I watched Benn v Watson in America live on NBC around 5pm on a Sunday and it was like Benn was being groomed by the US producers as this invincible destroyer on his way over soon and it was being used like some kind of coronation for Benn - they’d all heard about him but hadn’t seen him yet.

That was a huge fight. Diehard boxing mates back home couldn’t get a ticket for that tent for love nor money. A who’s who of British celebs were ringside, like nothing you saw before in the UK. Every cast member of Eastenders and Coronation Street and every top-flight English footballer for a start...Linda Lucardi, Jonathon Ross, Linford Christie; all going to their first boxing match. You had Gary Stretch and Raquel Welch, a young Roy Jones Jr, young Lennox Lewis, unknown Chris Eubank and Michael Nunn all ringside near Frank Bruno. Madness.

In many ways, Benn-Watson kicked off the modern era of pro boxing. You never saw an arena entry before or that kind of glamour, with the whole Michael Jackson ‘Bad’ thing.

Brilliantly, Watson simply tucked up under the instruction of his experienced corner (Mickey Duff, Dennie Mancini) and allowed the 22-0 (22 Kayos - vast majority of which in a round or two and spectacular) Benn to punch himself out.

You couldn’t write it. Watson lived a mile or so away from the make-shift venue with his mother in a council flat.


Strangely, the Americans were so impressed by Benn in the loss that Bob Arum signed him days later and called him ‘my English Hagler’ and ‘the most exciting fighter the world’ (when Mike Tyson was at his absolute peak).

I am amazed that Tyson vs holifeild had tyson as a -2500 Favorited. in hindsight that seems absolutely mental.

Considering he had boxed 3-4 rounds in 5-6 years it’s absolutely hideous really.

Yes he was. He started off a decent heavyweight but took the journey man route for easy money.

I'll have to check it out. Minor fights like British titles never made it down here back then. I saw Eubank vs Benn because it was for a world title, that was a goodie.

The thing about this fight was the fact that Watson had better wins on his record but everyone over looked it because Benn was knocking everyone out on TV where as Watson was beating better but no TV coverage

Credit to Watson, he wasn't just blocking, but diffusing the shots with a floppy high defence- quite neat stuff-and landing some shots.

Muhammad Ali's defeat at the hands of Leon Spinks in February 1978 was a huge upset. Spinks went into the 15-rounder with just seven fights behind him and looked lucky to scrape a draw in one of them. Nobody expected him to topple the great Ali but Leon put it all together for one night and one night only.

LaMotta beating undefeated Robinson was quite the upset at the time. Good as Jake was.

Different times and it wouldn’t happen now as people constantly have access to information but Tyson Douglas was the only time I can ever remember in my whole life when people were told what the result of a sporting contest was and just flat out refused to believe it.

It was absolutely astonishing, thirty years later I can still remember my total amazement. The only other sporting upset I can compare it to is when Nadal finally lost a match at Roland Garros to Soderling which was equally astonishing to tennis fans but didn’t have the wider shock value that Tyson’s loss had

Kirkland Laing getting knocked out by journeyman Buck Smith was quite a shock.

I'm sure too that Buck Smith fought twice on the same night in different countries but later it was revealed that it wasn't Buck Smith after all. Strange boxer was Buck with a lot of fights he apparently didn't have.
