Edwin Viruet was that he ran like a chicken and fought like a clown. He lost.

If Duran was smart he would have forced Viruet to go toe to toe with him like he did when he fought Leonard in Montreal. Leonard wanted to stick and move, but Duran wouldn't let him. For some reason he didn't do the same with Viruet.

What punches? You don't win a fight by running and clowning. That's all Edwin Viruet did.
Now, was that THE BLUEPRINT to beat Roberto Duran? You gotta be more aggressive. I think Sugar Ray saw the video and copy what Viruet did. The DIFFERENCE was that Duran was in shape for the Viruet fight. He was not on an OFF NIGHT like in New Orleans

Duran still beat Viruet. Just that edwin did better than anyone thought. Even the AP had Duran the winner.

They were wrong. A case of an underdog doing better than expected. much better, but not enough. Go watch on youtube and decide for yourself.

I scored it a few years ago. I had it 5-5. As usual, Duran struggled with a guy who boxed instead of going toe to toe.

Off night in New Orleans?

Leonard was too slick and Duran quit like a dog.

All Viruet did was clowning and running loke an idiot. He was the first guy to fight Duran like that. That is why the crowd thought that he won. Because he stole the hearts of the audience by doing a show. Play cutesie, like Muhammad Ali.
Leonard took that BLUEPRINT and modified some other stuff. He knew Duran was in AN OFF NIGHT.
But, De Jesus beat him on ON NIGHT. Duran was in his prime and in shape for the bout and Esteban beat him. The ONLY MAN to really beat Duran in his prime. Something that Leonard cannot brag. He even went to Panama to know why Duran quit. He was looking for answers. Because at the time, the media was saying that Duran quit, not that Leonard won. It bothered Sugar Ray for almost 35 years that fight.

Yes it was an OFF NIGHT by Duran. Montreal Duran vs New Orleans Duran is like night vs day. Two different fighters.
The one in Montreal looked razor-sharp, crisp and ready. Even the muscle tones in his body were perfect. He wanted to be there for the kill.
The New Orleans Duran looked like he didn't want to be there before the opening bell. Duran knew that he was not 100% ready. The body language in the fight said it all. In round 5 when he pushed Sugar Ray and Sugar Ray went down the canvas, Duran wanted the referee to give Sugar Ray an eight-count. He did not get it. It was a slip. That could have been a confident booster for him, but it turned out it was not. Sugar Ray knew also that Duran was not ready.
But, De Jesus did something that no one has done. To be THE ONLY MAN that really beat The Hands of Stone. The ONLY MAN to knocked him down. And he did it TWICE in the first round. With Duran at his very best.
But Sugar Ray? He had to look at videotapes. He had to ask for a bigger ring. He asked for the rematch knowing that Duran could not be in shape that soon. Sugar Ray had the leverage to negotiate and offer Duran's manager, Carlos Eleta, an enormous amount of money that Sugar Rayy knew Eleta could not refuse. All those estipulations worked in his favor. Duran looked FLAT. Everybody knows that he looked FLAT. Only the HATERS like you do not want to accept it for their golden boy's agenda.
But, the TRUTH is De Jesus win over Duran was more legit than Leonard's. Sugar Ray's win over Duran looked like a cheating strategy. Like something was not right in the deal.
De Jesus is THE ONLY MAN that really beat the prime Duran. He could brag it and sleep in peace.
Sugar Ray could not sleep for 35 years looking for answers to see if his "win" mattered.

One of your worst posts ever, and that is saying a lot.
Duran looked the same in the second fight in the first. The "he wasn't in shape" excuse is about as lame as it gets.
What the hell is the relevance of Duran wanting a knockdown when it was slip? He would have done the same in any fight.
Duran was not rushed into the rematch. You act like it was a week after the first one. It was 5 months after the first fight. Duran went less than 5 months between fights many times in his career. to mention that Leonard had no more say so than Duran when the rematch would be. If Duran wanted to wait a year, he could have. The quick rematch excuse is total BS.
Duran quit when he lost. Leonard did not when he lost. Therefore, if anything Leonard win is more legit. He at least went the distance like a man.
Stop being a crybaby. Duran lost deal with it. You can't use the crybaby excuses for your favorite guy and not use it for everyone.

Dejesus did not have a lot of fights or win an Olympic gold medal. He didn't even make the top 100 all time greats. Frankly, he isn't thread worthy.

You may like to do some research on a fighter by the name of Thomas Hearns, he was pretty good it’s a shame his career passed you by somehow

We all know that The Hitman did not beat a prime Hands of Stone.

I'd say that by a wide majority, most people consider Duran's most impressive win ever, his razor thin decision over Sugar Ray Leonard in Montreal, and that was at Welterweight. Duran was still only 29 years old, when SRL avenged that defeat in dramatic fashion. He got stopped in his very next bout after his greatest ever ring performance.

If you believe that Duran was in shape and was as the same in Montreal to give your boy props, go head. Anybody that believes that Duran was 100% in New Orleans must be wicked, blind or simple biased. And you are BIASED. How much biased? I don't know.
Carlos Eleta, Duran's manager sold Duran. He did not look for his fighter's interest but for himself. The BAIT by Leonard's camp worked. They figured that $8 million dollars was money for Duran's management team to go for it and they that had never seen that type of money, fell on the bait. There was nothing that Duran could do in such a small period of time. The Duran's management team askef for an extension because Duran was not losing weight fast enough. So, to me, Duran just worked out to lose the weight. Not to be prepared physically nor mentally like Leonard did.
And it seems that you don't watch that fight much. In round 5, Duran wanted the referee to count Leonard's slip. He did not get it because obviously, it was a slip. If it were a legit knockdown, that not only would boost Duran's confidence, but any other fighter's confidence.
Duran whupped Leonard at Leonard's very best.
Leonard never did beat him at Duran's very best.
But, Esteban De Jesus gets all the praise in the world. He is THE ONLY MAN that beat the great Roberto Duran in Duran's prime and at his very best. He is THE ONLY ONE that can brag and take it to the grave.
But, Sugar Ray? He always had doubts if his win was legit. And it still bothered him until this day.

boo hoo. there is always an excuse for your guy. Your guy almost always wasn't at his best when he lost. Never occurs to ou that his opponent is not always not as his best.
Your comment about the slip and Duran's confidence is stupid. He would have whined about it if it had happened in the first fight.
