ya manny steward was good on hbo. he really appreciated the fight from a tactical lens without going into salesman mode over the more popular guy.

hbo boxing of the late 90s/early 2000s was awesome. lampley, merchant, and steward wouldnt just run with each other and could all see things different ways. merchant in particular wasnt afraid to call out bs and enjoyed stirring things up a bit.

whereas feels like lately on brodcasts its all some concerted circle jerk

Sky plummeted when Smith got involved, the Irish guy from the BBC was awful, then in recent times things have been poor.
I guess there is no standard or competition to live up to

Did a football world cup as a side gig doing commentary for American TV, they liked him and signed him up for their premier league coverage. Made more money doing that than boxing.

He had a podcast talking about old boxing stuff on Spotify a while ago, think it's still there but no long does it.

yeh, he did do that.

He used to come on comms for the last couple of fights.

Jim Neilly. Not great, but he was annoyed as the rest of us when he commentated on Ottke - Reid, referring to the referee as a moustacheod buffoon.

I used to like Jim Watt, bit like everything, people get bored with the same voice.

He certainly had opinions, one of my faves was when he was commentating on the Haye-Harrison ppv, and after the fight said if you thought anything different was going to happen, then that's your own fault.... he had a point

That was me , believe it or not. Thank you for remembering. Nice guy but he drove me mad during the later Sky days with his ‘ narratives. ‘ Yes, coming on late as if to say ‘ Smith’s on now, things are getting important ‘ was a rampant ego particularly as he was head of boxing so it was basically his idea. You can understand Buffer announcing just the main event. He’s old, he is a boxing icon and he’s associated with huge boxing matches, but Adam Smith……incredible really. They’ll be comparing Natasha Jonas to Sugar Ray Leonard soon, oh, yeah, i forgot, theyre doing that already.

I bumped into Steve the other day at an unlicensed show. He was on top form, and did a great job at reffing the bouts

I seem to remember Teddy Atlas escribing bodywork as flooding the basement if my memory serves me correctly as you often get the ESPN stuff on late night Channel 5 along with NASCAR highlights too
