You beat the champion, and you're already contractually tied to a rematch, and (in AJs case and I suspect others) you'll earn considerably less than the guy you beat, in the rematch, despite holding the belts.
Football is also a business, but that Euro super league idea that went up in smoke earlier this year was going to keep the top clubs earning well, and free from relegation. Finish bottom of the league, and just go again next season. That particular thing provoked an outcry.
I preferred it back in the day when Douglas knocked out Tyson, and just defended for the highest purse. It was his choice, these days it would have been a contracted rematch. Which actually in that case the world did want to see.
I like AJ and always have, but because of stuff like this, I want to see a rematch, and for Uysk to repeat the win. Which will freeze AJ and Eddie out of the title picture. See how they like it. Would like to see AJ then jockey for position, only to be kept waiting 12-18 months due to other heavyweights and their rematch clauses.

I expect Usyk will be happy about the rematch. Will he get the lions share this time? it doesnt make sense why he would agree to a rematch for anything less.

Re: Should rematch clauses be banned by the board and world governing bodies?
I imagine it'll already be set out in pounds and pence in a signed contract, as was the case with Ruiz.
Ruiz has earned well with Eddie, and with him being the #1 contender I imagine it was fair, but I also figure AJ will earn more from the rematch, as he did against Ruiz (astronomically so). Eddie and AJ have been good for the sport but part of me does want to see them shut out of the title picture, mainly due to this rematch contract situation.
There is a lot of dust to settle but I imagine we will see Fury beat Wilder, then defend against Whyte, while Uysk beats AJ in a rematch in the spring, setting up Fury vs Uysk, but where such a scenario leaves the likes of Joyce remains to be seen.
Re: Should rematch clauses be banned by the board and world governing bodies?
Unlike football, every fight in boxing is an individual business arrangement between two parties. The bodies just sanction fights. The fights can go ahead with our without sanction.JimJim2009 wrote: ↑26 Sep 2021, 09:54 On the whole, it runs against the grain of what sport is meant to be about.

What boxing needs, if it is going to be a proper sport, is a governing body or series of bodies, like FIFA and the national football associations, that direct who fights who and and when.
This is not going to happen in my lifetime, in the lifetime of a child born this morning, or probably ever.
Re: Should rematch clauses be banned by the board and world governing bodies?
I think that we may be turning a corner with that - at least I hope that we are... With Fury signing to fight Wilder three times, the interest in it is very, very poor...JimJim2009 wrote: ↑26 Sep 2021, 09:54I preferred it back in the day when Douglas knocked out Tyson, and just defended for the highest purse. The second fight did not sell out and the upcoming fight is struggling to sell too...
The curious thing is, if they stretched the 3 fights out over a period of 4/5 years and fought (and beat) other HW contenders in between those fights, all three would probably be sellouts.... It would have made much more sense and been better business for everyone, the way it is now the event just feels jaded and stale... And (dare I say it?) unnecessary,,,
Re: Should rematch clauses be banned by the board and world governing bodies?
There's no way will Usyk get paid more than AJ... He just doesn't have his profile... But, I do expect the split to be a lot closer next time around...
And personally speaking, I hope that Usyk makes plenty of money from it, the guy comes across as a class act.

Joshua shouldn't take the rematch, at least not in his next fight. He will likely lose again unless he changes things.
Re: Should rematch clauses be banned by the board and world governing bodies?
All evidence thus far suggests that he's going for it... He told Hearn last night to activate the clause and that he's going straight back in to the gym, no vacation.peter barlow wrote: ↑26 Sep 2021, 15:00Joshua shouldn't take the rematch, at least not in his next fight. I'd love to see the rematch getting done in December instead of making us wait until next spring...

It’s an immediate rematch clause.
But Hearn and K2 have a good working relationship.. I’m sure they can meet again.

Tickets for the fight are thousands of dollars. If they were £40 I've no doubt they would do as many as they liked.Crease wrote: ↑26 Sep 2021, 14:55I think that we may be turning a corner with that - at least I hope that we are... Hearn mentioned AJs lack of activity is not helping him. December/January should be the target.Crease wrote: ↑26 Sep 2021, 15:03All evidence thus far suggests that he's going for it... Usyk isn't Andy Ruiz, it's going to be very difficult for Joshua in the rematch. If he loses 2 in a row it could be big trouble.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑26 Sep 2021, 15:04If he doesn’t take it next, there’s no guarantee.peter barlow wrote: ↑26 Sep 2021, 15:00 Joshua shouldn't take the rematch, at least not in his next fight. I'm not so sure about that, Mickey... Wilder has always been a hard sell to the American public, they've never really got behind him. He was defending the World Heavyweight Championship in an indoor arena built for tennis and wasn't even selling that out...mickey1975 wrote: ↑26 Sep 2021, 15:14Tickets for the fight are thousands of dollars. Maybe, who knows? I just know one average seat would have bought 50 at Tottenham.Crease wrote: ↑26 Sep 2021, 17:21I'm not so sure about that, Mickey... I know Eddie always says they are standard practice but he seems to have more than most promoters....and I'm convinced it's such a problem why he always seems to take months to get big fights over the line.
If rematch clauses are so common then why did nt pac rematch Jeff horn. I think it smacks of not having faith in your fighter

Yeah, this is how I feel. We've currently a situation where Joyce might not get a shot until he's too old, when he's paid his dues and been in the picture for a while.
I'd propose that champions must be ready to face a new challenger no more than 6 months from the date of their first fight. So you could still have a contracted rematch, but you'd need to do it within 2-4 months to be available for your next mandatory (should you win again).
I'd then grant extensions (in case the winning fighter was injured, say), giving them 9 months for the rematch if they make a defence before it. That way you could take half a year to recover, make a defence, and then do the rematch up to 3 months later. If the losing fighter's injured they'd just have to forfeit.

Yes. 100% by gov bodies. Don’t think they could legally ban them. But basicaly if you activate a rematch clause both fighters are dropped from the rankings. (Belt dropped obviously)

I don't believe that they should be necessary unless a fight was ultra competitive or controversial. I'd rather see someone defend against their mandatories instead of having automatic rematches, or even having voluntary matches. That used to be quite commonplace when I was a kid where champions had non-title matches.

All rematch clauses usually turn into is trilogy.
This was not a close fight.
Was a one-sided dominant performance.
Rematches usually should be for closer fights.

Just watching a Wallin interview for his fight with Whyte.
They've got a rematch clause.
What a fornicating joke all this is. Go on Wallin lad.

Wallin didn’t have to sign the deal. If he was dead set against it then he could have took another fight or taken less money for this one.
Now he’ll be well paid for the Whyte fight and will likely be very paid in the rematch in case he beats Whyte.
Re: Should rematch clauses be banned by the board and world governing bodies?
And of course as a fan, that's exactly what you'll want if Wallin beats Whyte. A rematch. No, of course it isn't. You'd want Whyte to get back in line and Wallin to get a chance to fight up.maverick23 wrote: ↑01 Oct 2021, 09:13Wallin didn’t have to sign the deal.
