Very likeable guy and a great career. One of those fellas that was too good for British level but didnt quite cut the mustard at world level.

Vicious bugger in the ring, good puncher to head and body. Peaked 2018-2020 whilst under the instructions of Dominic Ingle at Wincobank. Liam and Willy Hutchinson used to share a house and some of the stories were comical.

Very good fighter.

With the right opponent and timing would have picked up a world title. His patch when he'd just moved up to middle weight was ruthless.

After his loss to Smith he seemed to lose promoter backing despite being a big ticket seller

I remember this, I seem to recall he missed Wales a lot and living in Sheff did his head in.

Great career and always very entertaining to watch with his power and style. Very close to the big prize - a much better fighter than plenty of beltholders. All the best for retirement.

but ya last few fights he didnt look right. down multiple times from jabs alone

He said he questioned himself over it and maybe they should’ve done more, to be fair he called them rumours but the rumours appeared to be common knowledge in boxing circles

Williams wants to fight again despite concussions

Welsh boxer Liam Williams says he is ready to get back into the ring and fight again - 12 months after retiring due to receiving "several concussions".

The 33-year-old, who won British, European and Commonwealth titles, said in October last year he was hanging up his gloves because he was worried about taking further blows to the head and suffering more brain damage.

However, in a post on his Instagram channel, Williams says he wants to reverse the decision to quit, saying "the time has come and I'm ready to rumble again".

The former world title challenger went on: "Any middleweight or super middleweights looking for some smoke, then here's where you can get it. You know what to do."

Last year Williams said he fought Chris Eubank Jr in 2022 despite knowing he was suffering the effects of a concussion and against medical advice as he "didn't want to let down his fans".

Williams last fight was a first-round KO defeat by Hamzah Sheeraz in February 2024 but he said he realised afterwards he "had taken too much" and did not want to "just fight for money" or "jeopardise his future with his family".

He said he worried about chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain condition linked to repeated blows to the head and concussion. The condition, which gradually gets worse over time and leads to dementia, can only be diagnosed post-mortem.

A decorated Welsh amateur boxer, Williams turned professional after his hopes of boxing in the 2012 Olympics were ruined when he was hit by a car while changing a tyre.

Despite early promise in his professional career he was unsuccessful in his attempts to land a world title losing to WBO world middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade in 2021.

He has to stop. Getting demolished by Sheeraz jabs was just too much. His chin has completely gone.

This doesn’t sound like a good idea.

Urgh not again

I can understand - kind of - not wanting his career to end the way it did, but I can't really see anything positive coming from a return to the ring for Williams. I think it's a tragedy waiting to happen.

I might be getting ahead of myself, but sounds like another prime candidate for BKC.

So many of these guys that just can't handle not feeling the buzz anymore and everything that goes with it.

You know it's bad when the likes of Frankie Gavin and Paulie Mallinaggi are getting involved.

Paulie had a BJFC fight couple years back

But I did think this. BK are gonna open doors for former boxers..

these concussed former pros should try taking up grappling or something instead, or some other sport or hobby where they can motivate themselves and train and compete

I remember reading in Boxing News a very long time ago someone wrote in appealing to ex-boxers to try Fencing.

That's not a bad idea. They could also perhaps try a grappling based combat sport like Jiu-Jitsu or judo to challenge themselves at. It depends what they are chasing really whether it's the challenge, the hunger to be the best, the night under the lights or the pay check. Coaching or commentating doesn't really bring any of those unfortunately.

Do many continue to go to gyms? to keep fit? something to do? light sparring?

Or is it the thrills of being under the lights the adrenaline they miss.

Unless they have some kind of background in the sport, they're not going to be successful in Jiu-Jitsu or judo or similar martial arts, especially at a high level, which may lead them back into boxing. I also believe that students of those martial arts disciplines would have difficulty being successful boxers without experience in it.

Wharton never went near a gym for 15 years after retirement. He didn't even really watch it on telly.
