Well, despite your detailed and extensive analysis supporting your side of the argument I fear you have afailed to change my mind. What I do know about you however, is that most people on this board seem to disagree with you and your opinions most of the time, so I wont worry too much about your lucid and thought provoking response.

Joe has fought a few good fighters and never lost, Your beloved Witter has fought two and lost once.

HAW! Most people on this board that agree with you are nut hugger’s and the reason their pissed is Calzone’s got no balls to hug. :D

Lirva serves a good purpose on this board because he the only Brit that keeps U honest. :o
An opposite point of view is always healthy, otherwise U would all be sitting around wringing your hands with “Aint it awful?” stories.
Does anybody in their right mind believe the WBO mandatory charade?
The correct formula is Sports network + Universum = WBO (World Bums Organization) :TU:

BTW, Witter has faced THREE the top 10 rated fighters, Judah, Bergman & Ndou.
How many has Hatton faced?
(Please don’t keep bringing up washed up Tackie & Phillips as neither was in the top 10 ratings.) :-?
Bergman was not top 10 at the time as I recall, and it was a SIX ROUNDER!

Bergman was definitely in the top 10 at the time.

True, but then we'll have had Mkrtchian, Salem, Magee, Veit in a row that is a crock of shit for a supposed 'number 1' in the division. Sorry guys but as we rate divisions on accomplishment and not potential he'll have to lose that #1 spot by default soon if this charade continues.

In fact since he last fought Veit...

McIntyre
Brewer
Jimenez
Pudwill
Mitchell
Mkrthcian
Salem
(to follow)
Magee

Only two of those, Brewer and Mitchell are acceptable matches the rest are a joke.

I'm not about to argue that Witter has shown more ambition than Calzaghe.

Calzaghe is content with making a packet from soft defences, he's not interested in really taking hard, risky, meaningful fights to establish himself as a genuine big three belt holder.

Calzaghe has been saying for as long as I can remember now how hard he makes it to make weight, but has shown no real inclination to move up in weight. The WBO belt is obviously the most important thing to him.

Compare that to Glen Johnson, who hasn't made anything like the money Joe has, but he gladly dropped the belts to fight Tarver in a big unification fight, knowing that if he won big paydays would follow.

Same goes for Judah, taking on Spinks for a pathetic purse, gambling and winning on being champ and making dollars.

As far as I am aware, Calzaghe has never been willing to take the short end of the purse in order to get the big opportunity.

Posted: 10 Mar 2005, 09:14
by josh fg
He alwaysed used the purse as an excuse not to fight Ottke which in my view he was a fool to do, he should have won that fight and had he then he would be recognised as a unified world champion. At least Witter will take fights he can loose (judah in his 17th etc)

It never ceases to amaze me how people like Blue come on here and call us all nuthuggers.

Lirva is critical of British fighters to an extent which borders on hatred, very strange.

Any nuthuggers on here tend to get shot down in flames pretty quickly...

lirva just wants to go against what he perceives to be the majority. If Junior Witter becomes a legit champion you watch lirva turn against him.

Also, whose top 10 rankings are you referring to, the ludicrous sanctioning bodies' ones? Hohoh! Yes, we all know just how fair and honest their rankings are. Although the manner of his win over N'dou was largely impressive, nothing N'dou has done in his career previously suggested he was any threat at world level, he's one of those game losers who will end up like Tackie as a tough nut stepping stone.

no come on james, tackie was shot to bits lets face it, he was fighting bums before hatton, oh hang on a minute who did he fight before Ricky, the very fight before erm erm erm
Kostya thats who. course he was top ten completely and utterly laughable to say otherwise.

I have to say fighters of this 'Sky generation' are partly to blame for the current state of the British game. Allegedly gets most of the blame if you ask me, he's the one putting on the mismatches but its a lack of ambition from his fighters that allows him to do so. Full credit to Hatton for finally stepping up, although it should have happened a lot sooner its good to see he has some balls. Calzaghe on the other hand is a waste of oxygen. I doubt we'll ever see Sicknote in his 'defining' fight.

