I have to say Katie Taylor. Amateur and Professional dominance. Wayne Mc Cullough would be second on the Amateur & Pro criteria in my view but his professional career was outstanding.
If we are dealing with Professional only then Frampton (I know his weight class got removed from the olympics) is absolutely in the mix, Collins's and Mc Guigan too.
I think Mick Conlan will eventually be in the conversation. Jay Quigley could also be in it too as he was the first Irish fighter to win the World championship.
For every woman boxer there are at least ten times the number of male boxers. This diminishes Taylor's achievement. When you have Ebanie Bridges and Shannon Courtenay boxing for a world title it puts women's boxing into perspective.

They have to have been born on the island of ireland for any serious debate or you're going to get some ne're-do-wells on here claiming shane mosely.

For me, the number one is Steve Collins.
Frampton is definitely in the conversation. There are a load of other guys who have not been mentioned anywhere near enough - Jimmy McLarnin for sure.
Some of the fighters that he beat are P4P greats - the likes of Fidel LaBarba (x2), Pancho Villa, Bud Taylor, Kid Kaplan, Sammy Mandell (x2), stopping Benny Leonard, Barney Ross, Tony Canzoneri and Lou Ambers...
Yeah, that is a who's who of greats over the course of ten years...

If he wasn't, yet I mean it's Jimmy McLarnin no doubt about it. McLarnin's resume beats Frampton and McGuigan's combined.

Has anyone ever explained his colouring? I'm sure I read some article about there being some Irishmen who settled in Mexico. I think they were soldiers or mercenaries.

A lot of Irish settled in Latin America over 100 years ago so likely a throw back from that.

I sense the forum Is going to get a fair bit of mileage out of the Mike McMcallum debacle
Has to be McGuigan for me, the triumphs over LaPorte, Pedroza and Taylor were outstanding, not to mention several other solid wins, backed up by a highly credible amateur career.
Nations were simply glued to their TV sets time and again when Barry took to the ring. The whole Framption thing never convinced me that he was a world beater slicing through the opposition, however, the first win over Santa Cruz (which was very close) was very noteworthy.

I think Barry was a touch overrated because he was a proper household name.

He was quite literally a house hold name, but I think the performances against quality opposition earned him genuine respect too.

Collins and Mcguigan for me. Also felt it was a shame Frampton moved up to Featherweight and, like Ricky Hatton properly spent a little too long as a prospect before challenging for a world title.
Hes in the mix but would have liked to have seen him try to do a full unification at super bantam
