Veit's corner chucked in the towel at the end of the fifth, but the referee let it continue into the 6th, with obvious consequences. Can a referee actually overule a corner retirement? Going by this the answer is yes, but seems rather idioltic.
It does seem strange, but remember the referee is actually closer to the fighters/action than the cornermen. And if a fighter is taking a beating or has been knocked over in a round he also checks over the fighter in the corner, so keeps that in mind for the following round. Plus there have been times where the corner stoppages have been somewhat dodgy - Carlos Monzon's 'knockout' in the Nino Benvenuti rematch springs to mind.
Very true, although you'd think the decision would be up to the boxer and his corner, whether they were right or wrong. And I'm sure Veit wasn't exactly pumped up to come out and win it in the 6th. I suppose the referee would tho have a responsibility to make sure a retirement isn't premature from a shit-scared pussy, and that the fight is beyond doubt. In this case tho, it was by the end of the 5th

I'd actually go a bit further and say that Viet was never in the fight at all. From round 1 on he just looked like he had absolutely no authority both in his boxing and in imposing his huge frame on Calzaghe. The scary this is, he still managed to make Joe look bad (at some points).

Veit's corner didnt throw the towel in during the fifth, it was the sixth. They tried to throw in the towel after the knockdown but the referee refused to accept it which is in the rules I think - Veit wanted to go on I assume. In the follow up flurry the ref jumped in with no real clean shots landing when arguably Veit had recovered. Very odd.

There's something strange with Universum fighters I've noticed. While looking for a blank tape to record Trinidad - Wright on Saturday, I stumbled over my copy of Catley - Beyer. Naturally, I watched the last round. Now, don't get me wrong, the punch was devastating and put Beyer out, but I also noticed something in his face that I regonised in Viet (after getting up in both Calzaghe fights) and also in Wlad just before he got stopped by Sanders, and also in round 5 of his fight with Brewster. To put it simply, they seemed to show a lack of inner ability to comeback when the pressure builds up and reaches a certain point. fornicate, just remembered the first Green - Beyer fight too - same expression on his face.

Beyer is not a Universum fighter, he's with Sauerland.

Substitute 'German star fighters' for Universum then.
