Wow I had never seen Quarry KO 1 Shavers before. What a performance. Shavers endured so many power shots but would not go down. Quarrey must have needed 30 clean hits to finally finish Shavers. Very interesting after Gil Clancy practically calling HWT champ Foreman a duck for avoiding Quarry, Clancy was practically shouting at Foreman in disdain, saying why won't George do the fight, it's the biggest money fight out there for him. Foreman ended up beating Norton in March 1974 then lost to Foreman in Oct. Quarry would lose by KO to Frazier in June 74 after beating Joe Alexander in May. Then he lost later to Norton. But Quarrey looked awesome here vs Shavers. Note the cameo of Don King in Shavers corner.

Greg Richardson and Luis Angel Firpo both suffered first round KO losses in the second fights of their careers. The former went on to a bantamweight title and the latter became South American heavyweight champion, as well as a legendary challenger to Jack Dempsey.

Steve Cruz was stopped in one by Lenny Valdez in '84. Two years later, as a late substitute, he beat Barry McGuigan and won the world featherweight title.

Yes he went down but it was not a punch that did it, more exhaustion and loss of equilibrium from staggering. Quarry must have landed 30 straight punches but Shavers refused to fall. He showed an incredible capacity to endure punches. Great fight by both. Shavers lost but he was impressive in defeat.

the punch that looked like it sent Shavers into a "spiral"
looked to me like a short right hand to the temple at approx. 16:23 of the clip.
Shavers was bobbing and weaving away from most of them so maybe that is what have made him so exhausted so early it appears.

Tony Mundine was stopped in one by Luis Rodriguez. He went on to beat Emile Griffith and Denny Moyer, make multiple defenses of the Commonwealth middleweight title and win the Commonwealth and Australian light heavyweight titles, as well as the Australian heavyweight championship.

Guys like that getting taken out in the first round give real credence to that phenomenon of "getting caught cold" that you'll hear some old trainers talking about. Where they strongly suggest a guy be warmed up, and have a sweat going before he gets in the ring. If you're bone dry you're more likely to get caught like that.
Now I obviously don't KNOW that this was the case with Maxim and Moore's 1st round losses, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find out.
