the only close fight in recent years in the Uk i remember going to the away man is Brodie v Jorrin.

Add to this , Woods v Johnson 1, Cook v Zoff, Lynes v Sarmiento, Dunne v Jacobs...etc etc

thanks, knockout, i just thought I´m the only one who has a realistic point of view in the old judging theme.

So has Britain to be fair. I thought Brodie v Chi 1 was pretty clear cut for Chi.

Look at Colin Lynes last time out, and his "title winning" effort against Sarmiento. Both pretty farcical.

That's a good point. I think it may go the distance, but I don't see Veit winning.

Bollox. Joe Calzaghe has fought 3 times since December 2002. If Calzaghe had actually fought the fights that he was scheduled for, then I would agree that financially Joe Calzaghe was good for the WBO.

However, under the Universum promotional banner the German fighters, fight regularly and in front of sell out crowds. I can assure you the WBO will make more money from a young, hungry German than an injury-prone Calzaghe.

absolutely right. Calzaghe now gets the biggest purse of his career by Mr.Kohl not by Mr.Allegedly. The TV stations over here put much more money in it.

Beyer against Calzaghe would be closer.

Yes you make a good point. However, Calzaghe is probably more likely to retain the title than Veit.

Totally agree. However I dont see the retaining of the title being an issue of interest for the WBO - just as long as people are contesting it on a regular basis.

Calzaghe, since winning the title has defended on average 2 times per year. He has effectively taken the WBO's money making tool (the title) and froze it up.

If you look at the likes of Veit and Ottke their records show that they've fought, four fights per year, year after year - without fail. Its this sought of activity that interests the WBO and not the ability of the Champion to semi-retire with the title in his possession, per Joe Calzaghe.

Both can beat Calzaghe, both can be beaten by Calzaghe. i would say 50/50 to all these fights. The difference is that Calzaghes way is down the hill, the two other guys go up regarding the last year. I can remember that before the Beyer-Green-fight most of you guys said that the winner will be #1 at super middle, even big James Mc........

I would Beyer give a little advantage vs Calzaghe because of the Green-fight and the confidence he won.

I was going to make exactly the same point as Liam. Veit on "well organised" big German shows fighting against hand picked #1 contenders 4-5 times a year will surely show the WBOgus more money than Sicknote with his bad back, bad marriage, bad attitude etc

Yes, this is why Ottke was 'assisted' in retaining his titles for so long. However, Veit is not Ottke, and on any given night he could lose and the title go abroad. Mind you, I'm sure that the WBO can cook the books to make sure that the fighters from favourable camps occupy the #1 spot.

Ottke had the WBA and IBF titles. so you are saying that Sauerland was corrupting the IBF and WBA that Ottke could be champion? And if german based fighters have other titles then they are paid, too. aha.

one qustion, James: Why then does Sauerland/Kohl then only have a hand full of champions? If they had such an influence on all sanctioning bodies the woould have al the titles from Heavy to welter.........

Although ive mentioned Universum and fighters such as Ottke and Veit, I dont think there is a conspiracy on the WBO's behalf to keep the title in Germany.

I merely think the WBO has an interest in busy 'world' class fighters, and that also includes non-germans such as Mundine, Kessler, Lacy & whoever - except Joe Calzaghe.

Bubi, if you cannot accept that promoters have influence over sanctioning bodies then I think you need to take a reality check.

Promoters run boxing, NOT sanctioning bodies, the bodies are there as facilitators and take their slice of the cake in return for aiding promoters get their fighters in the rankings. It's well known that the sanctioning bodies are far from incorruptible and often bow to pressure to promoters over selection of 'favourable' officials, referees and judges. This is not news, it's been going on for years.

The more influential the promoter, and the more successul, the more likely they would be able to sway the sanctioning bodies to rank their fighters and play ball.

The man who has the most sway at heavyweight is Don King, which is why it's hard for anyone to break his stranglehold. He has had at least one heavyweight champ almost unbroken but for a brief period when
Holyfield lost to Lewis since Ali v Foreman. He's the man.

Nobody is saying Sauerland is the only man with influence, but now that German boxing has become so big, with so much money floating around, the top German promoters are becoming major players and as such more and more of their fighters are going to get title opportunities and favourable conditions when defending their titles. It's the way the game is played.

I have little doubt in my mind that the IBF played ball with Sauerland, if you believe otherwise, you're in denial.

Then stop saying that Germany is the land of the robberies. I can´t hear it anymore. It´s totally wrong and unfair.

If you are right the whole sport is one corruption. i wouldn´t go that far. i think most judges do their job well and are not influenced by any promoter.

I didn't. I am saying that certain promoters are able to get favourable decisions for their fighters due to their influence over the sanctioning bodies. Not in every single case, and not every promoter. However the sanctioning bodies are the source of the corruption, they are tacit accomplices in keeping the sport serving the interests of those in control of the money.

As I said, I'm not saying every decision is corrupt, far from it, but all too often in high profile fights, decisions occur in which the media and fans all cry foul, and it really hurts the sport. It's nothing new, it's been going on since the earliest days of prize fighting.

I think that they are just a bit better at getting away with it in Germany....
anyway, you know that I just hate that some guys say that Germany is famous for the "roobberies". and, sorry James, but you are one of the guys who bring in "robberies" when it comes to Ottke or Germany in general.

I am no Ottke fan. His style bored me aswell. But his success wasn´t made by "robberies" or Corruption. If he would be British you would also regard him more as a sportsman and that he has just earned it. he is no asshole like many other boxers who want media attraction and money.

Another point: If Germany would be so powerfull then everything would have been done for a win in the DM-Gonzalez-fight. I could also say: "The american boxing or betting mafia has done everything to prevent DM to beat an american record..........".

It´s always going to the same direction when it comes to a world title fight in Germany BEFORE the fight happens. "You must win by KO or you will lose.....blablabla...." THe same before the Beyer-Green-fight. After the fight there was rather silence though it was a pro-Green-verdict. Many people (not only germans) had a clear win for Beyer........

I will drive to Braunschweig and watch the fight and will stop posting for a while. I can´t bear this anti-german-shit anymore. I hope Calzaghe will win on points with a "controversial decision"............ :TU:

this is true the germans are no worse than anywhwere else these days.
look at barnes vincent and harrison polo, and any of colin lynes fights whom i hope not through dislike for the guy, but general injustice gets his arse spanked.

stop the anti german theme its not necessary and now defunct nor any more factual than anywhere else in the world. if say hopkins eastman had turned out like Sturm de la hoya we all on this board would have been in uproar.

lets keep perspective.
