Good call on Scrap Iron.

Smith, remember him in the 90s had his hair tied up and was beaten by Derek Roche in a title fight, I have a few Smith fights in my collection.

After boxing smith put on a fair bit of beef. Got time for beating up and old man if I remember correctly. Don't know the circumstances but beating up a old fella isn't good.

me too, very good boxer and despite being heavy was always boxing fit

the chap he assaulted was barred from the pub and was a local nuisance, does not excuse it at all but a little bit more than a random beating. Smith has LOTS of convictions for violence and other things though, my father knew him and he wasn't the nicest chap especially in drink. Good boxer though. I don't think we need to not include a boxer in fave lists for their out of ring activities, he WAS a good boxer, whether he was a good person is another matter.

I think that depends on what a particular fighter has done outside the ring, or how great they were in it.

For example, take someone like James Butler, who was a more accomplished fighter than many, but is absolute scum of the Earth; how many fans could look past his character when appraising him?

Sometimes fans look past a fighter's character, like in the instance of Mike Tyson, but I think he gets a pass because of his greatness in the ring. Had he been a lesser fighter, he'd hardly be anybody favourite.

I think you made an extremely valid point there, I am very happy to qualify for earlier post - I think you're right mate. My statement was somewhat sweeping.

If by domestic we mean anyone who didn't win a world title, per the OP, then Kirkland Laing is my favourite. Related to that, although I never saw them fight live as they were a bit before my time, Achille Speedy Mitchell and Billy Waith were both great technicians who were prepared to fight anyone, home or abroad. Achille never got a British title shot, whereas Waith eventually did at welter (having fought in British title eliminators at four weights - feather, light, light-welter and welter - which must be some kind of record).

Smith was a raver and got into the e side of things and it went a bit South for him. It remember him well and his comeback haircut too.

I used to love watching scrap iron Ryan. Zero chin but could punch. He had both arms broken too and was always getting into scrapes. Apparently some punter in his taxi started taking the piss and he stopped the car and banged him out.

Najib Daho - if he would have been around the same time as Michael Gomez then that would have been a Manchester superfight and well worth the price of admission - who would have won that one?

Dave Garside was in a few cracking scraps, check out his fight with Al Malcolm on youtube if you haven't.

Welsh hardcase Andrew Gerrard, he fought them all at heavyweight - that stands out as a real hardcase when you're a heavyweight journeyman.

Darren Dyer, watched him from the Commonwealth Games to his pro career, thought he would go all the way but he didn't but it was nice to see him from the beginning.

Mathew Ellis, had some really nice skills, fast hands but not quite big enough to do it at heavyweight - he had a shot at Danny Williams for the British title but it got cancelled, a pity.

Kostas Petrou - just like the great Rocky Kelly - never in a dull fight!

Don't mean to go down the "is he British" route - but as it is domestic and I think I saw most of his pro fights on domestic TV - I loved watching Damean Kelly box. Might not be everyone's cup of tea watching a light punching flyweight, but he had some skills and probably would have been a world champion in most era's - just he was in a particularly good one.

Lerrone Richards. John Murray was a scream, John Thaxton too

I really enjoyed watching Eesham Pickering during what was a brief peak when he held the European title. I often think what could have been had he managed to stick Hunter down once or twice more and maybe stopped him early. Maybe his awkward style would have given the World champ he’d have eventually fought a tough time but then maybe his decline had already started by then.

Ingle fighters often have very steep declines I’ve always thought.

I used to work with JonJo Irwin's dad so got to see a lot of his early fights and most of his title fights. His lad came into work after the Commonwealth gold win and the medal had some heft to it. He also got to keep his Lonsdale belt. I met him a while back at some show and he actually remembered me, which was a surprise. Nice lad, just couldn't crack an egg with his punches and had some bad breaks in the pro ranks. Also won the 91 ABAs, same year Calzaghe won at welter and Culshaw, Ingle and Denton won.

Irwin is a proper 90s reminder for me. Surprised me when he beat Esham Pickering

Smith knocked Ryan out cold in the ams, he was flat out for about 5 mins

Kid milo. I watched the old fights on nuts TV and he came in correct. Was in great shape and gave it a go.

I saw Kid Milo v Eubank in Brighton just a couple of months before Chris beat Benn.

He brought two or three coach loads of fans down with him, which wasn't bad considering it was on a Wednesday night.
