Silva Rejects Paul Bet Proposal: You Don't Need A Spider Tattoo, I Know You're My Fan

Jake Paul knows that he will have his work cut out for him in the ring ahead of his next fight.

He will also have to get far more creative when it comes to another pre-fight tradition.

Paul has made a point to challenge his opponents to a side bet in the build-up to their eventual clash. He extended such an offer to his next foe, record-breaking former UFC champion Anderson ‘Spider’ Silva. The two will collide atop an October 29 Showtime Pay-Per-View event from Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona. The financial stakes are already set, though the bonus for the winner has yet to be determined as the two have yet to find common ground.

“I was gonna say, if you beat me, I’ll get a Spider tattoo,” Paul offered up during their kickoff presser Monday afternoon at NeueHouse Hollywood in Los Angeles.

A similar bet was made with former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley ahead of his first fight with Paul last August 29 in Cleveland, Ohio. Paul won by split decision, which left Woodley (0-2) on the hook to get a tattoo reading, “I Love Jake Paul”, which he had etched on the inside of his middle finger.

The same offer was respectfully rejected this time around.

“No, no, no, stop. You don’t need a Spider tattoo. I know you’re my fan,” Silva shot back, drawing a rise from the media and crowd and even a hearty laugh from Paul. “Don’t worry. I’m your fan, too. But I hate tattoos.”

Facing an opponent with whom there is no real animosity for the first time in his pro career, Paul (5-0, 4 KOs) was momentarily at a loss for words while honoring his opponent’s beliefs.

“I’ll come up with a different bet, none that doesn’t have anything to do with tattoos,” promised Paul. “We’ll come up with it during fight week.”

Paul sought additional stakes for scheduled bouts with a pair of far more contentious rivals in England’s Tommy Fury (8-0, 4 KOs) and second-generation boxer Hasim Rahman, Jr. (12-1, 6 KOs), neither of whom made it to fight night for a variety of reasons.

Woodley satisfied the terms of their bet ahead of their first fight, prompting Paul to grant him a rematch. It came as a backup plan, as Woodley replaced an injured Fury last December. Paul won via sixth-round knockout, leaving him with the honor of knocking out every opponent he’s faced after going the distance with Woodley four months prior.

One bet that Paul claims to remain unsatisfied was a seven-figure wager with UFC president Dana White ahead of his eventual knockout win over former MMA fighter Ben Askren last April in Atlanta, Georgia. Paul claims that the outspoken UFC figurehead still owes him a cool million, though is also willing to provide White with a second chance.

“Even Dana White did not think I would take this fight. Dana, I know you’re watching bro. You still owe me a million dollars from when you bet against me on Ben Askren,” noted Paul. “I want you to come out of hiding, stop being a bitch and make a bet against me—and actually pay up this time.

“You didn’t think I’d take this fight, so let’s make a bet. Let’s up up a mill, let’s put up two mill, let’s put five-mill on it. But I bet you won’t, Dana, because you’re a bitch.”

Press Release | PPV Undercard Information

Prospect Ashton “H20” Sylve and two of its newcomers, Chris Avila and Mikhail “Doctor Mike” Varshavski highlight the SHOWTIME PPV undercard on Saturday, October 29 (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT) headlined by Jake “The Problem Child” Paul vs. UFC legend Anderson “The Spider” Silva at formerly Gila River Arena in Glendale, Ariz., just outside Phoenix. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com.

Teenage sensation Sylve (7-0, 7 KOs) will increase his level of competition and put his knockout streak on the line against durable Braulio Rodriguez (20-4, 17 KOs) of the Dominican Republic in an eight-round lightweight bout contested at 133 pounds.

Avila, a disciple of UFC superstar Nate Diaz, will look to make a statement against “Dr. Mike” Varshavski, a board-certified family physician and social media influencer with nearly 23 million followers. Their four-round cruiserweight bout is contracted at 185 pounds.

The first prospect signed by MVP, Sylve of Long Beach, Calif., has stopped all his opponents in four rounds or less, demonstrating hair-trigger reflexes. The 18-year-old recently knocked out Giovanni Gutierrez in the first round of his MVP debut at lightweight in May. He fought three times in 2021 and twice thus far in 2022. A gifted amateur who turned pro at 16 with over 100 wins and 10 national titles to his credit, Sylve first rose to fame as an eight-year-old when a training video made by his father, Ivan, went viral, leading to an invite to Floyd Mayweather’s storied gym in Las Vegas.

