Bowe said the hardest anyone hit him was Herbie. Good movement and sledgehammer in his hands. He was never the same after the Bowe fight, but Michael Bentt was a very good win. I'd pick him over Chisora and Whyte.
Really perplexing, it seemed like it anything, Hide made contact with Bowe's chin with his forehead, couldn't see a punch landed there at all.

I'll admit I'd never seen that, really enjoyed watching it though. Hide was brave, looked so much lighter than Bowe, kept getting up though, looked just shattered by the end.

Herbie and I went to the same boarding school, but not at the same time.
The other famous 'old boy' (besides Herbie) was Tony Martin, The farmer who shot the burglar in the back.
Anyone know what my school was called?

Years ago they did fantasy matchups in Boxing News for the best British heavies. In Haye v Hide they had Haye winning it by stoppage on the grounds he had the higher ring IQ. It makes sense.

You are correct my friend. Glebe House School for boys (as was) in Hunstanton in Norfolk. Some summers I can still be seen smashing 6's at the annual Headmasters XI v Old boys cricket match. I was at Glebe 1972-1975

Awesome. Was it a fee-paying provision? Just interested in how Hide came to go there. Such an interesting journey when a dude comes from a broad as a youth and builds a life over here. I am someone who has never travelled much so always find it particularly interesting. I am endlessly annoying our bid manager at work who is Sri Lankan and ended up living in Yorkshire, she humours me like one would humour a well meaning yappy Westie.

Herbie was adopted, that's why he ended up in England, in Norwich, and in a nice school. All these advantages were wasted on him, being that he's pig sh*t thick, a criminal and a self destructive thug.
The last time I saw him he was crying -- literally crying -- on BBC News that he was getting in trouble because he didn't have people to look after him like he did when he was boxing, a 50 year old man with children.

If he’d switched to cruiserweight after the Klitschko debacle, there could have been some interesting British match ups instead of the bad heavyweight loses and fade out in Germany. He could have got Nelson, Thompson and a young Haye. Not totally convinced he’d have won all those but it would have been more interesting. Did his son, Henry Hide stop fighting?

You can go to a good school but lets be honest, I wouldn't say it was easy being black in Norwich at those times which is probably why he got into boxing. Nobody would have been giving him stick once he established his reputation as a fighter. He seemed decent when he was coming through and his little brother was always there enjoying the night. I think that little brother dying would have had a big impact on Herbie. Herbie always seemed a bit emotionally fragile to me. From there the money and fame came and there were plenty of highs and also Herbies non existent chin made for some crushing lows. I just remember Herbie around the time of the Tucker fight and he seemed like a decent bloke. Not someone you'd want any hassle with. Audley riled him up which brought out the bad side of Herbie and Danny Williams was also winding him up a bit.

Lot of assumptions there, based on nothing. I would argue it wasn't easy on Norwich having Herbie Hide around, given his long history of thuggish behaviour. Akinwande couldn't stand him in the ams and even as a young pro he was fond of hitting overmatched opponents when they were down and bullying sparring partners. He even kicked off with that old SRT commentator for him making a mild criticism of Herbie. Just a nutcase who was always out of control. Why you want to excuse his behaviour is beyond me.

Fair enough, my knowledge is surface level. I know he was a pr*ck in sparring overmatched opponents. I suppose I am guilty of being too forgiving and positive but I always like to see the good in people. Coming across like a nutcase could have been his defence mechanism.

Naturally talented but on the spectrum of intelligent trainers probably you’d have say Carl Froch with his training diaries etc at the good end and Hide firmly at the bad end. For Vitali didn’t FW walk out of the Hide training camp in despair as it was basically sparring partners lining up to fight full-pelt at Hide with no strategy or skill. I think he knocked Terry Dunstan down but got knocked out by someone else. Danny Williams maybe? Against Bowe he seemed to be complaining of having some sort of nervous breakdown. Not able to run around a lap of a 400 metre running track without feeling exhausted. Bar the cruiserweight stuff he only really was well matched with Bent. Bowe and Vitali obviously far too good. Morrison would have been fun.

Herbie was adopted by a family in Norfolk, The family had money hence Herbie ending up at a Hunstanton boarding school. Herbie was 6ft3 aged 13 (ive seen him on the school pics) so despite being very limited academically he didnt get any hassle. He excelled at sport at the school because of his physique, other pubeless boys of the same age would not dare take the piss out of his stutters and mumbles. Herbies physical size protected him at the school. In those days the amount of black children in norfolk was very limited so big Herbie stood out like a sore thumb.
Herbie found a love for boxing at the school, the boxing ring is in the centre of the school gym, an old faschioned dark wooden floored gym with wall bars down one side, the same ring that i had had some fights in as a school boy. Im hanging onto that claim to fame.
