I still remember the look on my ex's face when we got in the arena and it was empty. I had completely disregarded that it was being shown in the US and they wouldn't be in the ring until 2am! I enjoyed the whole card at least. I tried to convince her how lucky she was to see Chad Dawson - it was lost on her.

McClellan was not on a par with Robinson, Sugar Ray was one of those rarities, a fighter who in his own lifetime was pretty much universally regarded as the greatest fighter of his era - it's easy to forget because of people like Ali, who came afterward, just how huge a star Robinson really was and his level of achievement.

Nothing worse than brave cornermen,they could have got him killed that night

My vote goes to Turpin vs Robinson.

Turpin and Honeyghan, both very similar wins as massive underdogs.
Obviously Curry was still relatively unknown outside of America and general boxing fandom. Sugar Ray was the greatest p4p of all times.
Turpin won at home. Honey won away. So there`s little to choose between these two. Certainly no one had a clue they would win.
Laing`s win was huge but Duran was in a slump and it wasn't for a world title.

Watch this fight a lot. Lloyd was great there.

I’m not sure too many are on par with Robinson though. There is an argument that Robinson looked past Turpin and paid the price. He got serious and slaughtered him in the rematch.
But still, full props to Turpin, he won against the odds.
McLellan was a brutal beast who came to kill and Benn withstood the lot and did what he did.

sure he blasted out reid, but lacy also looked mediocre in multiple fights before that. close fights with sheika, wiggins, and vanderpool. certainly no mug or anything - he was defo explosive, took a good shot, and i think the jc fight prob did make him regress to some extent - but always limited and defo overhyped (the fact that he's mentioned in threads like this shows it). i never drank the kool aid on him

Alan Minter going to America and taking the undisputed title from Vito Antuofurmo was a good win. Underrated nowadays, I'd say.

I had completely forgotten that; just went back and watched it for the first time in years and years. Reid got stiffed there.
Reid was a very good fighter and had some bad luck: totally robbed against Otke, the Calzaghe fight could have gone either way, and hurt by illegal punches against Lacy.

I'm going to mention journeyman Michael Murray who beat Markus Bott on his home turf, stopped him in the 7th. Bott then went on to win the wbo cruiserweight title title beating Brazier. Not necessarily the greatest win by a British boxers but going abroad for a payday and beating a decent boxer was a good achievement.