“This is a dream come true and I’m really excited for the opportunity to put on a spectacular performance on SHOWTIME Pay-Per-View,” Sylve said. “This is my toughest opponent yet and I’ve been training hard. I’m looking forward to introducing the world to H2O on October 29th.”

Sylve is facing an experienced opponent in Rodriguez, who has scored knockouts in all but three of his wins thanks to an aggressive, swing for the fences style. When he’s lost, it has come against top-flight opposition. Rodriguez has shared the ring with lightweight contender Ryan Garcia and title challenger Christopher Diaz. He dropped a split decision to then undefeated prospect Alberto Mercado and a unanimous decision to then unbeaten Carlos Diaz, the first blemish of his career after scoring 15-straight knockouts to start his pro campaign.

“I’ve fought on big stages before and I’m going to take full advantage of this great opportunity to show fans what I’m capable of,” Rodriguez said. “I’m thankful for this chance. October 29th can’t come soon enough.”

A veteran of both the UFC and Bellator, Chris Avila (1-1 as a boxer) has made the walk for 17 professional fights and has never been stopped or hurt during his time in the cage and ring. Making his second appearance on a Jake Paul card, the 28-year-old Stockton, Calif., native is an everyday training partner of Nate Diaz, and signature member of the Nick Diaz Army. As was the case in Tampa, Fla., when Avila beat Anthony Taylor in a super middleweight boxing match last December, Diaz and more than 40 members of the Nick Diaz Army will once again be present for Avila when he takes on “Dr. Mike.” With a reputation as an aggressive fighter, Avila’s calling card overhand right landed him two first round KOs in 2021 in MMA fights, and a 3-0 combat sports record for the year.

“Hmmmm, let’s see. I am giving him a height advantage, a reach advantage and a medical degree advantage,” Avila said. “It’s whatever though. If he wants to go to boxing fantasy camp, then I’m glad to give him the lesson he wants. A real fight against a real fighter who is not here to play games or clout chase for Instagram.”

It’s a good bet Avila has never faced anyone with a bedside manner like “Dr. Mike” Varshavski. Voted “Sexiest Doctor Alive” by People Magazine, the 6-3 Varshavski will attempt to prescribe a steady diet of right hands to Avila in his pro boxing debut. A fitness nut with over 10 million subscribers to his YouTube channel, “Dr. Mike” bloodied and battered YouTube personality Ian “iDubbbz” Washburn this past May in the main event of Creator Clash to walk away with a victory in the exhibition bout. If “Dr. Mike” puts forth a similar effort on October 29, the prognosis could be grim for Avila. “Dr. Mike” donated his entire purse in May to help relief efforts in Ukraine and plans to donate his purse on October 29 to a Boys & Girls Club of NYC.

“As a practicing physician, I’ve taken an oath to ‘do no harm,’ but when those ‘exam’ gloves come off and the boxing gloves slide on, all bets are off,” Dr. Varshavski said. “With one win under my belt, I’m hungry to add more. And this pro fight with Chris Avila could be just what the doctor ordered.”

The Paul vs. Silva event is co-produced by SHOWTIME PPV and Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), a company founded by Paul and Nakisa Bidarian. Holden Boxing will be the licensed promoter of the event, and Paul and Bidarian will serve as executive producers for the event. The pay-per-view telecast is produced and distributed by SHOWTIME PPV.

Press Release | Le’Veon Bell vs. Uriah Hall

Most Valuable Promotions and SHOWTIME SPORTS today announced that former NFL star running back Le’Veon Bell and elite mixed martial arts striker Uriah Hall will face off in a professional boxing match on Saturday, October 29 as part of the SHOWTIME PPV event headlined by Jake “The Problem Child” Paul vs. UFC legend Anderson “The Spider” Silva at Desert Diamond Arena (formerly Gila River Arena) in Glendale, Ariz., just outside Phoenix.

Both Bell and Hall will make their pro boxing debuts in a four-round cruiserweight bout contracted at 195 pounds and will come face to face for the first time during a virtual press conference on Thursday, October 13 hosted by Ariel Helwani. Tickets for Paul vs. Silva are on sale now and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com.

A strong, intimidating presence with a piston-like right hand, Hall is a 38-year-old former MMA standout who made his mark in both UFC and BELLATOR as a vicious striker. Hall (17-11, 14 KOs MMA record) is tied with Silva and Thiago Silva (no relation) for the most KO/TKOs in UFC middleweight history with eight.

Born in Jamaica and raised in New York, Hall showcased his finishing skills when he knocked out Adam Cella with a spinning back kick to the head in the first round of a bout in The Ultimate Fighter series. That performance earned him comparisons to MMA legend Anderson Silva. Hall and Silva eventually met in 2020 with Hall walking away with a fourth-round TKO. He went on to beat former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman in April 2021 via first-round knockout as Weidman suffered a gruesome leg injury just 17 seconds into their bout.

Hall started his career 4-0, highlighted by a TKO victory over Edwin Aguilar at BELLATOR 11. He is currently trained by Sayif Saud at the Fortis Gym in Dallas, Texas.

“Le’Veon Bell, I hope you bring your best,” said Hall. “I know I will. Thank you to Most Valuable Promotions for the opportunity.”

A former Michigan State standout and top NFL running back for both the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets, Bell is no stranger to boxing. The Columbus, Ohio native spent the past seven years sharpening his boxing mechanics as he readied himself for the gridiron, and that fluency in a boxing ring was on display last month when he flattened legendary NFL running back Adrian Peterson with a one-punch knockout that quickly went viral. Bell and Peterson clashed in an exhibition bout that was conducted under the auspices of the California State Athletic Commission with CSAC officials.

The bout ended in the fifth round when the 6-foot-1 Bell connected on a straight right hand that put Peterson on his back and rendered him unable to continue. It was a startling display of power, not unlike Jake Paul’s one-punch knockout of Tyron Woodley last December, and it showed off Bell’s commitment and proficiency in boxing. The 30-year-old Bell has relocated to Los Angeles, where he currently trains full time at the Fortune Gym under the watchful eye of respected, no-nonsense trainer Justin Fortune, famous for his work with boxing legend Manny Pacquiao.

Known for his long strides and ability to stop on a dime and accelerate, Bell played in the NFL from 2013 to 2021, also suiting up for the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was a two-time First Team All-Pro, two-time Second Team All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler.

“As soon as Most Valuable Promotions approached me about joining the Paul-Silva pay-per-view, I told them, ‘I want in,’ and didn’t care who the opponent was,” Bell said. “Uriah Hall is going to feel my punching power and tap out like he’s getting submitted. He is not built like me.”

“Adding NFL superstar Le’Veon Bell to the card only increases this fight’s star power and to have him go head-to-head with a fighter as experienced and dangerous as Uriah Hall – it's going to be fireworks,” said Jake Paul. “Taking on this challenge is proof that Bell, like myself, is serious about professional boxing and after his knockout of Adrian Peterson, he looks like a force to be reckoned with. Hall on the other hand has already proven himself multiple times in the UFC, and we know what he is capable of. I’m keeping a close eye on this one and may even take on the winner in the future.”

“I’m just as excited to watch Hall vs. Bell as I am for Paul vs. Silva. You have a legitimate top-10 MMA striker versus a world-class athlete who has proven he has true boxing skills and knockout power,” said Nakisa Bidarian, co-founder of MVP. “This fight elevates our pay-per-view to a new level, and these guys will undoubtedly put on an unforgettable fight for the fans in the stands and those tuning in.”

International superstar and serial risk-taker Paul will face the biggest challenge of his career when he takes on UFC legend and accomplished boxer Silva in an eight-round bout at a catchweight of 187 pounds.

In undercard action, teenage sensation Ashton Sylve will put his knockout streak on the line against Braulio Rodriguez in an eight-round lightweight bout contested at 133 pounds. Chris Avila, a disciple of UFC superstar Nate Diaz, will square off against “Doctor Mike” Varshavski, a board-certified family physician and social media influencer, in a four-round cruiserweight bout contracted at 185 pounds.

Press Release | Alexandro Santiago vs. Antonio Nieves Rematch Added

Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) announced today that top 118-pound contenders and former world title challengers Alexandro “El Peque” Santiago and Antonio “Carita” Nieves will meet again in a 10-round rematch of their exciting 2016 showdown on the Jake Paul vs. Anderson Silva SHOWTIME PPV undercard on Saturday, October 29, live from Desert Diamond Arena (formerly Gila River Arena) in Glendale, Ariz., just outside Phoenix. Tickets for the event are on sale now and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com.

