Ben Whittaker and Liam Cameron sign deal for highly-anticipated rematch after first fight ended in controversy

Ben Whittaker and Liam Cameron have signed to face each other in a much-anticipated rematch, talkSPORT understands.

A member of Cameron's team told talkSPORT.com on Thursday that the fight is a 'done deal' for April 19.

The source did not confirm the proposed location, although there are rumours on social media that the organisers are targeting Birmingham.

This was neither confirmed nor denied to talkSPORT.com.

The latest development comes after Cameron took to social media to declare that Whittaker's promoter Ben Shalom had rejected a 'very good offer' from his promotional outfit, Queensberry.

"Hi, @BenGWhittaker [Ben Whittaker], [are] we doing this rematch or what?" tweeted Cameron last month.

"My promoter @Queensberry has made you a very very good offer for this fight.

"Your promoter @benjshalom [Ben Shalom] has knocked it back immediately saying he wants it on [a] BOXXER show so tell him to get his wallet out and let’s dance."

Cameron and Whittaker's inaugural encounter ended in controversy when they locked horns on the Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol undercard on October 12 in Saudi Arabia.

In the dying embers of the fifth round, both men flipped over the top rope, resulting in Whittaker sustaining injuries that left him unable to continue.

Cameron had been on the ascendancy when the fight was waved off.

However, as more than four rounds had been completed, the bout went to a technical decision with the judges declaring it a split draw.

Cameron claims Whittaker was exhausted by the fifth round and 'looked for a way out of their fight'.

The Sheffield boxer has been hounding him for a rematch ever since.

Speaking to talkSPORT in October, he said: "He 100 per cent quit. Of course, he did.

"From the second round, he was breathing so heavy. He spat his gum shield out, he was holding me constantly, he was low-blowing me.

"And he basically dragged me onto the ropes. You can see him flip his head back.

"He was exhausted, I was quite surprised how easy it was.

"Ben Whittaker is in a really bad position because he has to fight me again. And he can't beat me. There's no way of that.

"He cannot beat me. There's no way on this planet Earth he can ever beat me.

"Ben needs the rematch. I can go all different paths, obviously, with allegedly backing me.

"He needs that rematch. There's no way out of it. The fans are going to demand it.

"Well, his fans and stuff and the internet, you know what it's like, it can be an horrible place. All his followers have turned and given me the love and support."

Shalom has dropped the ball here and caved.

If Whittaker loses, that's a big investment down the drain.

A more experienced man would have brought their man back against a couple of weak, international opponents for trinkets while waiting for Cameron to get ring rusty or lose.

Then offer Cameron a short notice job.

It's a risk for sure. The only way Whittaker gets his star power back is if he wins very convincingly, had he not taken the fight he would have been lambasted. All the pressure is on him, and he best prepare properly.

Don't see how Whittaker can win this unless he runs all night and sneaks a points win.

He doesn't have enough pop to dent Cameron or the gas tank to tough it out in close.

I see where you’re coming from but I think it was the only fight to make for Whittaker.

This isn’t fringe world title level, it’s around commonwealth title level. It would be a real bad look to drop down a couple of rungs to then face Cameron at some point down the line.

Frank is super smart and I bet/hope he’s got Cameron an excellent payday.

FW has done a great job, bullied Shalom into taking an unnecessary risky fight.

I'm sure Cameron is getting paid well too.

And FW will be relishing stitching Shalom up.

Unless he bangs out Cameron where does Whittaker go from here ? He needed to tone down the silliness from the start instead of making himself a target

For me it was the only fight to make for Whittaker and I’m sure he’d want the chance to try and show he didn’t quit and that he can beat Cameron.

if he cant beat cameron in 2 tries he's not going anywhere anyway, at least compared to how much has been sunk into him

I can’t see how Shalom’s been bullied. Ultimately it’ll be conversations with Whittaker & his trainer. The fight is happening because rightly or wrongly they believe he can do a lot better in a rematch.

If they wanted more preparation for a rematch they’d get it. He’s already shown with Clarke, Azim & Caroline Dubois that he won’t rush his ‘stars’ unless he feels they’re ready.

FW has created a situation where Whittaker looks bad by not taking it

If it was FWs fighter, especially if a big wedge of money was invested, he wouldn't be put in a sink or swim situation.

This was a fight Whittaker easily could have swerved with different publicity and promotion.

Great news this is happening. Think it might backfire on Whittaker but I was fully expecting him to swerve it so have to give credit for taking the rematch

Easter Sunday again.

Nice to see the promoter, not in between the fighters

Boxxer turning some disastrous matchmaking into a main event - should be way down the card really: Overhyped prospect blows it against a journeyman and they’re billing it as the rematch of the century.

And shalom had to take this fight, because of the way that the brash flash braggart Whittaker quit, he would’ve looked ridiculous if he’d taken the soft option and opted out. Again.

He won’t be nearly as confident this time round. There’s a good chance he’ll get beaten again i’d say.
