even among us hardcores, i almost rarely in comparison see those terms used for come forward guys, guys that are skilled infighters, good at using angles coming foward , good at cutting off the ring, etc

but if a guy jogs backwards around the ring, and out scores the guy with flicking jabs, then it's lovely/beautiful/etc

its not a knock on that approach either. it's a legit way to win a fight. i just dont understand why itt seems to monopolize the 'smart/lovely/wonderful boxing' terms

ya, but who says the guy coming forward needs to take 2 to land 1. and cutting off the ring , getting a fighter in a corner, being able to move forward quick to close the distance etc..are as much of abilities as moving backwards and avoiding an opponent too

but you almost never hear that that equates to 'beautiful' boxing, 'smart boxing', that it's such an art form, and other pretentious stuff
just as an example Matt Macklin went nuts over Chocolatito vs Yafai.

This is another fallacy, maybe in the amateurs you score a fight that way, but if someone comes forward and is hit with 2 powderpuff punches in order to land one that busts his opponent in the mouth or ribs then that should rank much higher given half the criteria is defined by effective punching & aggression.
I meant it’s more skillfull to hit without being hit, that’s better than taking any punches.

Like Chippenham's Mike McCallum.
I've found many Chippenham fighters do it that way, I'm not sure whether they copied McCallum or if it's something in the water there.
Even drunks double up the the lead hook inside after slipping the jab in Chippenham
It dates back to when Azumah Nelson used to run Golddiggers nightclub in the town and he would only allow guys in if they could demonstrate that move at the door. McCallum used to work in the cloakroom and picked it up there, largely through training with H from Steps, who did regular PAs at the club.

McCullum used to be a real shy kid but when he begun working in the cloakroom and started seeing a bit of life it brought him out of himself giving him the confidence which served him well in his career.
Obviously meeting Nelson had a big impact but also the impact of H from Steps shouldn't be underestimated.

Equally the term “one dimensional” seems reserved for aggressive pressure fighters, never seen it used to describe someone like erislandy Lara who boxes well on the back foot but has consistently been found lacking when called upon to hold his feet and work inside

He now lives in Pontypridd with his 2 Jack Russells, H and Zumah, and his wife Pat. Can usually be seen at the local Lidl stocking up on tins of Mackerel - old dietry habits die hard.

Probably because the term 'boxing' rightly or wrongly is synonymous with defensive movement, like 'he can box but he can't punch', of course coming forward and punching your opponent is also boxing, but just seems to be the way the word has evolved, defensive movement= 'boxing' and coming forward= 'fighting'. Guys like GGG get credit for being good boxers and they aren't exactly twinkle toed so I guess it depends

margaret thatcher wrote: 30 Apr 2021, 18:24 just wondering?

why do we save words like beautiful, lovely, tidy, art form, etc boxing to describe a guy moving backwards

but a guy who wins moving forward is not seen in the same way?
I think it depends on the person. For instance Canelo likes to come forward and I'd consider the way he boxes with his head movement, and bending at the waist, and general defence whilst coming forward, beautiful boxing.

I'd say the same for Dimitry Pirog when he was fighting aswell.

It’s beautiful, it’s just not a macho word. You wouldn’t say Tyson launched a beautiful attack, for example. Beautiful makes you think more of finesse, style etc.

Whenever you saw McCallum's superb combinations in the ring, just remember that he was basing that tempo and timing on '5,6,7,8' by Steps. H had drilled that into him...'Go on Mike, let the hands go... 5,6,7,8!'

Exactly that, look back on classic KO's like against Don Curry and you can almost sing along with the timing and punch combinations

Thought Valdez looked beautiful last time out, and he really landed some bangers.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a huge fan of Prograis and his style.

It’s quite literally arguing semantics but you just couldn’t describe a typical Korean fighter or someone like Orlando Salido as beautiful.

I would say mainly because only good boxes can box and win going backwards.
Sure there a great boxers moving forwards but that can get diluted by a fair few pretty crude sluggers wading forwards. Anyone who watches a lot of boxing should be able to tell them apart, but I guess to some it looks the same../
