According to Sean Gibbons, he died before the surgery.

Gibbons told World Boxing News, “They were supposed to be doing that surgery on his esophagus, but he flatlined and died right before they even started the surgery.

“I don’t know if the stuff they put him to sleep with did it, but his lungs collapsed also because they were full of food due to the tear in his esophagus. He was gone for sixteen minutes. So, sixteen minutes without oxygen to the brain, he didn’t really have a chance. He had been on life support and braindead since Monday,” added the MP Promotions President.

hmmm, not a medical professional but sounds kinda strange, i wonder if this coulda been handled better or if it really was just an untreatable situation

Rest in Paradise, young man. My favourite Jones moment was when he KO’d Tyrone Brunson. Brunson had broken the record for the most 1st round knockouts in a row, before he faced a proper professional boxer in Jones.

He was likely very malnourished and weak. The surgery would have been tough on his body.