Nieves, who previously faced unified junior bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue, met Santiago for the first time on the SHOWTIME developmental series, SHOBOX: The New Generation in August 2016. Highly touted prospects at the time, they became top contenders in their divisions fighting to a very competitive split decision draw. Now, ranked in the top-15 in the deep bantamweight division, Santiago and Nieves look to get back into title contention with their upcoming matchup. Santiago, who was stepping up in weight and stepping in as a last-minute replacement, out-landed NABO titleholder Nieves in power punches from rounds six to 10, but the late surge was not enough for the Tijuana, Mexico native to win the contest with the bout resulting in judges’ scores of 96-94 Nieves 96-94 Santiago, 95-95.

The now 26-year-old Santiago (26-3-5, 13 KOs) also showed his potential in September 2018 when he fought former IBF 115-pound World Champion Jerwin Ancajas to a split-draw (118-110 Santiago, 116-112 Ancajas, 114-114). Santiago, who seldom breaks training camp, suffered his first defeat in eight years last November when he squared off against unbeaten bantamweight contender Gary Antonio Russell on SHOWTIME.

“This is an amazing opportunity for me. I’m thankful to my promoter Paco Damián, MVP and SHOWTIME for making it possible,” said Santiago. “It means a lot to me. Antonio Nieves is a world class fighter and I have a lot of respect for him, but we have unfinished business and this time I am not leaving it in the judges’ hands. I’m training very hard and I’m confident that after this fight we will be in line to face any of the great world champions in my division.”

Nieves (20-3-2, 11 KOs), of Cleveland, Ohio, displayed his superior boxing skills and hand speed in his last outing against previously unbeaten Filipino prospect Judy Flores earning a convincing unanimous decision victory. Known for his technical skills and ability to measure his opponents, Nieves has never shied away from top opposition. He suffered his first defeat via controversial decision at the hands of Nikolai Potapov on SHOBOX in 2017.

“Jake is from my hometown, and I plan to represent Cleveland alongside him on the world stage. This fight will steal the show: it’s Puerto Rico versus Mexico all over again,” said Nieves, whose parents are Puerto Rican. “We fought a super close fight six years ago and since then we both have had similar paths. We have both fought world-class competition, we have both fought for the world championship. We both know that a win here will catapult us back into world-title contention. We both have lost some very close decisions along the way. This fight won’t end in a decision. I’m the bigger man. I will walk him down. He won’t last 10 rounds this time. I’m not leaving this up to the judges.”

In a battle of undefeated heavyweights, Jeremiah “Dream Land” Milton (6-0, 5 KOs) will square off against Quintin Sumpter (5-0, 3 KOs) in a six-round bout in the non-televised portion of the Silva vs. Paul undercard. Milton, a former sparring partner of heavyweight titleholder Tyson Fury and contenders Luis Ortiz and Joe Joyce, and Sumpter, a former college football player, were originally scheduled to meet on August 6 on the Paul vs. Hasim Rahman Jr. undercard before the fight was canceled due to Rahman’s inability to meet the contracted weight.

The Las Vegas-based 6-foot-4 Milton turned pro in August 2020 with a devastating 75-second, first-round knockout of Dennis Vance Jr. The Tulsa, Okla., native was a 2019 U.S. Olympic Trials Silver Medalist. He will face a sizeable challenge in the six-foot, 220-pound Brooklyn born and raised Sumpter who previously played defensive end for the Northeastern State University NCAA Division II football team. Sumpter now trains out of Pittsfield, Mass. Also in action that night, will be top prospect Eliezer Silva (1-0), of Los Angeles, Calif., who made a successful pro debut against Terry Roscoe in a four-round bout last September. He will square off against Phillip “Fresh” Carmouche (2-3), of Las Vegas, in a four-round super welterweight bout.

International superstar and serial risk-taker Paul will face the biggest challenge of his career when he takes on UFC legend and accomplished boxer Silva in an eight-round bout at a catchweight of 187 pounds. In the co-main event, teenage sensation Ashton Sylve will put his knockout streak on the line against Braulio Rodriguez in an eight-round lightweight bout contested at 133 pounds. In undercard action, elite UFC striker Uriah Hall and former NFL star running back Le’Veon Bell will make their pro debuts in a four-round cruiserweight bout contracted at 195 pounds. Chris Avila, a disciple of UFC superstar Nate Diaz, will square off against “Doctor Mike” Varshavski, a board-certified family physician and social media influencer, in a four-round cruiserweight bout contracted at 185 pounds to open the pay-per-view.

