David Benavidez-David Lemieux super middleweight clash set for May 21, sources say

David Benavidez and David Lemieux will meet on May 21 at Footprint Arena in Phoenix, Benavidez's hometown, for a Premier Boxing Champions on Showtime main event, sources told ESPN on Friday.

ESPN reported in December that the boxers signed contracts for the 168-pound bout that could line the winner up for a shot at a title held by Canelo Alvarez.

Already, Benavidez (25-0, 22 KOs) is looking ahead. He won't fight Canelo in 2022 after Alvarez chose a path that will lead to a September trilogy bout with Gennadiy Golovkin, so Benavidez expressed interest last month in a matchup with Demetrius Andrade.

he longtime middleweight champion is moving up to 168 pounds for a fight with Zach Parker that's slated for May 21 in the United Kingdom.

"I want to challenge myself," said Benavidez, ESPN's No. 2 super middleweight. "I'm tired of talking s--- and going back and forth with fighters that don't want to fight. It's a waste of time. It's a waste of energy. If a fighter does want to fight, that's what I'm here for. I'm not here to be on social media talking s--- to everybody."

The volume-punching Benavidez has twice held a 168-pound title and has never lost it in the ring. Instead, the 25-year-old was stripped once after testing positive for cocaine and a second time after failing to make weight.

Benavidez was slated to face Jose Uzcategui in November, but the fight was scrapped after Uzcategui tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance. Kyrone Davis stepped in on short notice and was stopped in the seventh round by Benavidez.

Lemieux (43-4, 35 KOs) promises to offer far more resistance. The former middleweight champion is 3-0 since moving to 168 pounds and is ranked No. 8 by ESPN, but Lemieux has yet to fight anyone approaching the top 10. Now, the 33-year-old will be installed as an underdog against Benavidez in what shapes up as an all-action fight.

The Montreal native was one of the biggest punchers in boxing when he campaigned at 160 pounds. That includes a spectacular KO of Curtis Stevens in 2017. During that middleweight run, he also scored a TKO victory over Gabe Rosado. Among his title defeats: a one-sided TKO loss to Golovkin and a lopsided decision defeat vs. Billy Joe Saunders.

David Vs Goliath
Except little David is older and shopworn and heading into an unhealthy beatdown against a 25 year old with a height and reach advantage that will see Lemieux's mother failing to recognise him afterwards.
Yay.

Poor fight atm. Why Bena doesn't move up at 175 and challenge guys like Zurdo Ramirez, Callum Smith or Yarde?

Simply put, I don't fault a boxer for staying busy, and taking the best available fight at their weight class. It's a better fight than what Munguia took against Rosado, or Charlo took against Monteil, or Janibek took against 38 yr old N'Dam.

We don't often get the fights we want, but at least they are fighting. Lemieux is better than Rosado or N'Dam, and also has a win over Stevens. The answer isn't always moving up. Benevidez Sr. and Jr. said his next fight will be Andrade.

I agree. I was looking forward to Saunders vs Andrade, but BJS found a way out of that one.

tbf all these were years ago and a division lower. Plenty of other guys at 68 that would have been better.

ya, so benavidez is fighting a career middle, who at super middle he could barely beat max bursak and twice got dropped on his butt

but sure, there are lesser middleweights in the world for a super middleweight to fight

I find it hilarious that Curtis Stevens is consistently listed as a top win for Mario.
Stevens was a club fighter on his best day......unable to he competitive with Jesse Brinkley ffs.
Prime Lemieux didn't offer much resistance to Marco Rubio and a faded version of the very forgettable Joacim Alcine.
How does he promise more resistance to Benavidez now?

lem was a decent b level middle at his peak, around 2015. beating ndam and stopping rosado were respectable, the ktfos of spike and stevens were fun. no ones saying these are great wins, but they put him comfortably in the lower top 10 range. but in 2022 at super middle he's not a good opponent at all for a guy who says he's trying to establish himself as an elite fighter.

watch the max bursak struggle to see lem at super middle. he didnt have the power or the toughness he had at middle. he'll be an easy to hit, crude midget without his mw pop, and get an absolute hiding from any top smw

this reminds me a bit of the fights danny garcia would have against faded champs.. the name looked good on paper and would add to his "__ wins over former titlists" list, but in reality these guys were well washed up. although in this case it's even worse than those garcia fights, as lem is fighting up a weight and not as good as most of them to start

Lem looks like an old man in that video. A bit like comparing Tyson in his recent exhibitions with him towards the end of his career. You still see the same moves but in slow motion and with no balance.

I guess Bena's management team is of the old fashioned mindset that as long as he is kept unbeaten his name will eventually be called in the Canelo sweepstakes.
Unfortunately Canelo isn't interested unless his opponents bring something to the table. Ideally belts.

He really needs to take a leaf out of Dillian's book and take on tough challenges that might appeal to Canelo in the future. Easier said than done as they are also in a holding pattern fighting no hopers but that's how you move ahead of the pack.

Lemieux's losses are almost more impressive than his best wins, if that makes sense. :OhYes: For some odd reason, the WBC think enough of him to put him at #2. I doubt if it goes past 6 or 7 rounds.
