Guys like Bennie Briscoe and Jose Medel really stand out to me. They fought everyone, fought in different cities and countries, scored some great wins but their chances at the world title came against great champions. Today's fighters would cry if they were told that's the route they have to go.

This is the problem with the sport now, most fighters don't want to lose their unbeaten record, or risk a title shot, so they want the cards stacked in the favour when they fight. You hear of newly turned pros wanting 8 week training camps for fights.

Yeah, there's no need to go on the road, take a tough fight etc; when you have a promoter who'll maneuver you into the shot at a trinket and then you can carefully protect the "0."

Archie Moore is probably the answer to this. However a more fun out of the box pick would be Joe Grimm.

He faced:

Dave Holly
Jack O'Brian
Peter Maher
Barbados Joe Walcott
Bob Fitzsimmons
Joe Gans
Jack Blackburn
Jack Johnson
Sam McVea

Funny I mentioned Briscoe earlier, but now I think Ali:

Liston x2
Foreman
Frazier x3
Norton x3
Quarry x2
Lyle
Shavers
et al...

Patterson X2 as well; even has Bob Foster as a name too and although it would be easy to dismiss Foster as a light-heavy, he was quite a formidable one and if memory serves me, he is the only man ever to cut Ali.

Quite some opposition for anybody to have to face.