Also on the PPV undercard:

UFC veteran Uriah Hall will face ex-NFL star Le’Veon Bell in both of their proper pro boxing debuts, a four-round fight with a 195 lb catchweight.

18-year-old Paul client Ashton Sylve (7-0, 7 KOs) takes on three years inactive Braulio Rodriguez (20-4, 17 KOs) in an eight-round lightweight bout.

MMA veteran Chris Avila (1-1 in boxing) faces Mikhail Varshavski, aka “Dr. Mike,” in a four-round cruiserweight bout.

Boxing fans express anger at price of Jake Paul vs Anderson Silva pay-per-view

Boxing fans in America are upset they will be asked to shell out $60 to watch Jake Paul and Anderson Silva's fight later this month.

In the UK, the fight will cost fans $20, or around £18, but fans in America are generally asked to pay considerably more given to their culture of hosting parties surrounding such events. The theory is that events such as this one happen so early in the morning or late at night that they wouldn't feasible to have large gatherings around where friends pitch in to pay the bigger price.

"That’s pricey," one fan wrote on Twitter after the price was confirmed. "Was going to buy this out of respect of Anderson but man." That fan along with a number of others noted that they are more likely to find illegal streams of the show after learning of the hefty PPV price.

"I can think of much better things to do with my 60 bucks," another wrote. "Like a tank of gas." Another added that the fight's build-up, where Paul has been much less inflammatory than his past outings, won't be enough to do the business, saying that it "needs rivalry to gain traction for a $60 fight. The respect thing won’t do."

Silva's last PPV headliner in the UFC was his 2019 bout at UFC 234 against Israel Adesanya, which set fans back $65, while his bout with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in Mexico last year cost American fans $40. Paul charged the same $60 for his rematch with Tyron Woodley last December, which reportedly struggled to 200,000 buys after the same price point did 500,000 for their first fight.

Paul has stated that he expects the fight to do in the region of 500,000 buys on pay-per-view, but could see it going as high as 700,000 if enough people get on board with the event. A fascinating if athletically weak undercard features NFL star Le'Veon Bell against knockout artist Uriah Hall and YouTube star Dr Mike facing off with former UFC fighter Chris Avila.

“I do think this will be the biggest pay-per-view [of my career],” Paul told MMA Junkie last week. “I would be happy with anywhere from 300-500,000, but I think it can get up anywhere to like 600 or 700,000, depending on how the fight week goes and the promotion and if ‘All Access’ performs well. I think this could be the biggest one for sure.”

The MMA guys are overconfident and the boxers are scared to lose. That's why 90% of the boxers won't take the MMA fights (in addition to the pay drop off being fairly steep but if a big name transitions over they'd still make good money).

Hope I'm wrong, but I have a feeling Silva will be very well compensated in his loss. Paul would be done if he loses, and no future for Silva at his age.

While i normaly agree in a 47 year old having no future in boxing.... if silva wins he has Rematch, KSI, Logan, Diaz, Mcgregor, Floyd exhibition... all as potential boxing matches. more money in the Jake paul train rolling on, but plenty of reasons for silva to want to win it.

Maybe he could also appear on Dancing with the Stars, which has about as much to do with boxing as fighting any of those people would.

De La Hoya on Paul-Silva: That's a Good Fight - Paul Will Knock Him Out

“That’s a good fight,” De La Hoya Inside Fighting. “I’m gonna go with Jake Paul. Yeah, I’m gonna go with Jake Paul, just because he seems like he’s getting into the rhythm of things. He doesn’t have too many fights. He loves boxing, is a hard worker, and has a lot of power. If he connects with Silva, he’s going to knock him out. If he touches Silva, he’s going down.”

“Everybody’s going based on what Silva did to Julio César Chávez Jr. and Tito Ortiz,” De La Hoya said. “Come on. I mean, Chávez Jr. Wasn’t even 20% of himself. Okay? Conditioning wise, physically, just wasn’t him. [Against Paul, Silva] goes down and gets knocked out.”

Even though I decided to Predict Paul winning this by a Decision, I'm actually Truly Thinking 50/50 with this one.
My Gut says Paul by decision but my mind says that Silva Could Definitely pull this one off.
Those are the Best bouts to look forward to though, imo.
I mean, with those December bouts coming up with Crawford and Fury having they're respective Tune-Ups/Stay-Busy Level Bouts, which I feel are Obviously Extremely Predictable, this Paul vs Silva bout is Extremely Unpredictable, thus making it Extremely Intriguing. :box: :geek:
