Boxxer announce DAZN as broadcast partner for Troy Williamson-Callum Simpson rematch

The Troy Williamson-Callum Smith rematch, set for the First Direct Bank Arena in Leeds, England, on August 8 will be shown live and exclusively on DAZN after promoters Boxxer announced a deal with the streaming network.

Boxxer, headed by Ben Shalom, have worked with the BBC since their contract with Sky Sports expired 12 months ago. Boxing Scene understands that Boxxer will continue to work with the BBC but the finer details of their coverage, after announcing on social media "a new multi-fight partnership" with DAZN, will be revealed at a press conference on Wednesday.

Simpson, 18-1 (13 KOs), had been one of Boxxer's hottest commodities until he lost, in an upset, to Williamson in December. With the victory, which came via TKO in the 10th round, Williamson reinvigorated his own career and claimed the European, Commonwealth and British super middleweight titles.

It’s a shame they’re on DAZN. Pretty much the only boxing shows getting any kind of viewing figures will be the ones on Sky. I worry about the sport going forward & the lack of viewers

Any rising talent now will head to Sky

And if for some reason you were going to sign for a dazn promotion, it wouldn't be boxxer, you'd go for MR or QB or TR

So in addition to being a sort of big nothing, this move also serves as a killer of talent pipeline

There is also the possibility that they pull out all the stops and give all the money to 1 or 2 big names.

If you're running a lower tier promotion as you've described -"lower down the pecking order" - nobody is paying you big money for that.

So then you're in a sort of death spiral. Or at least, small hall spiral.

The one thing I know about boxing - having spent more than a decade working in the sport, and forty years following it - is that there is always someone willing to invest in promotional companies if you look hard enough. From Panos Eliades to Turki.

I am not privvy to Boxxer's setup, but I wouldn't be surprised if they find a backer who wants the kudos of being front row and is happy to throw money at it.

But "one specified event and a stated intent to stage a future ppv" does not really equal "genuine multi fight deal"

Nor does anywhere say "long term"

So what they've done is spun up a single-event deal into a multi fight, tied it to the Simpson-Troy rematch presser so it looks like some sort of launch presser for "a DAZN deal"

And all the YouTubers and online fans are just lapping it up unquestioningly

I don't know if I'm taking crazy pills or everyone is seeing something I am not seeing but "one fight deal and maybe a ppv down the line" doesn't strike me as earth shattering

Also nobody questioning why this isn't on BBC when the first fight was

The BBC deal was four fights. A fifth was tacked on to make up for Azim pulling out in October.

Boxxer have continually implied that the deal was not a four fight deal and that it is some sort of long term multi event contract

So why then is the rematch of the BBC fight not going on the BBC? That makes no logical sense, if you've got a rolling agreement.

It does make sense if you don't have a rolling agreement and in fact your four+1 deal is over, and BBC didn't want to buy this one (whether for financial or value or world cup reasons)

But again nobody seems to have thought this through.