Bergman was not top 10 at the time as I recall,

Bergman was rated 7th in the IBF and went on to fight Judah for Vacant IBF Light Welterweight Title.

and it was a SIX ROUNDER!

4, 6, 8, 10, whatever, a win is a WIN!
It was Witter’s defining fight that led the IBF to accept him as a substitute opponent for the Judah title fight.
It was a win over a ranked contender.
Would U please post Ricky Hatton’s defining win over a RANKED contender?
(Political snow jobs like Michael “Big Joke” Stewart don’t count as he has no defining fight either.)

I think Lirva is just disenchanted by the ruse Mr. Allegedly has been feeding the British fans and is for the underdog.
Witter doesn’t really get much fair play on this Forum.
Maybe U could post some of these “shot down in flames”. They would be fun to read. (Translation: Prove it!) :D

I agree with U, :TU: it IS funny how fans tend to credit them when they are talking about their favorite fighters and then discredit them when it’s convenient to slag other fighters.
I know the rankings are nothing but a publicist tool to shape the minds of the lazy ass fans and allowed unproven fighters to bypass local & regional titles to qualify for a title fight. A good example is how the WBU & WBO have diminished the British & EBU titles in your area.

Although the manner of his win over N'dou was largely impressive, nothing N'dou has done in his career previously suggested he was any threat at world level, he's one of those game losers who will end up like Tackie as a tough nut stepping stone.

Agree; :TU: Fans tend to ignore N'dou’s losses to headliner journeymen like Quinonez, Juarez, and Mosquera, all who are good 2nd level fighters, but nothing more. I have been making the same point about Tackie on this forum for years. The objective way to get on top level is to beat a top level fighter which neither N'dou nor Tackie have accomplished.
BTW, Phillips & Tackie were not in anybody’s top ten when they faced Hatton, I pointed this out on this very Forum at the time.

i'm not about to go through all my posts Blue, but I'm sure you will find many examples of people coming on here trumpeting about Scott Harrison, saying he will

I agree that Hatton has never beaten a top 10 contender, but all I am trying to say, is be objective about his career, and Witters.

Neither man has proven they can beat a genuine world level thret, I have Witter ahead by virtue of his win over N'dou, as I feel N'dou had slightly, though only slightly more to offer than Tackie did.

No way would I have rated Ndou in my top 10, top 20 maybe, but top 10, no way. Tackie was harder to rank, as his losses generally came against world class fighters, but his inactivity made it hard to be truly obective about.

stewart was ranked, like it or not, I'm not saying he deserved that ranking, because i don't think for a minute he should have been anyone's #1 contender on the basis of losing by a country mile to stewart. however, did Bergman deserve his ranking?

Saying that lirva is the only one who 'keeps us honest' implies that the rest of us are deluded, which is utter balls.

I am more than capable of discerning wheat from chaff, and I'm under no illusions about the greatness of our fighters. I still rate Calzaghe as probably the best, but he will get overtaken for me by the winner of Green v Beyer, his level of activity and quality of opposition has dropped too far.

Harrison, well, he's a top 10 fighter, but we've seen his limitations now, and it seems very unlikely he could ever beat any of the real elite fighters in the division.

Hatton, again top 10, just how good is hard to tell, and even fighting Tszyu may not give a guage, even if he gets destroyed by Tszyu, which i don't think he will, plenty of other top fighters have had that honour before him.

Witter, again, top 10, like Judah, he eats mediocre fighters for breakfast, and is capable of doing a number on a top 20 guy like N'dou, but we just don't know how he would fare against Gatti, Cotto, etc, he's not fought anyone that class yet. He definetly has world class power though, there's no doubt about that.

Woods, top 10 fighter, maybe top 5, or even better, maybe he has some more big performances left in him, he was good enough to run Johnson close, which is a good indicator, and he wiped the floor with hoye.

Johnny Nelson is the forgotten man, the guy who is on a given night possibly good enough to beat anyone in the division, but it's unlikely we will ever find out.

So please, don't imply that Lirva is somehow our conscience. He's not the only one dissillusioned with boxing in this country, but constantly slating what amount to our premier fighters doesn't amount to much.
