A recent revelation is the Pressreader app. You need to join your local library, then you can sign in to the app with your library card number and read loads of newspapers and magazines, including Boxing News, for free

I’m not sure Doug ever got paid big money for MaxBoxing. He set it up with Gary Randall and Steve Kim after houseofboxing had its financial support withdrawn.
It was a speculative play that I’m not sure led to big financial rewards. It did, however, open up his career path.

Yep, have been subscribing one way or another since the mid 80's. Matt Christie is doing a great job, the last few years it really picked up again.

Another ex-subscriber here too .. and another with boxes of old issues in garage from late 80's to early 2000.
Is there any market to sell them .. or give them away?
Real hoarder feeling each time I find a new spot for them.

there's people flogging collections from £35 - £50 on ebay.

just read it. Well written. His sister is a bloody angel, pure love and care. It is not a super sad article either, makes you feel happy he has such love in his life.
I liked the article with Mayer too, no self pity about decisions, great attitude.

Yes, Mayer seemed admirable in attitude to boxing but it was quite poorly written and all the talk in it of her being a good example, especially to young girls, is undermined with the only fans advertising on her top in the photo.

Whitwam who wrote it is a genuinely good writer. She has written a boxing novel based in England that is worth reading. I thought it was a good article. Agree re the OF stuff though.

I couldn't work out who was talking in it half the time, the author or the subject, and had to keep going back. I wish the only fans angle was addressed as surely its the opposite of inspirational for young girls. Thought we were pushing stem etc.
But that McClellan piece was brilliant. The way it ended was very powerful, great writing.

I used to subscribe from 2001 to couple of years ago, but found the cost v content wasn't right for me, and fight reports were available quicker elsewhere

In the 90's it was the only place possible to find most results, and a week after they happened was fast!
Oh how times have changed.
It was the must read, loved it's size and paper too

I think it's evolved well though, there's a lot more features in it now after it absorbed BMs work (wish John Exshaws book reviews were revived though).
During covid it was arguably the best it's ever been with zero boxing taking place. The way they went through the archives and rustled up so many brilliant stories just showed how valuable it is to the sport.

The first Boxing News copy I bought in WH Smiths was 65p !
I would actually get a tingle of excitement buying it
For years I would read it cover to cover. It was an amazing source of information, a true trade publication.

that is ace, 65p! When was that? I remember it being £1-something in 1998 when I bought it / stole it from the newsagents I worked at.

Haha I can't even remember it was that long ago !
As everyone around at that time will remember the daily newspapers covered boxing in far more detail, but Boxing News set itself apart with comprehensive coverage from around Britain and the world.
