Everyone knows Ryder was robbed against Callum Smith. Callum went in as a punch bag vs Canelo and just stood there allowing Canelo to use him as a heavy bag. I don't give Ryder much chance but he is a southpaw and will work hard in there. He won't just stand there being a punch bag, he will constantly be trying.

That's mostly because of Canelo's tactics.

He targeted Cal's arms, and by mid rounds, Cal couldn't even lift his arms to throw a punch.

I just don't think he's got mainstream recognition over here. I was genuinely surprised when I went to Alvarez vs Khan in Vegas and it wasn't a sell-out - he's gone up another level since then, but he's not in that 'bigger than the sport' category that would be needed here, especially given Ryder himself is very low profile. In short, Canelo is no Mayweather and Ryder is no Hatton.

Canelo isn’t a once in a lifetime superstar in the U.K. He’s a big draw in Mexico and a good draw in the US.

People are being far more choosy with their money now. Spending £150 on a potential Canelo/Ryder fight isn’t an easy sell and there aren’t enough hardcore fans in the U.K. who’d just want to see Canelo in the flesh.

Canelo Alvarez 'Very Likely' To Face John Ryder In May, Hearn Says

Canelo Alvarez’s future is becoming clearer with each passing day.

Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn has stated that the undisputed super middleweight champion Alvarez is "very likely" to next face John Ryder in May in either the United States, United Kingdom, or Mexico, and that discussions have already begun for the potential fight with Alvarez manager and trainer Eddy Reynoso.

Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) is currently recovering from left wrist surgery. Last month, Alvarez said therapy was going well and that he wanted a “tuneup fight” before facing Dmitry Bivol in a September 20203 rematch with hopes of avenging his second career defeat.

Ryder (32-5, 18 KOs) is a British-based boxer who’s enjoyed a bounceback year in 2022, beating Daniel Jacobs via split decision in February and Zach Parker via fifth-round TKO in November.

By beating Parker – who was forced to retire in the fight due to a broken right hand – Ryder claimed the interim WBO super middleweight title and became the WBO mandatory challenger for Alvarez’s title.

The 34-year-old Ryder has lost to the likes of Callum Smith, Rocky Fielding, and Billy Joe Saunders – opponents Alvarez has beaten.

“Thankfully, the opportunity arose for John Ryder. He’s had a great year,” said Hearn, who promotes Ryder. “If Canelo Alvarez is looking for that interim WBO fight, I’d love to bring Canelo Alvarez to the UK. It would be huge for British boxing. I think he’d love it as well, and I think John Ryder is deserving of that opportunity after the year he’s had and the wins he’s had. So hopefully, we can make that happen.

“Emirates is a fantastic stadium [for Canelo vs. Ryder]. Wembley, of course, is the home of the big fights. Any big stadium and the British fight fans would love to see Canelo Alvarez in the UK. We could do something really special.This could be our chance to bring Canelo to the UK. It would be unbelievable. We’ll see if we can get it over the line.”

Reynoso is open to the matchup.

“Ryder is coming off a good streak and has had some good fights. We’ll be ready for that fight,” Reynoso told iD Boxing. “It’s an interesting fight, a guy that comes forward and is aggressive. He’s been winning a lot of fights, and it’ll be an interesting fight.”

Ryder is looking forward to the opportunity for fight Alvarez as well.

“It would be massive. He’s a global superstar, and to get him to my hometown would be amazing,” Ryder told iD Boxing. “I’d go to Guadalajara or Acapulco to fight him. Yeah, if it could be made, I’d fight him wherever. To be a potential world champion, but that obviously comes with it. It’s one of those things. If Canelo vacates, I’ll be a world champion, but I don’t want to be a world champion by being upgraded. I want to fight him. I want to fight a good champion and go out and make a statement and get all the marbles."

Cue fight at altitude and Ryder throws no punches.

Canelo Alvarez Vs. John Ryder In Negotiations For May, Possibly In UK

Eddie Hearn has confirmed that negotiations are underway for Canelo Alvarez to defend his undisputed super middleweight championship against Hearn-promoted John Ryder in May, possibly in England, Mexico, the U.S., or the Middle East.

Bringing Canelo (58-2-2, 39 KOs) to the UK appears to be Hearn’s first choice for the Mexican star, as he would be facing the British fighter Ryder (32-5, 18 KOs) in a large stadium in London.

Ryder, nicknamed ‘The Gorilla,’ mentioned the 60,000-seat Emirates Stadium as a potential destination for his fight with the superstar Canelo. That’s an outdoor stadium.

Although Hearn says Canelo has other options besides the 34-year-old Ryder as his next opponent for May, considering that he’s coming off of left wrist surgery, this would be the safest choice. Ryder isn’t much of a puncher, making it an easier fight for Canelo on paper than if he were to take a more dangerous foe like David Morrell, the re-tooled Caleb Plant, David Benavidez, or Jermall Charlo.

American boxing fans prefer Canelo to fight one of the above fighters rather than Ryder, but Hearn is very persuasive and has the Mexican star’s ear, letting him know that ‘The Gorilla’ would be an excellent choice for many reasons.

Canelo wanting to expand his appeal to the UK markets makes Ryder a good option. Of course, some would argue that if Canelo is going to be fighting a British boxer, he should select Chris Eubank Jr.

“Yeah, that’s the plan. I’ve been speaking to Eddie Reynoso and the team over the last couple of days; we’re negotiating that fight at the moment,” said Eddie Hearn to the DAZN Boxing Show when asked if Canelo Alvarez will fight John Ryder in May.

“Obviously, Canelo’s got options, it doesn’t have to be John Ryder, but he is the mandatory. We’re trying to agree on a deal with Canelo Alvarez, and we’re trying to agree to a deal with John Ryder as well.

“We’d like to see that fight internationally, something a little bit different for Saul, and hopefully, we can conclude a deal for that in the coming weeks.”

“UK, Middle East, even the U.S, Mexico,” said Hearn when asked where the Canelo vs. Ryder fight will be staged. “Saul can fight anywhere, but it’s always been a plan of mine to take him around the world, and I’d love to be a part of it.”

One fight that seems to be on the cards is Canelo Alvarez vs John Ryder. The World Boxing Council offered a positive update on the fight recently.

“Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing assures that the talks between “Canelo” and Brit John Ryder are well advanced,” they said. “The venue for the fight where Canelo will defend his titles has not yet been defined.

“According to Hearn, it is doubtful that the Mexican and the Briton will face each other in the United States, so there are three options.

“The first is Great Britain, a market that “Canelo” has wanted to enter for a long time. That would be very good for him.

“The second possibility is Mexico, with Guadalajara as the main venue. Canelo has expressed that Akron Stadium is an excellent place to hold a fight.

“The latest is the Middle East, with places like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. More and more boxing is taking place there."

Canelo underwent wrist surgery last year, from which he has recovered well.

I don’t think peole are fair to Callum against Canelo, he only had one arm after round 2
