I was at my local snooker club, there were about 50 of us, still drinking come fight time. Tyson as usual came out firing but as Holyfield started to impose himself, the realisation that a massive shock was on the cards began to sink in. Just as with 6 years previously when Buster Douglas did the same thing I was still sure Tyson would pull it out of the bag. When Holy finally put that flurry of punches together to stop Tyson on his fight the place erupted. Remember they feared for Holyfield’s health before this fight, I have interviews on my HBO broadcast tape….

Holyfield boxed so sweetly that night, in my opinion (and many disagree) that was his peak Heavyweight night, the night when he retained much of his smooth fluidity but also planted his feet more to hit with much more pop. That Holyfield would have beaten the 1991 Holyfield in my opinion.

I'll never forget Holyfield's ring walk, he was singing at the top of his voice in his purple robes with the inscription on them, and he had this look in his eye's which was quite frightening. He looked like someone having 'a turn' at a baptist church, and I remember thinking 'Christ, he looks pretty up for it.'

The first round looked at first like we were going to get what we expected. Tyson came out like a bat out of Hell, and Holyfield stumbled back under the first assault. Then it was clear he wasn't hurt, and he began to box with Tyson on the inside, blocking Tyson's shots and digging back.

I think it was around the 5th-6th that it became clear Tyson was running dry, and Holyfield was growing in stature and confidence with every second, I remember having butterfly's in my stomach as he began to dismantle Tyson.

Truly a great great fight, had everything for me that a world heavyweight title should be about. Douglas fight is even better.

I recon i must have watched Benn vs Gman 100's of times, real shame how it ended but one of the best fights i have ever seen, Hamed vs ingle, Barerra, Bruno vs Mccall was a clasic.

Bruno/McCall is a good shout, but i reckon only British fans will rewatch this. What a moment though.

Does anyone else remember the solemn studio discussion with the expert boxing broadcasters sat around a table in a darkened studio talking about how worried they were for the mortal safety of Holyfield?

I took all that at face value then i felt really awful when i saw Evander singing on his way to the "gallows".

That made that epic turnaround that much more unbelieavable.

When i have a few minutes spare i like to pop in Sanders v Wlad. Not so much for the boxing but the looks on the faces of the spectators.

My favorite Naz fight is an earlier one, against Enrique Angeles. I reckon he was at his absolute peak there.
The Mexican had a decent record - one of those typical diehard Mexican warriors who's come up the hard way. The look on his face as he watches the Naz ring entrance says it all: This fool isn't going to be dancing for much longer......
Angeles comes out throwing bombs, but Naz just moves his chin a fraction, time after time, and they wizz past, then counters with precision bombs before cold cocking the Mex in round 2.
Absolutely awesome, and outside of a few legends, I don't think anyone could have beaten him that night. Untouchable.

Says a lot that Angeles went the distance with one Eric Morales 5 months later.

Aaron Pryor / Alexis Arguello 1 - Fantastic fight, with a first round even better than Hagler/Hearns.

That look on Holyfield's eyes was a kind of glazed look, reminded me of some people I've seen on E. Just singing and staring somewhere vacantly, but happy and supremely confident. He KNEW he was going to shock the world that night.

Mind you didn't help him against Lenny....

Although not a fight specifically, I do often watch Champions Forever, best sports video by a mile, IMO.

I actually think Champions forever is pretty shit. The production is awful and the interviews are pretty trite and pointless, and they've got that godawful music which plays during the clips of the fights. I remembered it being really great, then rewatched it last night and was appalled.

Yep, the best boxing film ever made ( almost wasn't either - neg was confiscated over unpaid lab bills, then somehow survived 20 odd years in a sweltering African wharehouse ).

Clay / Liston 1 - While I'm watching it, I'm still half expecting Sonny to blow Clay away in the opening round.

Picked up an old Box News the other day, preview of Ali/Liston 2 = their pick? Liston by early KO.
