Best British prospect right now?

I wouldn't say 'best British prospect', but that was probably the best I've saw Gary Young tonight. I knew beforehand Ivor Bonavic was no mug, so was keen to see what shape Gary was in (given I seem to remember him being a little out of shape recently). He looked fit, but most importantly - that was a punch perfect performance...

That's good to hear. Not been a brilliant year for him, with injuries, that causing him to be on and off bills, and, as you say, he didn't look to clever in his last fight fitness-wise.

Were you at the fight Manos? What happened to McIntyre? As in, I know he lost to Wright, but TKO 1

it took him 8 rounds to win not the best british prospect

Yeah, that was a weird one. Nigel Wright looked really up for it - brought a big support too. McIntyre was a bit too upright from the get-go. It was a little scrappy at first, with Wright almost getting on top but not quite putting enough authority into his work. It's something I've seen with him quite a lot.

Anyway, when both guys are quite upright the obligatory first round 'chin check' usually tells a lot. In this case it told a helluva lot - McIntyre was really out of it. It was quite a weird reaction, to be honest. I mean, anyone can get knocked out if they get hit on the chin at the right time, but he really had a nasty reaction to a knockout where his head didn't bounce off the ground... his eyes were completely glazed after Mickey Vann had stopped it and was holding him up. It was quite unsettling. I dont know whether it was carry-on from his first knockout loss in 2001 (which Ive heard was a nasty one) or if he was ill, or had trouble with weight before this fight or something. Not trying to make excuses - I rate Nigel Wright - but I was quite close to him and looked into his eyes and something just didnt look right there...

Of the ones I've seen here in the U.S. -- Stephen Foster Jr. and Thomas McDonagh looked the most promising.

Yes, but I wouldn't class a British champion as a Prospect - more like "on his way there".

My definition of a prospect is the likes of Mitchell, Haye, Jennings, Doherty, Conception etc.

The best prospect in the Uk in my opinion is Tony Doherty, although Ben Dunne is worthy of a mentioned. Forget Dunne as a puncher, he reminds me of Damean Kelly.

Some others worthy of a mention include Foster Jnr, Minter, and Mitchell.

I am impressed with these four especially.

What do you class as a prospect?

Someone who hasn't won a British title yet?

If so, then I'd go for someone like Gary Woolcombe or Lee Meager. If you mean to go on to better things, I think Andy Morris could be a real threat he has been moving up the ratings unnoticed and now has the British title after a comprehensive performance against Simpson last night

Haye could be exceelent on the world stage, he may not win all the time, but he's a great TV fighter.

Its early days but I'd say that far and away the best prospects are George Hillyard and Anthony Small. I would say they are streets ahead of the rest.

I also like Geard Adjetovic, but he looks a bit stale lately. Maybe all those amatuer fights have caught up with him.

Kevin Mitchell has some promise too.

I also liked Scotland's Gary Young, I'd like to see Gary moved up to a harder level and see how he goes. I seen him fight early on in Belfast and again in Glasgow.

Any more thoughts on Gary?

Kevin Mitchell is the pick for me. He shows a good mixture of hand speed , agility and decent ( if not devesatating) power.

Woolcombe, Foster Jnr , Haye , Khan , Smedley and Grant.

The ones I mentioned haven't gone on to much - so I now think the best prospect in this country is without doubt Amir Khan.

i think you would have to give khan at least a year before you can rate him and at the moment you would have to rate mitchel above him
as for scotland its between gary young and ricky burns as the best prosbects to win at least british title

Anthony Small is certainly an interesting prospect, his style is unorthodox to say the least, he is like Hamed on speed when backtracking away from punches. And he has a motormouth too but obvious talent and maybe he can go far.
