In 1944, Bob Montgomery was stopped in the first by Al (Bummy)Davis.
His next fight he beat Beau Jack for the belt.
It’s definitely terrible getting stopped in the first
round, but I think a lot of fighters are able to come up with reasons it happened to them such as, I was just caught cold, didn’t warm up enough, guy got lucky with that shot before I got into a rhythm, etc.
it’s harder to rationalize a sustained beating round after round where you’re never in it then getting stopped.
Just an opinion.

There's also rumors that Dempsey had Plaster of Paris in his gloves for the Willard fight.

Dempsey was stopped in a round by "Fireman" Jim Flynn and Dempsey would end up putting destructive path to win the World Heavyweight Title from Jess Willard and he avenged his only knockout loss to Flynn by blasting him out in the first round.
