Alvarado is pretty wild and throws wide winging punches but his pressure, power and body punching are real. I think his body attack will stop Sunny from moving. The old adage "Kill the body and the head will fall" will be proven true. I've got Alvarado by 9th round stoppage.

Schaefer: I Would Rank Sunny Edwards in Top 5 Pound-For-Pound For Skill

Richard Schaefer rates Sunny Edwards as one of the top five boxers in the world for pure skill.

“His ability to slip punches is at the absolute highest level of any weight class and from a skill point of view, I would rank Sunny Edwards today, in the top five pound-for-pound. That's how good he is,” Schaefer said.

“He has the skills which and that will to win, and those qualities, combined with his confidence and his attitude, means he is a tough nut to crack.”

Edwards is unbeaten in 18 fights as a professional and wants to land a mega fight with Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez in 2023 but is under no illusions about the task directly in front of him.

Edwards said: “Alvarado was a world champion at the weight below, he has 33 KOs on his record, and he has boxed at the highest level. He’s a big punching Nicaraguan, who has had more knockouts than I’ve had fights and he is hungry for this.”

Sunny Edwards: I Just Want The Biggest and Best Fights Out There

"I relish the challenge," Edwards said. "Not only was he a world champion a few fights ago, but he moved up with the intention of fighting me. That’s good because at every other stage of my career, I have been avoided.

"Only this year, Dalakian didn’t want to fight me on the Usyk-AJ undercard, David Martinez didn’t want to fight me in Mexico and they are world champions at the weight. Ricardo Sandoval who had been next up as my mandatory, pulled out of the position the day before the mandatory got called and it looks like he would rather face two men for a world title - Jimenez and Dalakian – rather than just fight me.

"I want the competition, I don’t want easy fights, so it is good to be facing someone of his calibre."

"I took out the division’s No 1 in my first world title fight (Moruti Mthalane), then I beat my mandatory (Jayson Mama) and then my next leading contender (Muhammad Waseem). I have not been avoiding anyone, I just want the biggest and best fights out there.

Yet after Eurosport pulled out of their deal with Probellum, Edwards's promoters, his fights have flown under the radar.

"Every fight I was involved in on BT Sport generated viewers, they were very happy with me," Edwards said. "I had millions watching on Eurosport. Now I am on FITE TV, where 48 hours later, Floyd Mayweather if fighting Deji, so it is not as if it a dead platform

"My job as a professional boxer is to prepare and be ready for whoever they put in front of me. The other stuff is nothing to do with me."

Boxer Sunny Edwards describes friendship with Daniel Kinahan as a ‘sensitive topic’

Boxer Sunny Edwards – who once proudly described Daniel Kinahan as a ‘friend’ - has now claimed the cartel boss is “a sensitive topic”.

IBF flyweight champion Edwards was previously a staunch defender of Kinahan and appeared in a number of social media posts with him.

In January, the 26-year-old fighter referred to Kinahan as a “legitimate business man who I’ve been friends with for over 7 years”

As he prepares to defend his title for the third time on Friday evening in Sheffield Utilita Arena against Nicaraguan Felix Alvarado, Edwards was asked about his association with Kinahan.

Edwards, who was signed to MTK, was one of several fighters to publicly back Kinahan "as a legitimate business" last year before cutting all ties.

"Loyalty" he explained in a new interview with the BBC drove him to defend a then under-fire Kinahan.

Edwards said that building a core team you can rely on is the most difficult thing in a sport with little oversight from a global authority.

However, he queried why boxers have been singled out for their relationships with Kinahan when broadcasters and promoters were happy to do deals with him.

"I did have a relationship with Daniel, but at the time he was working in boxing. Every promoter was working with him, making fights. That's facts," he told the BBC.

"I met a lot of promoters in and around having him involved. He's no longer in boxing and now it's about focusing on the future.

"It is one of those sensitive topics and a hard spot to really answer from because you're damned if you do and damned if you don't."

Edwards was not the only fighter signed to the company that later went under in the wake of the sanctions against Kinahan. Tyson Fury, Savannah Marshall, Josh Taylor and Billy Joe Saunders were all associated with MTK at times in their careers, although none of them have any connection with crime.

Edwards believes more "transparency and accountability" is needed, but believes unless it is applied "top to bottom" the problems will never go away.

He also suggested boxers need more impartial support, even a union, to help them navigate a landscape that is "stacked against" them.
