JoJo Diaz Represents Stiffer Test Than Abdullah Mason, Says Floyd Schofield Sr.
After Floyd Schofield Jr. (19-0, 13 KOs) got rid of Tevin Farmer via first-round stoppage, many believed his next fight would be an even bigger step up.
Now that he’s taking on JoJo Diaz, however, some consider it a step down.
Regardless, the two meet November 8 in the co-main event with Vergil Ortiz vs. Erickson Lubin at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
Prior to finalizing their deal, Team Schofield floated that the next opponent could've been Abdullah Mason. But while the 21-year-old is incredibly talented, trainer Floyd Schofield Sr. believes his son is facing a more dangerous fighter.
“JoJo Diaz is a harder task than Mason,” he told MillCity Boxing on its YouTube channel.
Although Mason (19-0, 17 KOs) would’ve loved to fight him, he isn’t complaining. The highly ranked lightweight will fight for his first world title against Sam Noakes on November 22 at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Potential is one thing, but realizing it is something else entirely. Mason, according to Schofield Sr., is still finding himself, despite fighting for the vacant WBO strap. Diaz, on the other hand, is a fully developed pro, albeit one who's seen better days.
In his last nine fights, Diaz (34-8-1, 15 KOs) has picked up just two victories. If that wasn't bad enough, he’s also coming off another defeat August 2 against Regis Prograis.
Schofield Sr., nevertheless, doesn’t want you to pay attention to the fighter Diaz is now. The accolades he’s racked up are enough to view him as more of a threat to his son than Mason.
“I love Mason, but he hasn’t won two titles or been in the Olympics,” he said. “They wouldn’t put him in the ring with no JoJo. They developing Mason.”

Jaron Ennis Sees Vergil Ortiz-Erickson Lubin As 50-50 Fight
Jaron Ennis hopes he and rival Vergil Ortiz can, after years of talk, test each other early in 2026.
The former Ring/IBF/WBA welterweight champion isn’t convinced, however, that Ortiz (23-0, 21 KOs) will win his next fight to ensure they can finalize a deal for one of the most intriguing matchups in boxing. Erickson Lubin is, without a doubt, a much more formidable foe for Ortiz than Uisma Lima was for Ennis on Saturday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.
Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs) needed less than one round to obliterate Lima, but he wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Lubin beats Ortiz in a 12-round main event DAZN will stream November 8 from Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
“It’s a great fight, and I think it’s a 50-50 fight,” Ennis said during his post-fight press conference. “You can’t really sleep on Lubin. Lubin a crafty southpaw. He sharp, he can punch as well, it’s gonna be a great fight. And Vergil will bring the pressure and got a good jab, throw a lotta punches. It’s a great fight for boxing and I think it’s a 50-50 fight.”
Lubin (27-2, 19 KOs) has lost only to WBC super welterweight champ Sebastian Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs) and former undisputed 154-pound champ Jermell Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs). The southpaw from Orlando, Florida, defeated Jesus Ramos (23-1, 19 KOs) and Ardreal Holmes (17-1, 6 KOs) in his past two fights and was the IBF’s mandatory challenger for Russian champion Bakhram Murtazaliev (23-0, 17 KOs) before he accepted a showdown with Ortiz for more money.
Lubin, 30, is 3-0 since his brutal battle with Fundora in April 2022.
Both boxers went down during that “Fight of the Year” candidate in Las Vegas. Lubin led by one point on two scorecards, 85-84 apiece, when his former trainer, Kevin Cunningham, stopped their bout before the 10th round due to severe swelling on face.
Ortiz, 27, a knockout artist from Grand Prairie, Texas, has beaten two top junior middleweights in his most recent fights. His points victories over Uzbekistan’s Israil Madrimov (10-2-1, 7 KOs) and Ukraine’s Serhii Bohachuk (26-3, 24 KOs) helped him earn the No. 1 spot in The Ring’s top 10 in the 154-pound division.
Madrimov is ranked third by The Ring and Bohachuk, who recorded two flash knockdowns on his way to losing a majority decision, is rated 10th. Fundora, Murtazaliev and Lubin are ranked second, fourth and fifth.
Angola’s Lima (14-2, 10 KOs) was not among The Ring’s top 10 entering a blowout in which Ennis sent him to the canvas twice before their scheduled 12-round bout was stopped just 1:58 into it. Ennis won the WBA interim super welterweight title by annihilating Lima, but he remains motivated to become boxing’s fully unified junior middleweight champion.
“We’ll take the [Ortiz-Lubin] winner or the belts,” Ennis said. “I’m trying to be undisputed, collect these belts and shut y’all up, because y’all talk too much.”

FLOYD SCHOFIELD SUFFERS WRIST INJURY, WITHDRAWS FROM FIGHT WITH ‘JO JO’ DIAZ
Floyd Schofield Jr. is out of a fight for the second time this year.
Golden Boy Promotions announced Sunday night that the undefeated lightweight contender suffered a wrist injury while training Thursday and was advised to withdraw from his fight against Joseph Diaz Jr. on November 8. Schofield (19-0, 13 KOs), The Ring’s No. 6-ranked lightweight, and Diaz (34-8-1, 15 KOs) were scheduled to square off in a 10-round co-feature DAZN was to stream before WBC interim super welterweight champ Vergil Ortiz Jr. encounters Erickson Lubin in the 12-round main event at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
Golden Boy’s statement read, “On Thursday, Oct. 23, Floyd Schofield Jr. sustained a Grade 2 sprain to his right wrist, which included minor ligament damage. Following medical evaluation and on the advice of his team, Schofield has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled bout against Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz on Saturday, Nov. 8. Golden Boy wishes him a full and speedy recovery.”
Schofield, 23, knocked out former IBF junior lightweight champ Tevin Farmer in the first round of his last fight June 28 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
The talented Austin, Texas native quickly floored Farmer (33-9-1, 8 KOs, 1 NC) twice and Farmer never recovered. Their 10-round fight was stopped just 1:18 into it by referee Gerard White.
Schofield’s impressive victory over Farmer helped him re-establish some momentum after he was hospitalized the week of his ill-fated fight against WBC lightweight champ Shakur Stevenson. The British Boxing Board of Control, which regulated the card, wouldn’t allow Schofield to fight once he was hospitalized so close to a title fight scheduled for February 22 at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Floyd Schofield Sr., who trains his son, caused controversy when he claimed his son was poisoned prior to challenging Stevenson for his WBC belt.
Diaz, 32, is just 2-7 in his past nine fights. The former IBF junior featherweight champ was more competitive than anticipated, however, when he lost a 10-round unanimous decision to ex-WBA/WBC 140-pound champ Regis Prograis on August 2 at Credit Union 1 Arena in Chicago.

It appears as if, if he’s not 100%, his dad won’t let him fight.
Re: Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Erickson Lubin | DAZN - November 8, 2025
Was watching him last week
I like him, beautiful jab and hook he's well schooled
Over eager, a bit but I don't want to stifle his ability it's a close one
He's been clipped big a couple of times
Floyd Schofield 19-0 13 KO's
Let's see what goes down on the 8th against Diaz

It's still a big fight for Vergil Ortiz Jr
Erickson has some respectful boxing skills and has an opportunity
Let's see how it plays out in a fair fight
Letdown from Floyd Schofield in what looked like a great double header
