In 1959 my dad boxed for the lyn as a light heavyweight ray shiel matchmaker said Pete your fellas not turned up fancy fighting that bloke over there he a heavyweight smoking a pipe well they had a punch up for 3 rounds both hitting the deck nobbins was thrown in turns out my dad was first person to go distance with him as he had knocked out his last 29 opponents and had just been to the olympics don’t know who his name was Never trusted the matchmaker again aparantly it was in the evening standard

Um……. A heavyweight who’d ‘just been to the Olympics’ but ‘don’t know his name’…….(so assumedly British in the 1956 Olympics) with 29 kos in a row….. I’ll take things that never happened for $500 Alex……

EDIT - Britain didnt even send a heavy or light heavyweight in 1956… heaviest was Ron Redrup who was a middle and whilst he did box as high as heavy but not in 1958. And certainly didn’t have 29kos in a row

olij999, Yes. The MC announced to everyone in attendance that because they were amateur boxers (or that it was an amateur contest) the participants were not allowed to receive the money and it would go to charity.

I've literally seen hundreds, if not thousands, of amateur bouts and I have never seen another amateur bout where nobbins were thrown into the ring.
