In a British ring he probably would have been stopped. I personally was fine with it going on - for the sole reason this one was for the Championship of the World. Not a title, this was for the real deal. Special rules should come into effect for these rare occasions, in my opinion.
Weeks did an excellent job - I said it earlier but I'll say it again: he read every page of that fight. Chico went down because of fatigue/accumulation. He still had his wits about him (like usual). He ate many left hooks like that first one that put him down earlier in the fight, and they merely momentarily rocked him. The ref knew his head was there; he was in dialogue with Chico and had his eyes locked in Chico's upward gaze. He knew what Chico was doing.
It would be almost impossible for him to get up at 9, or 9 and a half, with his arms in a guard position. Doing that makes you look wobbly at the best of times, not least when you've went through 10 rounds of hell in an inside fight with Jose Luis Castillo. He looked alright walking over to the corner, I thought. Could see he was tired, but he wasn't exactly doing the 'chicken dance'. I've seen far, far worse cases of a fighter's legs gone and it being allowed to go on, and no one mentions it. Shane Moseley - Vernon Forrest 1 springs to mind, though there are a million others.
Also, I don't know the problem with the count; I see no problem with him getting up at 9.99999999 seconds. The rules say it's a ten count - a whole number. Anything under that is legit.
