It wasn't really out of nowhere, Muhammad caught Martin about 20 seconds into the 11th round, Martin lurched forward with his hands down and on shaky legs so the ref jumped in. Not a bad stoppage really.

Wow. 99% of the time in that situation the fight doesn't get stopped.

it wasnt really out of nowhere since martin was hurt and shaky in the last 30 seconds of the 10th and looking very weary. he was obviously hurt in the 11th there too as he froze, stumbled forward, and seemed unable to hold his gloves up. that said i think a lot of refs, in a back and forth slug fest like that, would've let it go on longer before jumping in

pretty sure saad would've stopped him anyway though, he was a worn down and exhausted fighter

Saad was just as tired if not more. (He looked hurt earlier in the fight himself.) Who knows if Saad would have had the energy to finish him off. Martin could have clinched and that would been it. We have all seen countless fights where a guy gets hurt like that and survives.
At the time everyone was shocked when that fight was stopped.

unless a dude is literally ktfo and cant get up, you can always say 'who knows what woulda happened' if they let it go on, since we never got to see it. doesnt mean the stoppage isnt legit

in this case, i think it was boaderline, but martin was clearly not in a good condition and i doubt it changed the result, the long hard fight had got to him and saad was gonna take him out

On watching it I didn’t think it was a poor stoppage as Martin looked hurt and on wobbly legs, I’ve seen worse.

He got hurt and the ref stopped it immediately. This wasn't a controversial stoppage. This was a fight that almost everyone thought should not have been stopped. Sometimes (actually most of the time) when a guy gets hurt, he survives. Imagine all the great fights that would not have happened if they were stopped this easily.

There have been at least hundreds of fights where a guy in that situation came back to win.

ya everyone thought it was just the craziest stoppage ever
Martin walked into that right hand and was literally out on his feet, his hands were down at his sides and totally defenseless. Hazzard realized immediately that there was no way that Martin could protect himself and stepped in.
Muhammad whiffed on a couple of follow ups, but you could see him loading up when he saw Martin was helpless. The next punch would have knocked him out or worse.
Good stoppage
This could've gotten ugly if Saad was aloud to continue to tee off. Eventually a bomb would've landed and it may have been a hospital visit turned into a morgue stay.
Martin was hurt badly and doing a zombie walk with his hands down. I think Saad would've gotten him out of there that round anyway.
Can't say I disagree with the stoppage here. Martin was helpless and a walking target after that Muhammad right. He literally didn't know where he was and could barely control his body. Hazzard save him from some serious damage.
THE REF DID THE RIGHT THING BY STOPPING THE FIGHT. JERRY DROPPED HIS HANDS AND MATHEW COULD HAVE KILLED HIM.
Can’t complain about that , he was out on his feet, about to taken out bigtime
Martin should be thanking the ref...with saad muhammad's power he could have been injured seriously???!!!
That was a good stop by lh is arms was down he would have gotten hurt real bad good stop larry

Richard Steele in Razor Ruddock vs Tyson 1
Although Tyson was probably going to finish him off.

Initially it seemed like a premature stoppage, but looking at the replay it's clear that Martin was gone. There's no way he survives that, Hazzard saved him from getting knocked out cold.

The referees really have a tough job don’t they? 99% of modern referees would’ve waved the first Fury-Wilder fight off as soon as Fury’s head hit the canvas, and I don’t think a lot of people would have blamed the ref if he did because it looked for the first couple seconds like a genuine lights-out knockout, but he gave a full 10 count and that changed history and lead to a great trilogy.

Where do you start with this one?

Probably should be the biggest thread on the entire forum.

Confused here...

The ref got it right in Fury-Wilder I. The judges got it wrong.

If you say well he could have stopped it then the ref effects almost every single fight.

Fury got a long count didn't he?

mike mccallum vs herol graham

graham gets a very harsh point deduction.

the point off cost him a draw (and a rematch). :brick:
