I've got big hands and would agree , due to lack of injuries on my hands over the years , would probably agree big hands if there strong are probably less likely to get injuries , but NO WAY do they give you power ,,, thats down to technique but even then technique will only go so far , some guys just have a very big dig , and y its natural ..
Think every coach in the world he had lads in his gym , he's taught them the correct technique , dilevery ect ect ,, and in walks some random off the street and with no training , you look and think Jeez this kid can punch ,,, and his hand size has nothing to do with it ,,

So if it’s not fist size, what is it? Bone density? Genetics? Race? The biggest two factors are obviously size and technique but there must be some indicators.
To me it’s always just a natural solidness, lads who are built heavy all round, but not necessarily weight. There does seem to be different kinds of power, too. Snapping and thudding if I had to name it.

its a tricky one,,,,,, there are so many different cases
people say speed = power, but there are loads of fast non-punchers and many slow punchers
there are skinny punchers and squat punchers, skinny non-punchers and squat non-punchers
there are all sorts of punchers and non punchers of every race
guys with big hands who hit hard, guys with small hands who hit hard
technique clearly plays a part (e.g. arm punchees vs body full into it) but only within each boxer's own power range.

Hard to say. They were original press photos so glossy 8 x 10. Maybe they had a caption or writing on the back to date them. I have the Dempsey ones away but kept the rest. They could have been from any period really. The other photo was him in golf gear and I’d put it at 30s based on the clothes and his age.

It’s a weird one punching power for sure. Like old Maggies said you get slow punchers who hit brick hard, like Iran Barkley say and fast punchers like Loma who don’t hit so hard.
I’ve been into all sorts of training thru my life, going from a flyweight to a cruiserweight. I personally hit a lot harder when I’m lighter with less muscle than when I’ve been lifting heavy. The best my punching has felt has been when I was right into rock climbing. It’s possibly because that’s when my tendons were at their strongest.

ya , noticed loads of muscle bound guys without power tbh. although then you get a guy like aj who is bulked and can bang. so much variety in body type of who can punch and who cant

Weight and power are odd things sometimes. The podcast where McGuigan mentioned about Okolie having small hands, he was also asked about the power of the fighters he trains. He said Groves punched very hard and he had seen him knock HWs down in sparring. Frampton apparently punched much harder at 10 stone but lost the power as the weight came off. Okolie punches very hard but doesn't punch any harder at 17 stone than he does at 14 stone. Dubois was the hardest of them all.

I recall that Dempsey posed for a shot with his fists out when he was over here back then. He still looked the part and famously chinned a couple of muggers in his 70s.
