Alright ladies im back again. Just need to resurrect this old thread of mine. Can one of you guys post me some kind of link or let me know a good place to buy these standalone recorders like the panasonic or sony?

Do they come with the cables that plug into ya PC?

If you know how to connevt 2 VCR's together via cables you have enough knowledge to do it.

Panasonic give great visual results in my opinion.

Thanks guys but before mocking me i should point out i walked into Dixons in Leeds yesterday asking for one and the guy didnt have a fornicating clue what i was talking about, and neither did his acne infested & paed-moustacheod supervisor either.

Cant seem to find one on amazon either. Is all of this some huge boxrec ruse to make the Overhanded One look stupid?

I am looking to get one of these myself in the early part of next year to archive all my old vhs tapes to dvd.

I did a quick google search and the one I came up with was Panasonic DMREH 50 - available at digital empire for around £232

I would ask someone with experince of these machines for a model number before ordering, but that should give u a starting point.

The Sony RDR GX210 is excellent, around £280 - hook up a VCR via a scart and you can record VHS to DVD

Pioneer models are good i am told but very expensive, i want something that will allow me to tape 4 hour tapes over on there own and then edit stuff out afterwards. I am lazy

You can edit on on the standalone DVD recorder provided it has a hard drive (and most of them do now apart from the very cheapest models) OR you can transfer to the PC and edit there. I do the latter as I find it easier than fecking around with the remote.

Nine out of ten times thats just asking for trouble. Your better of finding an independant Audio/visual shop in your area and talking to someone who knows what they are talking about..

Also like others have said if you can afford it pay the extra and get one with a hard drive.

One thing to remember about the 2 in 1 units is that if either the VCR or the DVD component fails and the unit has to go back under warranty you have NOTHING left to record with while it is being repaired. For that reason alone, I personally stear clear of them.

The thread that wont die... is there a site online where you can buy the mentioned dvd recorders as the ones in most places are run of the mill dvd recorders nothing else. i cant find the stuff you boys are referring to anywhere.

on one seems to have a fooking clue!!!!

Depends on your setup - some computer programmes do it and that is probably the easiest way. What I do is press play on a DVD player (and in the TV system you want the conversion) - if you want an NTSC disc in PAL, just put the NTSC disc in the player, have it set to PAL and press play. Then scart it up to a DVD recorder and press record.

Most TV and Video systems in the UK play NTSC well, though if you are trading with a US trader you will probably have to convert a PAL disc into NTSC.

Richer sounds have a good range at very reasonable prices...they are fantastic for AV equipment generally, got a set of Eltax floor standing surround speakers for a total of 50 quid, RRP on one speaker alone was 199.

if you do it on the PC's DVD drive, and burn with Nero, recording/copying should be free of regional coding. if not, download dvdregionfree or dvd+cssregionfree, whatever it's called, which will work with your burning program. there are free trial versions on the net, do a google search and you'll have one in no time

there's a way of upgrading your tapes to dvd on the pc, i forget how but apparently there's a way of doing it without the dvd 'showing' up/ emphasising the shortcomings of the tape as much.

Yes, providing you have a DVD player that can view both settings and you can interchange between the two - some can view both but only automatic, so will always play NTSC in NTSC and Pal in Pal.

The cheap Proline DVD from Comets (30 quid) has all the requirements (can play an NTSC disc in pal mode etc).

If your talking about an NTSC video - then it will depend on the machine, some DVD you can interchange your record setting (Pal or NTSC) but if not it will take you one disc and a bit longer to do - just create the NTSC disc, then do as described.

Picture quality will not be as the original disc, but still much much much better than a converted VHS.

I'd say not. However, the other poster seems adamant that it can be done. Maybe you could trade a DVD with him and see if it truly is able to be played back with no problems.

My understanding is that the DVD player (or recorder) can output either a pure PAL signal, a pure NTSC signal or a pseudo-PAL signal (under the banner of "NTSC playback on a PAL TV").

I don't believe the pseudo-PAL signal can be recorded as it is neither PAL nor NTSC.

Things change and maybe the latest models do have a built in standards convertor. It would be nice if they did.

if you use a pc, and those programs i mentioned, you won't notice the difference. a pc's dvd drive is the cleanest way to copy/upgrade/compile as you don't lose a generation. and with region free programs that work with your burning program you can't go wrong

All I can say for 100% certain is that I have a friend in the states and we sometimes swap DVD - it doesn't play on his machine if I give him a disc in pure PAL, however, if I do this - put the PAL disc in the DVD player and set it to NTSC and then record - it works perfectly.
