He has to be up there. I don't necessarily think the argument that he hasn't knocked out anyone great to be rated higher, his right hand would trouble anyone it landed on. Lots of big punchers didn't have big name victims but that doesn't mean they can't punch hard. Fury rates Klitschko as hitting harder which seems odd as he hardly landed a decent punch on him.

Maybe it doesn't have to be someone great, but it helps if some stops some that at least pretty good. There are a lot of guys with great ko numbers but when they stepped against better competition couldn't do it. Mac Foster and Alex Stewart for example.

Yeah of course but sometimes that’s down to other things like overall boxing ability, fitness, speed, desire, stamina etc. Bruno never knocked out anyone decent but he had power, he was just fairly limited and quite slow. His lack of speed meant he didn’t land too many big punches in combination so his opponents could tie him up and recover. Quite a few opponents of Mike Tyson rated others as hitting harder with single punches but it was Tyson’s speed, two handed power, aggression and combinations that made him more effective and dangerous.

I think the two have a different type of power. Klitschko may have that horrible thudding type power where you feel it through your whole body whenever he connect or even a shot is block, while Wilder is certainly more explosive and might not feel 'as strong' when he hits you.

Wilder's one-shot finish of Ortiz in the rematch was one of the best I've ever seen.

Someone’s chin doesn’t get better just because they are a better fighter than someone else. You can be a journeyman and take a punch better than an ATG. Same with power, you can be unskilled but punch hard or highly skilled without power. The proof is there with Wilder, he ends many fights with one punch and not many guys can do that.

On average, the better has the better chin. But yes of course the lesser fighter could have a better chin.
Agree with your comment about power, you can be unskilled but punch hard. Wilder is a perfect example. He is very unskilled but has a lot of power. He did score some big one punch knockouts.

But we really don't know just how "powerful" he really was. It's entirely possible that if he was up against someone with a good chin, the guy would have walked through it. There just isn't enough evidence either way. Which is often the problem with heavyweights in recent times (regarding not just power, but chin, and all sorts of things) because they are all tested so rarely.

I don't agree a better fighter on average has a better chin. What often separates them is they have better fitness, reflexes and/or boxing ability so they either recover better, don't get hit as much or have the ability to ride it out when they are hurt compared to your average journeyman. Nigel Benn is a good example, in his early career when he was more wild he got wobbled, dropped and hurt on several occasions. When he started slowing down and boxing more he didn't look as vulnerable. Nothing to do with his chin improving, he just boxed smarter and didn’t walk onto punches so much. When fighters are past it they normally get stopped more as they just don't have the reflexes they once had. Amir Khan didn't have a great chin but he had other skillsets that separated him from your average fighter. Do we really know how great a chin Mayweather had because he rarely took a full blown punch to test it out.

You really don't believe that on average, the better fighter doesn't have a better chin?
I certainly do. for one thing, a fighter can to some degree improve his ability to take a punch. If a fighter progresses, he starts to fight opponents who hit harder. He starts to get used to it. A punch that may have rock a guy in his early years as a pro might not later on.
Also, sometimes a key reason why a fighter is good is because he has a good chin. (Obviously chin alone isn't going to be enough)

A top fighter is expected to have a good chin. If he doesn't, he probably isn't going to be a top fighter.
Obviously, there are exceptions to all of this.

The standard for having a good chin is simply higher than for an ordinary fighter. Nigel Benn didn't have a good chin for a fighter of his ability. However, he certainly had a better chin than the average guy. His chin is just naturally going to compared to other top fighters.

No I don't, your ability to take a punch doesn't improve just because you can box better than someone else. Of course some guys take a punch better than others, in the same way some guys hit harder than others but that isn't linked to how good they are.

I agree.

Not to say having a good chin can't take you far, but if you don't have all the other qualities to go with it you're not going to be good or great. Chuvalo and Cobb for instance had excellent chins but that was more tied in to their conditioning as athletes more than anything else. I think that's why a lot of old time fighters trained like manual labor, or incorporated manual labor, because it toughened up the body.

So the average Hall of Famer doesn't have a better chin than the average fighter? Really?

So will and some won't. I'm sure you can give examples of fighters in the IBHOF that weren't known for having granite chins. What separates the average from the great is a lot of factors, ability, fitness, determination, mental strength, desire and will to win. Plus of course the very top guys often have access to better training, diet, better trainers, being able to dedicate themselves to the sport full time and not fit it in around a job etc etc. All these thing improve a fighter and give them an edge, plus in some cases access to banned substances!

He might well be, he's certainly up there - But as others have said, it doesn't mean a hell of a lot...,

Single one-shot explosive power when perfectly lined up is great, but it's only one small part of the whole boxing package. Otherwise those Karate guys that break blocks - who demonstrate incredible one-shot power - would all be celebrated Boxing World Champs..,
but they aren't !

He has never knocked out a durable fighter. Arthur Szpilka made him to live and death, Argue Szpilka gets done in 20 seconds in Foremands old him of the month tour, Wilder goes life and death

Name me a heavyweight in the last 30 years with a worse chin than undefeated Szpilka

Wilder can struggle in fights because he doesn’t have great boxing ability, his power is what wins him fights and ultimately he KO’d Szpilka with one punch. Apart from Fury who hasn’t he stopped? He’s only won one fight on points against Stiverne and stopped him in the 1st in the rematch. You can argue another ref would’ve stopped Fury in that first fight too while he was laid out.

why would they have stopped it? without a count? he was on his feet at 9.

both of wilder's stoppages vs. ortiz were prime examples of atrocious corruption with everybody in on the farcical bias for the a side. officials, doctor, judges and the ref who physically was blocking ortiz from getting back up and waiving it off without a count.

Because Fury looked like he was out for the count. Not all refs would’ve counted, some would’ve waved it off.

i agree that not stopping top fighters doesnt necessarily mean someone isnt the top puncher, but the beauty of actually stopping top fighters is that it cant then be held against you that you didnt
